Open Source.

Linux: A lot of interoperability work has also been done to make sure Windows works with Linux.Samba: MS joint testing and engineering with the Samba Team, Samba; announced that they’re satisfied with the agreement, and are taking a Work Group Server Protocol Program (WSPP) trade secret and copyright license.  This will give them access to Microsoft specifications for the protocols in WSPP (such as file, print, and user and group administrative services) and allow the Samba Team to create, use, and distribute implementations; will significantly improve the process of Samba development, and produce better quality interoperation between Windows and Linux/UNIX environments.http://port25.technet.com/archive/2007/12/19/If-you_2700_re-surprised_2C00_-you_2700_re-not-paying-attention.aspx Mozilla: Vista compatibility testing, Windows media player plug in. http://port25.technet.com/archive/2006/09/20/Why-I-invited-Mozilla.aspx Apache: OSS lab engagement to improve Apache on Windowshttp://port25.technet.com/archive/2008/02/26/the-apache-visit-to-microsoft-campus-day-one.aspx MySQL: Visual Studio Industry Partner for .NET development with MySQL – 40% + of MySQL downloads are for Windowshttp://www.mysql.com/windows/ PHP: Microsoft is working with Zend the PHP company and the PHP .NET community to make Windows and IIS great platforms for PHP applications; partners like Spikesource are certifying open source PHP applications on Windowshttp://port25.technet.com/archive/2006/10/31/Zend-_2600_-Microsoft.aspx Ruby: IronRuby, being built from the ground up as an open source project, MS-PLhttp://www.iunknown.com/2007/07/a-first-look-at.html Python: IronPython, available under MS-PL, being built as an open source projecthttp://port25.technet.com/archive/2007/04/30/python-java-ruby-oh-my-cross-platform-net-framework.aspx Java: JBoss established an interoperability partnership with Microsoft including focus on the manageability of JBoss Enterprise Middleware System (JEMS) environments using Microsoft Operations Manager Operations Manager (MOM). The Interop Vendor Alliance is a community of software and hardware vendors working together to enhance interoperability with Microsoft systems on behalf of our mutual customers. http://interopvendoralliance.com/default.aspx Open Source Interoperability Initiative Server Protocol Program Open Specification Promise Community OutreachInteroperability Principles – дают новые возможности для разработчиков и и большую совместимость на рынке.

Port25 is about the closest thing you can get to completely open discussion between Microsoft developers, managers and executives and the open source community at large. Everything good, bad, and ugly about Microsoft and Open Source is talked about on this site. Port25 also posts or links to where technology-related announcements are made. So, if there is a new SDK or a new plug-in related to Open Source, this is usually where you’ll hear about it.

The first question you might have is – ‘why did Microsoft create CodePlex’ when Sourceforge.net already exists?Sourceforge.net is a highly popular collaboration environment for open source developers. There are many Windows open source projects hosted on that site, as well as a few Microsoft sponsored projects. That said, we felt that we needed to invest some of our extensive background in software development and application lifecycle management technologies to push open source collaboration environments further. CodePlex.com is the result of that investmentWe took some of our commercial products like Team Foundation Server and used it as a basis for CodePlex.com. One of the things that CodePlex takes from Team Foundation Server is the notion of integrated work items. One of the challenges of any software project – and especially so in the case of open source projects – is for a developer to try and understand how the software constructed. In particular, what information and what decisions were made at any given point in time. With CodePlex, open source developers have the ability to track issues, bugs, tasks and change requests along side their source code. When a check-in is made, that check-in can be associated with one or more of these work items. This gives developers the ability to get a complete picture of what work is being done.CodePlex has brought together a diverse group of users, including developers, who initiate and contribute to projects on the site; evaluators, who look to put the projects on the site to practical use; and people in between—evaluators who become so much a part of the community that they evolve into project contributors. Together these user groups have created over 2,000 projects .

Channel9 is another developer community site hosted on MSDN. Channel 9 does interviews with various developers and project managers at Microsoft. It is a great way to get a look behind the scenes at Microsoft and see what makes the Microsoft machine work – in most cases, you’ll just see really passionate people who are excited to tell you what they are working on. Channel 9 is comprised of developer focused content with blogging, webcasts, videos, interviews, etc.

Microsoft recently announced Silverlight™, a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering richer user experiences on the Web. In addition, Microsoft will work with Novell Inc. to deliver Silverlight support for Linux, called Moonlight, and based on the project started on mono-project.com.For more information see: http://www.mono-project.com/Moonlight

In January 2007, shortly before the roll out of the Windows Vista operating system, Mozilla engineers discovered that Windows Vista did not support Windows Media® Player on the Firefox Web browser. Because of the good relationship fostered by their 2006 visit to Redmond, Mozilla engineers immediately contacted Microsoft to discuss the problem. Despite that Firefox is one of the most successful competitors to Windows® Internet Explorer®, employees of the Microsoft Open Source Software Lab recognized that all customers would be best served if Windows Vista supported Firefox as fully as possible. The lab partnered with the Windows Media Player team to figure out what was wrong. The diligent efforts of all the participants paid off, and in April 2007, a plug-in resolving the problem was released through the Lab’s Port25 Web site. Upon release, Mozilla added the link to their Firefox plug-ins page within minutes. Mozilla’s ready cooperation and quick adoption of the plug-in was a testament to the good relationship that had developed between Mozilla and Microsoft over the course of the project. For more information, see: http://download.microsoft.com/download/D/4/4/D44F6287-41F5-48EB-A93A-23D251B2704E/OpeninActionMozilla.pdf.

In August 2007, Microsoft submitted two of its licenses to the Open Source Initiative (OSI) for approval as open source licenses. This was done to give the community additional confidence that the code that Microsoft is sharing is truly open source and was the result of reasoned reflection by Microsoft about how to serve partners and customers best. After a lengthy and sometimes spirited community dialogue, the OSI approved the Microsoft Public License (Ms-PL) and the Microsoft Reciprocal License (Ms-RL) as open source licenses in October 2007. With the approval comes a recognition that Microsoft is committed to its contributions to and participation in the open source community. For more information, see: http://www.microsoft.com/opensource/licenses.mspx

When Mozilla engineers found that Windows Media player would not work in Firefox on Windows Vista, just before Vista’s release they reached out to the Open Source Software Lab at Microsoft.

Examples of mixes of open source and traditional proprietary technologies, as well as mixtures of commercial and community focused technical and business strategy include:IBM: Eclipse Java Tool (open source initiative began, funded, supported by IBM), promotion of Linux, Jazz “open commercial,” free versions of products, WebSphere Community Edition (open source), WebSphere (closed source), CICS (closed source), AIX (closed source) Sun: Purchase of MySQL, opening Java SDK, support of NetBeans, OpenSolaris Oracle: Purchase of SleepCat, free versions of products, JdeveloperMicrosoft: MS-PL & MS-RL: more than 150 MS initiatived projects, Sharepoint, XNA Codeplex projects; DLR and IronPython and IronRuby; Release of free versions of products, support of open source projects, opening of APIs to support InteropNovell: SUSE Linux, ZenWorks, Identity Manager (closed source). Novell placed in the middle in this example as Jeff Jaffe, Novell’s CTO has stated explicitly “Our strategy is a mixed source strategy.” (http://www.novell.com/ctoblog/?p=67 )Red Hat: Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat Network(Note: the point of this slide is not to argue over which vendor’s “mix” is more or less open source – the key point is that all have a mix to some degree.)See video illustrating at: \\\\wpg\\users\\linux compete\\mmadden\\ (folder Sam’s vids)

We do not belive that there is one way to develop software, or to build a business around software. There is not a “one size fits all” solution or “magic bullet.”  We do respect open source approaches as one set of choices that exist today and that we expect those options to continue to exist in the future.  We will continue to compete with some products, some of which may be open source. But we view open source as set of technologies, development approaches, and concepts that are much broader than any particular product or company.

    9. • .NET source code released: Developers welcomed the January 2008 release, which allowed review of underlying code for debugging and code review. • PHP development: Microsoft partnered with Zend Technologies Ltd. to improve PHP support in Internet Information Services 7 and Windows Server, despite PHP being a direct competitor to ASP.NET. • CardSpace interoperability: Microsoft sponsored open source projects around CardSpace to broaden support, including support for the OpenID project. • Office Open XML (OOXML) file formats: Microsoft promoted OOXML as an Ecma and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) industry standard to replace the closed, binary formats of Office. • Microsoft interoperability pledge: Microsoft loosened access to key APIs and protocols, and launched a strategic, four-point program aimed at improving interoperability with third-party solutions. • Windows Vista virtualization licensing eased: Microsoft suddenly reversed course and allowed virtualization of lower-end SKUs of Windows Vista. A legal complaint by Phoenix Technologies Ltd. was likely at least part of the reason for the move. • IE8 emphasizes standards: Another sudden reversal ensured that IE8 would, by default, support W3C standards, rather than favor the proprietary quirks of pages written for the IE7 browser. • Mono and Moonlight: Microsoft provided formal support and endorsement for the Novell Inc.-led efforts to create Linux versions of the .NET Framework and Silverlight runtime.
