What will you make of it? What will you make of it? Presentation Transcript

  • Let’s face it.
  • Classes aren’t going to teach you all you need to know to be a competent and capable professional.
  • There aren’t any classes on teamwork, networking, or collaboration in Foellinger Auditorium.
    • Instead, you need to refine these skills through working with others.
    • To find them, you need to get out of your comfort zone.
    • You might find people that value the same things you do.
    • … and learn how to work with those who don’t.
    • You might learn you really can’t judge a book by its cover.
    • But how do you start learning things that can’t be taught in lecture?
    • At a school of 40,000 undergraduate students, you have to be your own advocate.
    • You need to utilize all the people here to help you.
    • Your academic advisor could be more than just for help for picking out classes, but a mentor for life.
    • Your professors have insights from their own career struggles and triumphs.
    • Your teaching assistants are more than happy to share their advice –are you willing to ask?
    • From Alterative Spring Break to the Yoga and Meditation Club, there are over 800 RSO’s you could get involved in.
    • Quad Day overwhelming? Find all the information you need by searching RSO list in the Illinois search bar.
    • People and activities are out there to help and support you – but are you willing to reach out and find them?
    • At Illinois be more than a student.
    • Be a traveler…
    • … or an intramural champion…
    • … or a musician…
    • … or a big brother or sister – Greek or otherwise.
    • Your experience at Illinois is up to you.
What will you make of it?
    • Music cited: “Beautiful Day” (as made famous by U2) performed by the band Rock Heroes on their album entitled Top Rock Instumentals
