  • 3. ENTREPRENEURSHIP STEVENSON (1983) DEFINED ENTREPRENEURSHIP AS “THE PURSUIT OF OPPORTUNITY BEYOND THE TANGIBLE RESOURCES THAT YOU CURRENTLY CONTROL.” THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF ENTREPRENEURSHIPS: 1) COMMERCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP 2) SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP 3) CORPORATE ENTREPRENEURSHIP
  • 4. COMMERCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP • A COMMERCIAL ENTREPRENEUR IS ONE WHO CREATES PROFITABLE ENGAGEMENTS RESULTING IN PRIVATE GAIN. COMMERCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP BENEFITS SOCIETY IN THE FORM OF NEW AND VALUABLE GOODS, SERVICES AS WELL AS JOBS AND CAN HAVE EFFECTIVE SOCIAL IMPACTS. EXAMPLE: IN 1994, JEFF BEZOS LEFT HIS EMPLOYMENT AS VICE-PRESIDENT OF D. E. SHAW & CO., A WALL STREET FIRM, AND MOVED TO SEATTLE, WHERE HE FOUNDED A COMPANY THAT WOULD BECOME THE WORLD’S LARGEST ONLINE RETAILER (AMAZON). OPPORTUNITY: • AFTER READING A REPORT ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE INTERNET WHICH PROJECTED ANNUAL WEB COMMERCE GROWTH AT 2300%, JEFF BEZOS REALIZED THAT INTERNET COULD MEET CONSUMERS' NEEDS IN A UNIQUE WAY • HE BEGAN TO WORK ON A BUSINESS PLAN FOR WHAT WOULD EVENTUALLY BECOME AMAZON.COM, WHICH WAS FOUNDED IN BEZOS' GARAGE IN
  • 5. COMMERCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP ENDEAVOR: • BEZOS CREATED A LIST OF 20 PRODUCTS WHICH COULD BE MARKETED ONLINE, WHICH HE NARROWED DOWN TO FIVE MOST PROMISING PRODUCTS WHICH INCLUDED: COMPACT DISCS, COMPUTER HARDWARE, COMPUTER SOFTWARE, VIDEOS, AND BOOKS. • BEZOS FINALLY DECIDED THAT HIS NEW BUSINESS WOULD SELL BOOKS ONLINE, DUE TO: 1. THE LARGE WORLD-WIDE DEMAND FOR LITERATURE 2. THE LOW PRICE POINTS FOR BOOKS 3. A HUGE NUMBER OF TITLES AVAILABLE IN PRINT. • BEZOS WANTED A NAME FOR HIS COMPANY THAT BEGAN WITH "A" SO THAT IT WOULD APPEAR EARLY IN ALPHABETIC ORDER.
  • 6. COMMERCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP RETURNS: IN THE FIRST TWO MONTHS OF BUSINESS, AMAZON SOLD TO ALL 50 STATES AND OVER 45 COUNTRIES. WITHIN TWO MONTHS, AMAZON'S SALES WERE UP TO $20,000/WEEK INITIALLY, IT DID NOT PROFIT FOR FOUR TO FIVE YEARS. THIS "SLOW" GROWTH CAUSED STOCKHOLDERS TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE COMPANY NOT REACHING PROFITABILITY FAST ENOUGH TO JUSTIFY INVESTING IN, OR TO EVEN SURVIVE IN THE LONG-TERM. AMAZON SURVIVED THE “DOT.COM” BURST, AND GREW IN THE 21ST CENTURY TO BECOME A HUGE PLAYER IN ONLINE SALES IT FINALLY TURNED ITS FIRST PROFIT IN THE FOURTH QUARTER OF 2001: $5 MILLION, THUS PROVING TO THE SKEPTICS THAT BEZOS' UNCONVENTIONAL BUSINESS MODEL COULD SUCCEED. THE COMPANY GREW SALES BY 28% IN 2009, AND TODAY IT IS THE LARGEST ONLINE RETAILER IN THE WORLD
  • 7. SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP UNLIKE COMMERCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP, WHICH TYPICALLY MEASURES PERFORMANCE IN PROFIT AND RETURN, SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP HAS AN EMBEDDED SOCIAL PURPOSE. EXAMPLE: • THE BILL AND MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION, BASED IN SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, IS RUN BY THREE TRUSTEES, BILL GATES, MELINDA GATES AND WARREN BUFFET.
