  • 4. Former Engro CEO Asad Umar is a revered figure in the corporate world. At just 50 years of age, he has achieved more than what many achieve in a lifetime. Having served as the youngest CEO and President of Engro Corporation for eight years during his 27 year career with the company

  • 6.  Asad Umar was born at Rawalpindi on 25th March 1961  His father was an Army Officer  Asad Umar has five brothers and one sister  Asad Umar is the youngest of all his siblings  Childhood Dream JOB : While growing up, he wanted to be a GD pilot. In fact, the F104 Starfighter was the first love of his life.

Rawalpindi Cantt) After Retirement of his Father his family moved to Karachi Asad Umar Compeleted his Bachelor in Commerce from Government College, Karachi in 1982 He was an average student throughout his academic career but performed well in University Studies at IBA Karachi :
  • 8. He graduated as an MBA from the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi in n 1984 with the highest GPA in the class.
  • 9. He met his wife at IBA (same batch) but she graduated in 86' · Captained the IBA cricket team. · Stood for BASC elections for Office Bearers (General Secretary) but lost. Memories associated with IBA
  • 10. Inspiration has always come from the poetry of Iqbal and from reading books dealing with literature, history, sports and wars etc. My father, who was a student assistant of Quaid-e-Azam, has also been a great source of inspiration.

Asad Umar is a family man.He got married in 1988 and has two kids both of them are currently studying in United Kingdom.He always loves to spend quality time with his family.He also gives the credit of his better professional life to his wife and always listens to the advices and suggestions of her.

  • 13. Mr.Umer started his career from HsBC in Pakistan and joined Exxon chemicals Pakistan Ltd in 1985 He has also worked with Exxon chemicals in Canada as assistant .

  • 15. Job at Exxon Chemical (NOW ENGRO CORPORATION  Exxon Chemical Pakistan Limited in 1985, which is now Engro Corporation Limited.  Two Year Stint in Canada (North America )  He went to Canada in 1989 on two year contract with Exxon Mobile.

  • 18.  Asad Umar became CEO and President of Engro Corporation and took it to the new Horizons which one could not even imagine.
  • 19.  For someone who became CEO at 42 and increased the company’s revenues from Rs13 billion to Rs114 billion in about seven years, the decision to retire at 50 did not take many people by surprise. “I always had this number in my mind. I knew I’d retire around 48, 50 or 52,”
  • 20.  Successful diversification of Engro corporation .  Engro Foods as the highest earning SBU so far.  Most successful CEO of Engro corporation.  He takes Engro to the top five preferred Employers of Pakistan.
  • 21. Achievements con’t…  Umar has not only provided leadership in the organization at various levels, but has also been an active contributor on various boards both inside and outside Engro.  he has dramatically transformed a chemical company into a major Pakistani conglomerate.
  • 22. Achievements con’t…  under his leadership, Engro’s revenues had grown from just Rs13 billion in 2004 to Rs114 billion in 2011, growing at an annualised rate of nearly 36.4%. (Inflation during that time averaged 12.6% per year.)  Umar took Engro from being a local player to a globally competitive one, leading the firm into the $1.1 billion project that set up the world’s largest single-train urea manufacturing plant in Pakistan.
  • 23. Achievements con’t…  He was awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 2010.  I am not much of a believer of individual achievements. I’ve always been a part of a team. So, whatever I’ve achieved so far, the credit goes to my team.

History of Engro corporation  In 1957, the search for oil by Pak Stanvac, an Esso/Mobil joint venture led to the discovery of the Mari Gas field near Daharki – a small, remote area in Upper Sindh province at the time. Esso proposed the establishment of a urea plant in that area which led to a fertilizer plant agreement signed in 1964. In the subsequent year, Esso Pakistan Fertilizer Company Limited was incorporated, with 75% of the shares owned by Esso and 25% by the general public.
  • 25. From Esso to Exxon  As part of an international name change program, Esso became Exxon in 1978 and the Company was renamed Exxon Chemical Pakistan Limited.

  • 30. Engro Foods Limited was officially launched as a fully owned subsidiary of Engro in 2004. Using dairy as a stepping stone to enter into the food business, the Company has established state-of- the-art processing units in Sukkur and Sahiwal, along with an ice cream production facility in Sahiwal.

  • 33. Engro Polymer & Chemicals Limited  an Engro subsidiary, is Pakistan’s leading manufacturer and marketer of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) resin, with an annual PVC production of 150,000 tons. The Company markets its products under the brand name of SABZ. Following recent expansion, the Company now has an integrated facility with the capability to manufacture EDC, VCM, Chlorine and Caustic soda.
  • 34. Engro Powergen  was incorporated in 2008, as a fully owned subsidiary, to develop power projects in Pakistan so as to help reduce the power shortage in the country and earn a competitive return for shareholders.
  • 35. Engro EXIMP Private Limited  established in 2003, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Engro Corporation Limited. The company trades in Fertilizers, Agricultural Commodities and Coal.

Elengy Terminal Pakistan Limited  a wholly owned subsidiary of Engro Corporation Limited, is the Corporation’s newest initiative is aimed at establishing an open access, merchant floating storage re- gasification terminal with a storage capacity of 3.5mtpa under the LNG Policy 2011. Through the establishment of the terminal, the Company will market its capacity to LNG Buyers for storage and regasification of LNG purchased.

Failures cont…..  During the tenure of Asad Umar there is a Urea scandal that Fauji Fertilizer and Engro Fertilizer was fined Rs 5.5 Billion and 3.14 Billion respectively by CCP.They increased the price of Urea bag from Rs 850 to Rs1580 in 2010.It was also said that this increase cause artificial inflation of Food products.
