    • Report on the first seminar on transforming international and national finance institutions CADAM in collaboration with Labour League Foundation organized a seminar on “TRANSFORMING IFI AND NATIONAL INSTITUTIONS FOR ECOLOGICAL SAFETY AND DISTRIBUTIVE JUSTICE FOR RENEWABLE RESOURCE BASED LIVELIHOODS”on the occasion of India Social Forum in Hall No W-9 at Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium. The objectives of the seminar were the following: 1. Establishing the linkage of the usurious finance system and ecologically hostile development processes 2. Communicating the arguments in favour of creating movement for interest free loans and preventing the downslide in the loss of ecologically sustainable livelihoods 3. Discussing the movements for reforming the finance sector 4. generating a consensus for strengthening the movement for finance sector Dr.Muhammad Mukhtar Alam introduced the context of the seminar Anti-globalization protest defines our times as much as there are endeavors for globalization of the movement of capital and technologies, labour and services, consumption and production patterns. Globalization of the non-renewable resource based consumption and production pattern has been indicted to be responsible for increase in the emission of green house gases. Millennium Development Goals has been signed along with several other documents that call for action for ensuring justice for all and ensuring an era of peace with justice. In India, Wada Na Todo Abhiyan (Keep the promises campaign) and a group of organisations organized a South Asia Peoples Summit Against Poverty in September 2005 where declarations reflected the demands of the people, marginalized all over the country. . There is a global UN campaign for realizing millennium development goals with calls for debt cancellation and debt forgiveness for realizing millennium development goals. Events have been planned all over the world calling for debt cancellation. Oxfam has led a campaign for debt relief and trade justice. Some announcement for debt reliefs were made but then the same was proposed for deduction from the grants that were to be provided under the official development assistance. It can be seen that debt relief is not a sustainable solution as there is no guarantee that unsustainable debts will not be created in the future. Satish Kumar Karna pointed out the hurdles in getting the reform of international finance institutions. He noted that there were many powerful stakeholders who were not interested in understanding the importance of transforming in international institutions. He called for organizing a national level consultation following a series of state level consultations as the actions for transforming the international institutions called for generation of strong public advocacy and lobby with the parliamentarians. Dr. Mukhtar Alam appreciated the suggestion of Satish Kumar Karna and called for more and more support to the proposal for transforming International Finance Institutions for ensuring protection of ecologically sustainable livelihoods and renewable resource based
    • habitats. Considering the lack of guarantee for non-renewable resources, he called for elimination of money generated from speculative and usurious finance system. He called for campaigning for the creation of interest free money by the national institutions. Ms.Pushpa Vivek called for generating more awareness on the issue as most of the organisation did not understand the importance of reforming the finance institutions. Jawahar Jyoti proposed that a conference could be organized in Jharkhand on the issue for creating state level capacity and network for taking up the work for advocacy and lobby with the parliamentarians, academicians and economists. The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks for all the participants in the seminar WORKSHOP ORGANISED ON TRANSFORMING IFI AND NATIONAL INSTITUTIONS FOR ECOLOGICAL SAFETY AND DISTRIBUTIVE JUSTICE FOR RENEWABLE RESOURCE BASED LIVELIHOODS Hall Number W-9, ISF Grounds, Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi Date 10 November 2006 New Delhi List of participants Sn Name Address Telephone and Email Address 1.
