    • Mid Wales Energy Agency
    • Charity & not-for-profit organisation
    • Based in Machynlleth, covering Powys, Gwynedd, Ceredigion
    • Staff of ten
    • Mission is ‘To reduce carbon dioxide emissions through the promotion and facilitation of sustainable energy projects in Mid Wales’
  • 3. Wood Fuel Powys
    • 2 ½ year project
    • Funded by Glasu
    • Increase the use of wood fuels in Powys
    • Information and advice
    • Feasibility studies
    • Training
    • Technology transfer
  • 4. Wood Fuel
    • Wood is renewable /Zero CO2
    • Local resource
    • New market for timber co-products
    • Competitive fuel costs
    • Support mechanisms in place
    • Opportunities for businesses
    • Industrialisation of the countryside?
  • 5. Recent research
    • Welsh wood fuel resource is small – 500,000 to 1,000,000 odt a year (could heat 10-20% housing)
    • Current demand is even smaller – 150,000 odt a year
    • Demand and number of installations are growing rapidly
    • Will need all of current resource
    • Then think of increasing resources – changing management practices, single stem energy crops, short rotation coppice
  • 6. Part of an integrated solution
    • Energy Saving
    • Wind – large and small
    • Solar thermal
    • Photovoltaics
    • Passive solar
    • Hydro
    • Biofuels
    • Sustainable transport
  • 7. Now is the time…
    • Support from Government
    • Rising fossil fuel prices
    • WEBS grant
    • Clear Skies
    • Wood Fuel Powys
    • ROCs
    • Enhanced capital allowance, Action Energy, EGS
    • Bioenergy Capital Grants
  • 8. Current and proposed installations - Wales
    • Welsh Assembly – 370kW Chip
    • Llandysul -260kW pellets
    • Crymych schools, Pembrokeshire – 490kW
    • Llanwddyn – 520kW Chip
    • Aberaeron -550kW
    • Abergynolwyn, Dinas Mawddwy, Corris
    • Llandrindod High School
    • Co-firing / CHP power stations
    • Domestic pellet boiler installations
  • 9. A New Generation
    • Mature Technology
    • High efficiency - 85 to 90%
    • Appropriate scale – domestic to industrial
    • Logs, chips and pellets
  • 10. Fuel prices – useful heat Assumptions   Wood chip £70/tonne (@30% mc)   Wood chip £30/tonne (@50% mc)   Wood Pellets £130/tonne   Heating Oil 30p/litre   LPG 33p/litre   Mains gas 1.8p/kWh
  • 11. Capital costs
    • Log Boiler (domestic)- £6,000 to £10,000
    • Pellet Boiler (domestic) - £6,000 to £15,000
    • Chip Boiler (large domestic) - £9,000 +
    • Chip Boiler (commercial) – £30,000 +
    • Grant funding probably available
  • 12. What’s in it for you?
    • Wood fired heating system for home or business
    • Self supply of fuel
    • Processing and selling fuel to others
  • 13. Fuel supply issues
    • Moisture content
    • 25- 35% for chip
    • <18% for pellet
    • 2 year seasoned for logs
    • Size of chip – uniformity
    • Frequency of delivery
    • Mode of delivery
    • Can you meet demand alone?
  • 14. Summary
    • Market currently small but growing rapidly
    • Need to make most of wood resource
    • Support / grants available for installation of wood fuel heating equipment and for fuel suppliers
    • We can give free, impartial advice
