  2. 2. Mapping for change? <ul><li>“ It is not down in any map; true places never are” Herman Melville (Moby Dick) </li></ul><ul><li>Or maybe we don't have the right kind of maps… </li></ul><ul><li>Yet… </li></ul>
  3. 3. Green and participatory mapping? Why worry? <ul><li>We have a global environmental crisis. </li></ul><ul><li>We need to achieve 80% cuts in CO2 emissions by 2050 to avoid seriously damaging and irreversible climate change. </li></ul><ul><li>So why worry about making green maps? </li></ul>
  4. 4. Why map? <ul><li>Mapping to record what is being done? </li></ul><ul><li>Mapping to record what people think? </li></ul><ul><li>Mapping to show what isn't being done? </li></ul><ul><li>Mapping to stimulate change and action? </li></ul>

Green Mapping in London - the story so far (1) The London Green Map <ul><li>London 21 was set up to act as a net work for those working on local sustainability </li></ul><ul><li>This involves a huge range of issues and organisations </li></ul><ul><li>Some form of information system was vital </li></ul><ul><li>This led to the idea of a Green Map, launched five years ago as the world’s first interactive ‘Green Map’ </li></ul>

Green Mapping in London - the story so far (3) The London Green Map <ul><li>Now being redeveloped… </li></ul><ul><li>Borough-level maps have been produced </li></ul><ul><li>A three year project on mapping environmental inequalities </li></ul><ul><li>Cooperation with UCL led to the idea of ‘Mapping change for sustainable communtiies’ and community mapping </li></ul>

The next challenges <ul><li>Mapping to stimulate change and action </li></ul><ul><li>Develop participatory work (even where maps may not be appropriate) </li></ul><ul><li>Mapping linked to social networking </li></ul><ul><li>Cooperation between the ‘experts’ and local communities </li></ul><ul><li>Mapping as an everyday tool </li></ul><ul><li>Link this work to other practice </li></ul>
  11. 11. “ Mapping for change” <ul><li>London 21 sees this as an important area for development </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Locally </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Nationally </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>And beyond! </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The Board of London 21 has agreed to set up a new social enterprise venture to take this work forward. </li></ul><ul><li>Making the tools more easily accessible </li></ul><ul><li>We are open to your ideas! </li></ul>
