  2. 2. Module 1 Keeping One Step Ahead <ul><li>Learning Intentions </li></ul><ul><li>You can recognise potential danger. </li></ul><ul><li>You can choose safe options that will help you to keep yourself safe. </li></ul>

Module 1 Keeping One Step Ahead <ul><li>Introduction </li></ul><ul><li>Recall some of the things that you have learnt during the Keeping Ourselves Safe programme in primary school. </li></ul><ul><li>The KOS Box - You can write any questions that you want answered on a piece of paper and ‘post’ them in the box. These can be anonymous. The police officer and I will answer the questions throughout this unit. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Module 1 Keeping One Step Ahead KOS Box Activity On a piece of paper write a time you, or someone you know, felt unsafe. No names are required. ‘Post’ these in the KOS Box.

Module 1 Keeping One Step Ahead Choosing Safe Options Read the story The Unwelcome Visitor by Beverley Dunlop. <ul><li>Questions: </li></ul><ul><li>What is the potential danger? </li></ul><ul><li>What could the young person do? </li></ul>In your group work through a flow diagram with to find what you think is the best and safest option for the main character. Here is an example
  6. 8. Module 1 Keeping One Step Ahead Class Discussion Each group will give their best option. Discuss the consequence of each option. <ul><li>Questions: </li></ul><ul><li>Which do you think is the safest choice? </li></ul><ul><li>Why? </li></ul>
  7. 9. Module 1 Keeping One Step Ahead Group Activity On the sheet of paper are two more stories, ‘ The Bullies ’ and ‘ At a Party ’. In your group decide which story to read and work through. Using the flow diagram we used earlier, work through it to find the best and safest option for the main character.

  9. 13. Module 1 Keeping One Step Ahead Role Playing Safety Strategies In your group choose one of the ‘What If…’ situations to role play. The objective of the role play is to find a strategy to keep safe in that situation. Follow these steps: <ul><li>work out a scene for the situation </li></ul><ul><li>allocate roles </li></ul><ul><li>decide on a safety strategy to try </li></ul><ul><li>role play the scene </li></ul>
