I was both touched by their act ofgenerosity and inspired by their dedica-tion and unwavering support ofMUFON.I have said it many times and I willcontinue to do so as long as I serve—MUFON is a strong organization todaybecause of the quality of people thatsupport it. From the individual memberswho pay their annual dues, to the fieldinvestigators who volunteer their time,to the state/assistant state/sectiondirectors that lead the way, to thebenefactors who show their lifetimesupport, to the Consultants and Re-search Specialists and Translators thatgive of their expertise, to the boardmembers who plan for MUFON’sfuture, to the staff members at head-quarters—all contribute to makeMUFON the most unique and effectiveUFO organizationin the worldtoday. There havebeen UFO organi-zations that havecome and gone, but MUFONremains as vibrantand dynamic as itwas when JohnSchuessler andWalt Andrusfounded it in 1969.New MUFON Field InvestigatorManual UpdateThe MUFON Field Investigator’sManual,Version 5.0 will finally beavailable for sale at the MUFON 2008Symposium in San Jose, California,July 24–27. • 3MUFON UFO JournalJune 2008Alex Friedman of Plum TV recently interviewed DanAykroyd at Akroyd’s home at Martha’s Vineyard, Massa-chusetts. We know Aykroyd as a member of the originalcast of Saturday Night Live, as an actor who has appearedin many movies, and as a member of “The Blues Brothers”band. He is also an avid ufologist, member of MUFON andproponent of UFO and extraterrestrial research.Dan Aykroyd also is the Director, Hollywood Consultantfor MUFON.Alex: Hi everybody. It’s a beautiful day on Martha’s Vineyardwith noted UFO expert and enthusiast Dan Aykroyd.Dan: Alex, good to see you.Alex: Nice to see you. Thanks for joining us. It’s no mysterywhy people would love coming here to Martha’s Vineyardso much. We’ve had a few experiences here withextraterrestrials. What do you think would be attractiveabout the Vineyard to aliens from another planet?Dan: Well, I had a sighting here, and I don’t think it was ahelicopter, a planet, or a jet plane. There were three otherwitnesses. I’m pretty sure it was two objects, flying wingto wing, about 100,000 feet up, going about 20,000 milesan hour. It was 4:00 in the morning. I woke up my wife.John Mack, the Harvard psychiatrist, got to the pointwhere it’s not whether these things do exist—and that’swhere this discussion starts today—it’s what are theydoing here? And he said, let’s use the knowledge, and let’stry to transform ourselves. If this is happening, if there are various motivations forthese beings to be here, either benevolent or malevolent, let’s get past the skeptical view and get to the point wherethey are real, they are coming and going and they havedifferent purposes on the planet. Can we transformourselves positively with the knowledge that they may bebringing and even the technology?Alex: So, getting beyond the “if,” and getting to the why.Dan: So I believe, not only Martha’s Vineyard is an attractiveplace for them to visit, but also the Rockies, the deserts ofNevada, the mountains of the Alps. This planet is sobeautiful and I think that has a lot to do with it. There’salmost a tourist element; they’re coming to look at theplanet, sightseeing. Perhaps over time, some of them havebeen involved in improving our evolution, in an RNA,DNA type of way. I mentioned the movie Mission to Marswith Tim Robbins. A lot of NASA engineers and personnelliked that movie because it purports that maybe we wereseeded here, to the improvement of humankind as sentientbeings, by a race that was dying on Mars. That seems tobe maybe a plausible theory.Alex: Or a logical, scientific approach.Dan: And now we have the probe there, to see if there reallywas life at some time, whether there is water there—which they seem to think there is—if there are microbesthere, then it verifies that there maybe could have been aprimitive civilization [on Mars], be it amoebic, or moredeveloped, like bipeds. We don’t know.Alex: There’s often talk of reptilians and reptoids, and Imyself get them confused. Could we talk a little bit aboutwhat those two designations are?Dan: Well, I think it’s fair to say that if they would be—if notbrothers and sisters—cousins of each other. There’s theInner Earth, the Blue Earth Theory, the theory that thereare reptoid creatures living beneath our planet. There’s agentleman named Stan Fullam* who’s written a bookcalled Challenges of Change; he seems to be in contactwith an entity that has given him some insight. What’simpressive about the book [is that] it seems to distill a lotof the common theory now—that I’m not alone inexpressing, that many really devoted people who spend alot of their time discussing this believe—and that is thatEarth is being protected from the Reptilians. The Alpha Centauri star system has a military race ofbeings who have made a deal with the Pleiadeans. Do youremember Billy Meier?Alex: No, I don’t.Dan: The Swiss case. He was able to film these UFOs, hewas able to see the ships and meet the people upon them. They were the Pleiadeans, they [looked] Nordic—tall, blonde, blue-eyed, very attractive beings. They basicallymade a contract with the Alpha Centauri star system, withthe military race there, who could basically evaporate aplanet; they have the power to do that. They’re notreptoids, but they have a sort of a mottled turtle-likecomplexion. They have respected the Pleiadeans’ wishthat Earth be unmolested. Without [the Pleiadeans’]protection—the reptoids have ships and the ability tocome here; they’re probably coming here and cheatingand grabbing people anyway.Alex: That’s the theory you’ve spoken about.Dan: A lot of people in ufology are going this far out [hegestures] with it. We may well be under the protection ortwo or more extraterrestrial types of beings…Alex: Benevolent beings…Dan: Benevolent insofar as they are interested in Earth’sprogress, interested in preventing its destruction. • June 20084 MUFON UFO JournalMack before he died was working on a documentaryabout these schoolchildren in Zambia who went out forrecess. After 25 minutes they came back into the schoolchattering and jabbering about the same story, and theteacher separated them and got the story that a small shiphad set down near the trees in the schoolyard. These littlebeings came out and talked to them all, telepathically, andgave them the thought that “you must protect tree, youmust protect bug, you must protect bird, you must protectdog, you must protect where you live. If you don’t [dothis], in the future the earth will be destroyed.” So thereseems to be a consistent message by some of them. Andthen, you take the Hopkinsville, Kentucky, case of 1953,and you just go “What the hell was that?”[Editor’s note: the date should be 1955.]You can look; you can go into the archives of theHopkinsville papers. The sheriff had to respond to a familythat was basically tormented by creatures and beings foran entire night. They didn’t look like any Greys; theydidn’t look like any Pleiadeans or Reptoids.Alex: They weren’t tall and attractive…Dan: They had a horn here [indicates nose], and a horn here[indicates both ears], big red eyes, and they had claws, and they basically tormented this family, jumping on theroof, hooting, breaking windows. Shotguns were used torepel them. The Sheriff responded. So, what was that?Where they just delinquents, vandals? They were up to nogood.Alex: There could be, you know, punk aliens.Dan: Punk aliens, sure, with the technology to skip fromdimension to dimension like they do, or from vastdifferences in space and time, compressing them intowormhole to wormhole, you know, Einstein-Rosen Bridgetheory, using whatever propulsion they’re using. Ourphysics encompasses this; we can study zero-pointenergy, zero-point fusion, electromagnetics, gravitons andthe control of gravity. It’s all within our theory to do it; wejust don’t have the technology; we don’t have the fuelelements to do it because we’re not [as] advanced [as]these beings are. So Hopkinsville, Kentucky, I don’t knowwhat that was!Alex: Anything could’ve happened.Dan: And then there’s Mothman. Richard Gere made a movieabout this creature who seemed to have a premonitiveprojection on disasters and was able to tell people whenthe bridge [would be] collapsing. Of course, not manypeople listened.Alex: Prophetic powers.Dan: That was the greatest bridge collapse I’ve ever seen in afilm. And again, when I sit here, and people look at me andsay, “Well, Dan Aykroyd, you know, he’s speaking alone.”I’m not speaking alone!Alex: Absolutely not.Dan: If you get on the website www.mufon.com, get onStanton Friedman’s website, get on the John Mackwebsite, read Shirley MacLaine’s book, read about all ofthe projects the U.S. Air Force had. People say, “Well thegovernment denies the existence.” Well, actually theydon’t. The government has never denied the existence ofthese things. They just say, “We don’t know what it is—or we’re not willing to say what it is.”Alex: You’d even mentioned there’s talk that some currentgovernment leaders may be shape-shifting reptiles now.Dan: Well, I don’t know if they’re shape-shifting reptiles. It’sa theory.Alex: Do they dabble in our affairs? To what degree?Dan: Well, I think that there has been some RNA, DNAinfluence or tweaking to bring us to a certain point ofevolution. Philip Corso—who wrote The Day afterRoswell—credits LED and some of the digital advances inelectronics and also advances in graphite and radarcloaking, to extraterrestrial technologies. There is a bit of acontroversy there. Some believe him, some don’t.Alex:Huh.Dan: I honestly think Laura Bush, the President’s wife, is astarchild.Alex: Interesting.Dan: …because she has the high cheekbones, and thebeautiful eyes. She’s a very compassionate person, aloving person. Maybe there’s a history in her mother’s orgrandmother’s past, where there might be some memoryof abduction, or not. I don’t know.Alex: I guess nothing precludes one from being First Ladyand …Dan: I think that you could maybe draw up a theory thatmaybe she was purposely picked to get near the seat ofpower. They would have loved to have one of their own inthere, in the presidency, but they got close enough withthe First Lady. In that case, I think nothing but a positiveinfluence has come of it.Alex:Absolutely.Dan: I don’t think she could stop the war, and I think herhusband went into the war with really compassionateviews and he was just manipulated by people that sort oftook advantage of him.Alex: By reptoids.Dan Aykroyd InterviewContinued from page 3Continued on page 10

Chris Bledsoe, his 17-year-old sonChris Jr., and three other men werefishing on the Cape Fear River, whenthey began observing a number of UFOsand aliens. Just prior to seeing this craft, the men—individually or together—hadobserved orange orbs and brilliant whiteflying objects, and had also encounteredaliens on the ground in the woods. The five frightened witnesses wereleaving the area in a truck, when theysaw a craft like the one above approxi-mately 200 yards from them, hoveringabout 20 feet above the main road. Itappeared to be rotating clockwise. Theobject was described as a “brilliant whiteegg-shaped object with spikes attachedto it.” It hovered for a while then roseup, moved down the road and thensuddenly shot off over the trees out ofsight.Later that night, around 1:00 or2:00 AM, Chris and Chris Jr. and theirdogs encountered another alien in theirback yard, at the rear of their four-acreproperty. They described the alien as “4to 5 feet tall, appearing to glow like ithas a glassy appearance around its entirebody, with little to no neck, wearing redgoggles and with a mask-like coveringover the lower part of its face. Itappeared to have a dark plate-like objecton its chest area.”At right is a renditon of the alienseen by Chris Sr. and Chris Jr.This sighting was reported in detailin the February issue of the MUFONUFO Journal, pages 9–11. Why is this material beingreleased now? What’s in the files? Whatmight this mean for the USgovernment? Nick Pope used to run theUK’s UFO project and will discuss thefile release and its wider implications.Nick Pope formerly ran the BritishGovernment’s UFO project at the Ministry of Defense.Initially skeptical, his research and investigation into the UFOphenomenon and access to formerly classified governmentfiles on the subject soon convinced him that the phenomenonraised important defence and national security issues, especially when the witnesses were military pilots or whereUFOs were tracked on radar. Nick also looked into othermysteries such as alien abductions, crop circles and ghosts. He now continues his research in a private capacity and isrecognized as a leading authority on UFOs and theunexplained. He does extensive media work, lectures allaround the world and has acted as consultant on numeroustelevision documentaries.Leslie Kean: An inside look at the November, 2007International Press Conference and at the latestdevelopments in the NASA lawsuitLeslie Kean will present thestrategy behind the November 12,2007, press conference in Washington,DC, and comment on the outcome.Moderated by former ArizonaGovernor Fife Symington, the eventfeatured high level military, aviationand government officials from aroundthe world. Dramatic excerpts from thepresentations will be shown, along withan overview of media coverage. Don Ledger will present two caseshe has been either directly involved withor researched from documents. He willaddress his reasons why aircraft andpassenger safety could be threatenedwhen the comfort zone each pilot likesto see around the aircraft is threatened. He will look at the problems that mightarise from any deep seated concerns the pilot[s] mightexperience during such an encounter and how they mightaffect the safety of the flight. He has noted that somecommon safety attributes on many airliners may causedistress to the crew or the passengers of these aircraft.Inclosing he’ll consider whether the seeming lack of concern bythe authorities when the flight crew report UAP adds to thestress of the pilots and crew?Don Ledger is an author and pilot living in Nova Scotia,Canada. But I think that if she is astarchild, she’s one of the good ones.Alex: Okay, Dan, for our viewers, if they are lucky enough tohave an encounter, either visually, or an abduction…Dan: Or unlucky enough, according to some.Alex: —or unlucky enough—to find themselves in thatsituation, what advice would you give them?Dan: I don’t think there’s much you can do about it. TheAllagash Boys—of theAllagash Reservoir [abduction] inMaine—they shone their flashlight at one, and it tookthem. It took them all in a group.[Editor’s note: Four men out fishing were abducted inAugust 1976.]Alex: So don’t shine your flashlight.Dan: But if you don’t shine your flashlight, maybe you [still]submit. If they want you, they’re going to come and getyou and they’re going to put all your autonomic reflexesinto neutral and you won’t be able to do a thing about it.Alex: That sounds delightful… I’m joking. Dan, I’ll tell you,we’ve got so much more [we could] cover, but we want tothank you so much for at least touching on this subject.Dan: I’m not alone. I’m merely speaking about what I’vebeen reading and from personal experience of meetingpeople who are so credible and offer these stories and say,“Why? How can we change ourselves? How can we makeour world around us better? How can we relate better tohuman beings? Jeff is just terrific and a definite asset toMUFON.Elaine DouglassState Director UtahMoab, UtahHello Mr. Carrion:Upon reading the most recent issue of the MUFON UFOJournal (April 2008), I felt compelled to write you in regardsto the cover story, “The Drones and the CARET Documents:One Year Later: Part 1.”Having been in the computer graphics industry for thepast 14 years (and before that, a Film / Photography major incollege), I can say with 100% certainty that the “photos” youdisplay on pages 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 are 3D renders of a craftdigitally composited into real photos. The most tellingforgeries are the two “photos” at the bottom of page 8: theseare both computer renders using a method called “globalillumination.” This method of rendering utilizes real-worldlight models to product realistic render results. The pictureon the bottom left of page8 is a textbook example of a globalillumination render, which is usually rendered within a white“dome” of virtual space. There are also problems with inconsistent lighting(reflection, backfill, exposure) and anti-aliasing (how acomputer blurs pixels together to achieve the appearance ofsmooth edges.) It would appear, after visiting your link tocoasttocoastam, that several other computer graphics expertsare calling this a hoax as well. http://www.coasttocoastam.com/gen/page2024.html?theme=lightThere are several other aspects of the story that feelparticularly weak to me, but since my field of expertise iscomputer graphics and photography, I will not go into detailon those.Best to you and the commuity at large,John ClarksonMUFON MemberAldie,VirginiaMUFON MembersMessage Boardmufonmembers.proboards55.comPassword: Hynek1947(casesensitive)Donations Neededfor Silent Auction at SymposiumDo you have any UFO memorabilia that you wouldbe willing to donate for the SilentAuction fundraiserat the Symposium in California on July 24-27?If so, please mail your items to:Ruben Uriarte2563 Copa Del Oro Dr.Union City, California 94587Leave a Legacyto MUFONAllow your work to live on. . .Please remember MUFON in yourwill. • June 200814 MUFON UFO JournalBy Joseph R. CalamiaThe subject of Unidentified Flying Objects (Unconven-tional Flying Objects if you so prefer) is a multi-facetedtopic. To the field investigator, it is an intense subject, andfor the purpose of seeking the truth, it is serious business! The structured investigative format utilized by MUFONand other such organizations prove that the subject of UFOsis no laughing matter. Ongoing investigations are important,as they may someday unlock the door to the world’s greatestmystery. To a field investigator, it should be apparent that althoughthe topic and investigation are serious, it does not mean thatwe can’t maintain a sense of humor about the subject ofUFOs and “little green men.” Sometimes, a sense of humormay just be the key needed to gain the confidence of areluctant witness. It’s also important not to become “robotic” in our duties, and lose that one very important aspect of any investiga-tion… human compassion and understanding. On June 24, 1947, pilot Kenneth Arnold noted nineobjects flying in a chain formation near Mt. Rainier, Washing-ton. He described the objects as “resembling flat saucer-likeshapes” and that their motion “resembled a saucer skippingacross the water.” The news media dubbed the objects“Flying Saucers.” Although Mr. Arnold also later describedone of the objects as more of a “crescent-shaped flying wingdesign,” the name Flying Saucer stuck in the minds of thepublic. The mere term seemed to ignite the imaginations ofthousands. Visions of Killer Kane and Buck Rogers suddenlyballooned into flashbacks of Orson Welles and “War of theWorlds.” Suddenly, Little Green Men from Mars took onmore importance than just something made-up in somescience fiction comic strip.People considered the possibility of extraterrestrial lifemore seriously. When we as human beings begin to fearsomething unknown, or understand that there may be“things” out there beyond our understanding, we try toprotect ourselves both physically and psychologically. Humoris one such protection utilized by all of us in situations thatcause ongoing stress—situations such as a UFO sighting oralien encounter. The topic of UFOs and/or Flying Saucers was not lost tothe marketing industry by any means! The toy industries hada new topic, and so did the music industry. In June of 1958, Sheb Wooley came out with a top 40novelty song entitled “Purple People Eater.” The song wasabout a purple alien from space. The lyrics began: “He was aone eyed, one horned, flying purple people eater…and hesure looked strange to me...” The tune made fun of numer-ous alien sightings reported in the mid and late 1950s.Another song, by Rockabilly hall-of-famer “Sleepy” LaBeef, hit the charts entitled “The Flying Saucer Rock n’Roll.” Many other such songs infiltrated the airwaves withthe same sense of humor. In approximately 1956 or 1957 I had the opportunity toattend a UFO lecture by Major Donald E. Keyhoe. I was only9 or 10 years old at the time but I recall there were about 20people who attended the lecture. Afterwords, Maj. Keyhoeasked if there were any questions from the audience. Ihesitantly raised my hand and asked, “Have you ever seen aflying saucer yourself?”Maj. Keyhoe stopped, looked around the room and said,“the only flying saucer I personally ever saw was the one mywife threw across the table at me.” Naturally, everyonelaughed, but despite Keyhoe’s joke, there was no doubt hewas very serious about UFOs. (His comment might bepolitically incorrect today.)A UFO investigator (like any investigator) must havesome understanding of the human psyche and emotion. Tolaunch an interview with character Jack Webb’s Dragnetapproach—”All we want are the facts Ma’am…just thefacts!”—will probably destroy a potentially good interview. In 1998, as a MUFON Field Investigator Trainee (FIA), Ihad the great opportunity to interview Mr. Lonnie Zamora ofSocorro, New Mexico. You may recall Mr. Zamora as a police officer whoreported the touch down and landing of an egg-shaped UFO.The event at the time (April 24, 1964) made headlines, andOfficer Zamora was deluged by Air Force Intelligence, CIA,etc. The case remains as an “Unknown” even today.Lonnie underwent a great deal of stress and after five orsix years refused any further interviews. He did however, finally agree to an interview with me.Although the interview took place some 32 years afterthe incident, Mr. Zamora was extremely guarded and resis-tant. I started the interview process by dutifully taking notesand starting the tape recorder. Unfortunately, I forgot to takealong the most important investigator’s tool of all… “a senseof humor.” Had it not been for the intuitive prodding andsense of humor from my wife, Mr. Zamora’s interviewwould have been nothing more than a “just-the-facts”dialogue.With the injection of a little dose of humor, LonnieZamora spoke freely, seriously and truthfully. The article wassubsequently published in the MUFON Journal in 1998.The country western singer Alan Jackson sings a songentitled “It’s all right to be a redneck.” In the serious study ofUFO investigations, “it’s all right to have a sense of humor.”Joseph R. Alert the Director of Investigations regarding all exceptional casesthat come in. An exceptional case is one that is a recent landing and/or entity case at close range (<300 feet). These require IMMEDIATEfollow-up.8. Work with the Director of Investigations to ensure the timelyassignment and follow-up of all reports by State Directors and FIsrespectively. If you are interested in this new volunteer position, contact Jan Harzanat janharzan@hotmail.com or Chuck Reever at wizard@telis.org.Volunteers are needed to help create an “IFOBoard” to help educate the public on commonly seenIFOs that may look strange and appear to be Unidenti-fied Flying Objects (UFOs), but upon closer examina-tion are really nothing but Identified Flying Objects(IFOs). This board would be posted prominently on theMUFON website and also be linked to CMS. Before awitness submits his or her sighting report, they areasked to review the “IFO Board” to see if what they arereporting matches any known IFO.The plan would be to have a paragraph describingwhat each IFO is and how it would appear to anobserver under various conditions (daytime, nighttime, dusk, low cloud cover, etc.), accompanied by photosand videos to show examples of each.If you are interested in heading up this importantproject or being on the project team, please contactMUFON headquarters at HQ@Mufon.com.Natural PhenomenaSunMoonVenusSun dogsMoon dogsAura BorealisCloudsBirdsDust reflectedWater reflectedLens flareMan-made IFOsGeneral aviation aircraftCommercial aircraftMilitary aircraftHelicoptersRemote ControlAirplanesRC HelicoptersRC UFOs (yes they exist)UnmannedAerialVehicles (UAVs)Party balloonsWeather balloonsHot air balloonsBlimpsKitesCar lights at nightAirplane lightsSearchlightsFlaresProject Manager and Team volunteers soughtto create “Identified Flying Object Board” for website, CMSSome Examples of IFOs:
  • June 200816 MUFON UFO JournalPercePtionsPercePtionsPercePtionsPercePtionsPercePtionsBy Stanton T. FriedmanStanton FriedmanI see so much false and misleadingmaterial about flying saucers and relatedmatters (especially on the internet) thatI am sure one could do a column everyday pointing out the errors and falseclaims and still not cover all the gar-bage. But who would pay somebody todo that? And who would read it any-way? I recently received the secondissue (April/May 2008) of a newbimonthly slick magazine from Englandknown as Alien Worlds. The editor/publisher is Stuart Miller who has beenbusy posting on the internet aboutUFOs for some time. This issue is inlarge format with relatively smallprint—sometimes hard to read for usold guys—often with blue print onblack paper. It is glossy and, because ofall the color, would be hard to photo-copy. Many articles cover a widevariety of subjects. I strongly disagreewith some, but find others of interest. The magazine isn’t cheap costing 3pounds 99 or about $8.00 US. Moreinformation can be obtained fromStuart. (1)Several things caught my eye. Oneis that there is, somewhat surprisingly,a lot of SETI-related material. My newbook Flying Saucers and Science has anentire chapter on the cult of SETI. Inote that Dr. Ian Morrison, head of theJodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, the UK, misrepresents the FermiParadox as do most SETI specialists. He says, “...in something like about 10million years, maybe a hundred millionyears, you could, in principle, colonizethe whole galaxy. All the suitableplanets. What Fermi said was if that’spossible, then why aren’t they here;why haven’t we ever come across anyother alien life form?” (p. 78) Soundslike he wants them to be waiting at thebus stop or airport. This is certainly not what Fermisaid, although many astronomers wouldlike to believe that is what he said. Heactually said, assuming the colonizingcapability: “So where is everybody?”Whole books have been written withvarious answers to the question knownas the Fermi Paradox. My own answer, based on what I heard about Fermi atthe University of Chicago (he died whileI was there) was that he was very fondof using questions as a teaching tool. One obvious answer (mine) is, “Wedon’t know where all of them are, butwe know some are visiting Earth. Somefew people within the government inintelligence and military circles know agreat deal about them and have evenrecovered wreckage and bodies, tried toshoot them down (see FrankFeschino’s Shoot Them Down), andhave been lying about what they knowbig time.” Fermi, who—unlike most ofthe SETI guys, academic astronomers, ancient academics and fossilizedphysicists who attack ufology—knewvery well, from his very importantwork on the multibillion dollar blackbudget Manhattan Project, that hugeand very expensive projects involvingworld class scientists can be conductedin total secrecy… no publications in thePhysical Review. Obviously, it is verydifficult to justify searching for ETsignals with radio telescopes, if aliensare already coming here and someearthlings know it.Another article in Alien Worlds thatcaught my eye was a relatively briefone (pp. 16, 17) by Paul Kimball(producer of a number of high qualityTV documentaries) titled Above andBeyond: Ufology’s Two Biggest Prob-lems: The Condon Effect andRoswellism. I agree with Paul that thewidespread publicity given to theUniversity of Colorado’s loudly pro-claimed (by Dr. Edward U. Condon,1969) “scien-tific” conclu-sions that therewas nothing toUFOs had adevastatingeffect on manywho might havebeen willing toinvestigateUFOs, or teachclasses, orsponsor PhDtheses about them, but had now nowillingness to risk their professionalreputations by doing so. Membership inNICAP and APRO dropped precipi-tously at that time. Lazy and busyjournalists and scientists then had anexcellent excuse to ignore the entirequestion of UFOs and have very oftendone so. There were courageousufologists such as James E. MacDonaldand J. Allen Hynek who pointed out thatCondon’s conclusions were contra-dicted by the data in his report. Theirviews certainly reached fewer peoplethan the paeans of Condon praise fromsuch reporters as Walter Sullivan, science editor of the New York Times, and from the National Academy ofSciences. We slowly seem to beovercoming Condonism, to some extentillustrating physicist Max Planck’scomment that, “New ideas come to beaccepted, not because their opponentscome to believe in them, but becausetheir opponents die and a new genera-tion grows up that is accustomed tothem.”Paul defines Roswellism “in broadstrokes, it is: 1.The unequivocalacceptance of the ExtraterrestrialHypothesis (i.e., UFOs are alien space-UK Magazine Alien Worlds reviewed
  • 17MUFON UFO JournalJune 2008craft) as fact; 2. The unequivocalacceptance that alien spacecraft crashlanded near Roswell in 1947 (and theresulting acceptance that any othercrashed flying saucer story may betrue); and 3. The unequivocal accep-tance that the American Governmenthas covered up the truth about 1 and 2since 1947, in an organized conspiracyof silence that represents a “CosmicWatergate.”I have a serious problem with thisdefinition. I and other serious ufologistsare skeptical and critical of much inufology, so “unequivocal” seems waytoo strong. There is a very largedifference between my conclusion, after intensive study, that SOME UFOsare alien spacecraft, and the notion, implied by Paul, that ufologists believeALL UFOs are alien spacecraft. I don’tknow of any serious ufologist who hasexpressed the latter view. Yes, I amcertainly convinced on the basis of agreat deal of evidence that a crashedflying saucer and bodies were recov-ered near Roswell in 1947. I would bethe first to point out, as I have, thatthere is a lot of irrelevant, false non-sense published about Roswell andother crashes. The garbage (much of itpublished by the government in lyingand misleading volumes) has helpedobfuscate the truth.Paul speaks of the “Aztec hoax inthe early 1950s.” Scott and SuzanneRamsey’s outstanding and persistentresearch on the Aztec event which wasin March 1948 (and should be publishedin book form by the end of 2008)should certainly dispel the label “hoax.”What does Paul mean by an organized“conspiracy of silence?” I neverthought of highly classified researchand development and intelligenceprograms as organized “conspiracies ofsilence” when working on them. Niceterminology. Certainly the ManhattanProject would qualify, wouldn’t it? Howabout the Corona Spy Satellite success-fully launched for the first of manytimes in 1960 and which obtained moredata on Soviet military installations thanall the U-2 flights which preceded it,but was not discussed publicly until1995? What about the NRO’s sevenvery expensive Poppy satelliteslaunched to spy on Soviet shippingbetween 1962 and 1971 and notdiscussed until 2005? How about thebreaking of the German and Japanesecodes involving more than 12,000people and not disclosed for over 25years? I guess you could say “Con-spiracies of Silence,” which soundsominous. Covering up data about alienvisitations and technology is certainly ofno less importance to national securitythan these major multibillion dollarprograms. What is the big deal?Paul claims that “Roswellism hasachieved nothing of substance... basedon a flawed unproved set of assump-tions masquerading as facts.” Hedoesn’t really point out what these areother than to say it is unscientific, a-historical, and no different thanCondon’s methodology. I beg to differ. We point to clear and unambiguousevidence such as firsthand testimonyfrom people directly involved (such asretired General T.J. DuBose, MajorMarcel and Bill Brazel) and to contem-porary press coverage and researchdemonstrating government and skepti-cal misrepresentation.Condon ignored the research of hisown people and the data in his ownreport. So are black holes and wormholes still unproven—but they areindeed very useful concepts, so what?Roswell has certainly opened a can ofworms for the government and causedmany people to look at the UFOquestion in new ways and certainlymade debunkers very unhappy. Toobad. Paul seems to want clear andunambiguous tests such as DNA testingand maybe aliens introduced to theCanadian House of Commons. He doesprovide details of some interestingevents at that august body. Many thingsin science aren’t like that, or in laweither. Newton’s laws are very useful inunderstanding how the universeoperates, even those that are incorrectat the small and large limits of theuniverse. The biggest source of outright liesabout Roswell are the two big reportson Roswell provided by the govern-ment—not by ufologists. What are wesupposed to make of crash test dum-mies, 6 feet tall, weighing 175 pounds, dropped in 1953 and thereafter, andlater used as an “explanation” forreports of small bodies observed in1947? What are we to make of ColonelCavitt’s claim that the Roswell wreck-age covered an area 20 feet square andcould easily fit in a single car wheneven the July 9, 1947, contemporarycover-up newspaper account said itcovered an area 200 yards in diameter? The New York Times front page cover-age of the silly Mogul balloon explana-tion was indeed as bad as Condonism, since Pulitzer Prize winning journalistWilliam Broad ignored the relevant evi-dence (Mogul simply doesn’t fit… soone must acquit).I demonstrate govern-ment UFO lies in an article on mywebsite www.stantonfriedman.com.“Cosmic Watergate” is the right phrase. One must further note that thereare no licensing regulations for qualify-ing ufologists. We in the field can dolittle to keep people from callingthemselves ufologists. There arelicensing regulations for doctors andlawyers, electricians and plumbers, notufologists. Certainly the preponderanceof the evidence indicates that someUFOs are alien spacecraft, Roswellinvolved a crashed flying saucer, andthere has been a substantial governmentcover-up concerning many aspects ofufologyStan Friedman fsphys@rogers.com1. Suddenly the light “turnedon a dime,” reversed direction and spedoff in the other direction. No sound washeard. The light changed color to yellowwhen it turned. The witness lost sight ofthe light when it moved behind a building. The light was about 1/15 the size of a fullmoon and larger than any stars.Comments: The witness has describedsomething in the sky that is quite unusual. He said that on many occasions he hasseen regular aircraft and could alwayshear a sound. The abrupt turns, lack ofsound, and unusual light emulationprompted him to file a report. Givenavailable data I cannot identify thissighting.

  • June 200820 MUFON UFO JournalFiler’s FilesContinued from page 19in the vicinity of the Surry Nuclear PowerPlant at 12:20 PM for 12-20 minutes. Iwas on my bicycle riding east on theColonial Parkway (James City County)when I spotted an object over the JamesRiver, moving from east to west at a veryslow speed. At first I thought it may havebeen a kite because it was a very windyday (the winds were gusting out of theSW at 20-30mph) and people do comeout and fly their kites from the beacheswhen the winds are good. But when Icame to an open spot in the roadunobstructed by trees I stopped to get abetter look and decided it was much toolarge to be a kite.It is a about a mile across the channelto the Surry Station and what I sawappeared to be very near the station’s twindomes and it must have been at least aslarge as they are, and perhaps larger.Besides that the object was moving veryslowly against the wind, and its uppersurface caught the sunlight and reflectedlike a sheet of aluminum foil. Its undersidewas dark. This was definitely a flatteneddisk. And, because it was so windy it didnot seem like a good day to take a blimpup. (And, with security so high these daysit does not seem logical that anyone wouldbe permitted to get that close to powerstation. I have seen military helicopterson training missions over the river, buteven they keep a wide berth from thepower plant.)I have eliminated the possibility ofhelicopters and small aircraft because thisobject was hovering/drifting and appearedto be making a very leisurely circuit ofthe power plant. I walked down to water’sedge to see if I could get a better look, but without binoculars I couldn’t makeout any other useful details. I watched itlike this for a good 15-20 minutes. In thattime it completely circled the station, moving against the wind. It appeared tocorrect its angle at times, very slowlyrocking up and down. I then decided tohurry home, grab my binoculars andcamera and see if I might get a better look.It took me about ten minutes to bike homefrom there and another fifteen to get backon the Parkway by car. But, by the time Ireturned to my original position the objectwas gone. I drove a few miles down theParkway hoping that it might have driftedelsewhere, but the sky was empty exceptfor a few white clouds. Now, I wish Ihad stayed until it left. It would have beeninteresting to see which wayit went.We had severalcommunications with thewitness, following receipt ofhis written report, andfollowing our first telephoneconversation with him. Weare impressed with thethoroughness with which hehas pursued an explanationfor the sighting. We providebelow one of his follow-upcommuniqués to our Center:FOLLOW-UPCOMMUNICATION–I called the Ft. Eustis PublicAffairs Officeand was told by a very helpful femaleofficer that there are no Osprey flying outof Ft. Eustis at this time. She knew ofnone even being stationed at the base, though their fleet of SAR helicopters isslated to be replaced by Osprey at somefuture date. She then told me that she’dheard from some fellow soldiers thatthey’d seen what they thought was theGoodyear blimp flying near Patrick HenryMall in Newport News. Could it havebeen a blimp, I wondered? I did not seeany writing on its sides, but who knows,I might have missed it. I checked theonline photos and I think that I would haveseen those bold, yellow letters even fromthat distance. And, if it was a blimp, whywould it be hanging out near a nuclearpower plant?I then called the Patrick Henry Mallmanagement office and asked them whatthey knew of the Goodyear blimp beingin their area and was told they’d heardnothing about it, and that their securitypersonnel did not report seeing one. Thespokesperson said that if the blimp hadbeen in their area they would have knownabout it, because of the publicity it wouldhave generated. I then tried to get incontact with Goodyear, but they, unfortunately do not have a contact phonenumber. I left them an email message. The local police have no reports of UFOsover the river and were not interested intaking mine down. (I could hear theborderline ridicule in the dispatcher’svoice).
