Chris Church (London 21) Mapping For Sustainable Communities 170608 - Presentation Transcript

    1. Chris Church Chair, London 21 Director, CEA June 2008 Mapping as a tool for social and environmental change
    2. Mapping for change?
      • “ It is not down in any map; true places never are” Herman Melville (Moby Dick)
      • Or maybe we don't have the right kind of maps…
      • Yet…
    3. Green and participatory mapping? Why worry?
      • We have a global environmental crisis.
      • We need to achieve 80% cuts in CO2 emissions by 2050 to avoid seriously damaging and irreversible climate change.
      • So why worry about making green maps?
    4. Why map?
      • Mapping to record what is being done?
      • Mapping to record what people think?
      • Mapping to show what isn't being done?
      • Mapping to stimulate change and action?
    5. Green Mapping in London - the story so far (1) The London Green Map
      • London 21 was set up to act as a net work for those working on local sustainability
      • This involves a huge range of issues and organisations
      • Some form of information system was vital
      • This led to the idea of a Green Map, launched five years ago as the world’s first interactive ‘Green Map’
    6. Green Mapping in London - the story so far (2) The London Green Map
    7. Green Mapping in London - the story so far (3) The London Green Map
      • Now being redeveloped…
      • Borough-level maps have been produced
      • A three year project on mapping environmental inequalities
      • Cooperation with UCL led to the idea of ‘Mapping change for sustainable communtiies’ and community mapping
    8. Community Maps Community Maps
    9. Community Maps – The Royal Docks map under development
    10. The next challenges
      • Mapping to stimulate change and action
      • Develop participatory work (even where maps may not be appropriate)
      • Mapping linked to social networking
      • Cooperation between the ‘experts’ and local communities
      • Mapping as an everyday tool
      • Link this work to other practice
    11. “ Mapping for change”
      • London 21 sees this as an important area for development
        • Locally
        • Nationally
        • And beyond!
      • The Board of London 21 has agreed to set up a new social enterprise venture to take this work forward.
      • Making the tools more easily accessible
      • We are open to your ideas!
    12. Thank you!
