Maybe we can make it that way – the way God intended it to be – bygiving everyone, eventually, that new perspective from out in space”; andWHEREAS, on September 21, 1987, before the United Nations GeneralAssembly,President Ronald Reagan remarked, “In our obsession with antagonisms of themoment we often forget how much unites all the members of humanity”; andWHEREAS, when one considers the vastness of space and the relatively small sizeof our Planet in comparison to the scale of the Universe, even our most massiveconflicts and violent political disputes among nations seem minor; andWHEREAS, we as a human race have much to learn, not only from one another, butfrom exploration of the planets, stars, and solar systems beyond our own; andWHEREAS, statistically speaking, there are four hundred billion stars just in ourgalaxy alone, and if only one in a million of those had planets, and if just one of amillion of those had life, and if just one out of a million of those had intelligent life, there would be literally millions of civilizations out there, making our conflicts withour fellow man seem irrelevant and petty in the grand scheme of things; andWHEREAS, the expansion of knowledge and the humility from discovering newworlds and unlocking secrets of the stars could greatly impact the progress ofContinued on page 4The Hawaii House of Representa-tives recently drafted a resolutionaddressed to the United Nations, topromote a “search for intelligent lifeand a definitive answer to whether ornot it has come to Earth or is in ourreach.” The committee heard theresolution on March 21, 2007 butunfortunately due to some dissentingcommittee members, the resolutionwas deferred for a period of twoyears.MUFON was asked by Daniel deGracia, Community Liaison for Repre-sentative Rida T.R. Cabanilla—Chairfor the Hawaii House of Representa-tives Committee on InternationalAffairs— to submit testimony regard-ing the resolution. De Gracia statedthat “since MUFON’s mission is tostudy UFOs, I was hoping that possi-bly you could offer comments regard-ing this matter in support, and possiblyinform the Committee about some ofyour findings.”MUFON’s TestimonyThe Mutual UFO Network(MUFON), Inc. has been investigatingand studying the mystery of Unidenti-fied Flying Objects (UFOs) for 38years, taking over where the U.S. AirForce left off when it terminatedProject Blue Book in 1969. Thehypothesis that these strange objectsrepresent a visiting non-human intelli-gence is called the ExtraterrestrialHypothesis or ETH.Unfortunately, ETH has not beenexplored by the scientific communitybecause it is not subject to the tenet ofhypothesis falsifiability, which statesthat a hypothesis that cannot bedisproved is not considered a viablehypothesis.A hypothesis that can be exploredis the Human Manufacture hypothesisor HM. The HM hypothesis statesthat those objects of apparent technological manufacturethat cannot be prosaically explained are being manufac-tured by one or more world governments or by covertelements thereof. That the U.S.Government has been implicated in thispractice is a matter of national record. In late 1993, inquiries from severalUFO researchers led then CIADirector R. James Woolsey to order areview of all CIA files on UFOs.Taking advantage of this opportunity,National Reconnaissance Office(NRO) and government historianGerald K. Haines reviewed thedocuments, conducted interviews, andwrote a study examining the CIA’sinterest and involvement in UFOinvestigations from 1947 until 1990.Haines’s study was published inStudies in Intelligence, a classifiedjournal published quarterly for the U.S.intelligence community. The article,“CIA’s Role in the Study of UFOs,1947-1990,” (https://www.cia.gov/csi/studies/97unclass/ufo.html) appearedin the first semiannual unclassifiededition for 1997, and is a ratherimportant document because it is thefirst time that a U.S. Governmentagency has written a review of itsinvolvement with UFOs.Haines claims that many UFOsightings in the late 1950s and 1960swere actually misidentified secretAmerican spy planes. Moreover, healleges that the U.S. Air Force’sProject Blue Book purposely misledthe public by concocting UFO expla-nations for what it knew to be secretmilitary missions. Note that the CIA isnot accused of deception by Haines;rather, it is the U.S. Air Force thatwillingly made up the bogus explana-tions. After Haines article was re-leased, media reporters asked the U.S.Air Force for comment, and on August4, 1993, Brigadier General RonaldSconyers told the press, “I cannotconfirm or deny that we lied. The U.S.Air Force is committed to providingaccurate and timely information withinthe confines of national security.”Haines also points out that the1953 classified U.S. Governmentsponsored Robertson Panel study ofUFOs and the panel’s recommenda-tions that UFO reports be routinelydebunked and that UFO groups bewatched for subversive activities wasevidence that the spy plane deceptionwas just a small part of an overallstrategy to mislead the public. The Robertson Panel report waslater declassified (available for onlineviewing at http://www.blackvault.com/documents/ufos/cia/robertson0.htm )and it concluded that:“The Panel’s concept of a broadeducational program integrating effortsof all concerned agencies was that itshould have two major aims: trainingand debunking. The training aim would result inproper recognition of unusuallyilluminated objects (e.g., balloons, aircraft reflections) as well as naturalHawaii House Resolution calls for United Nations to Searchfor Intelligent Extraterrestrial LifeContinued on page 5Continued from page 3
    • 5MUFON UFO JournalMay 2007phenomena (meteors, fireballs, mi-rages, noctilucent clouds). The debunking aim would result inreduction in public interest in flyingsaucers which today evokes a strongpsychological reaction. This educationcould be accomplished by mass mediasuch as television, motion pictures, andpopular articles. Basis of such educa-tion would be actual case historieswhich had been puzzling at first butlater explained. As in the case ofconjuring tricks, there is much lessstimulation if the secret is known.Such a program should tend to reducethe current gullibility of the public andconsequently their susceptibility toclever hostile propaganda.”HM however cannot explain all ofthe UFO cases that MUFON hasinvestigated, many of which fall in acategory deemed “highly strange.”These are cases where the observedobjects temporarily immobilize witnessvehicles and even the witnessesthemselves (temporary paralysis), oremit rays of light that abruptly end inthe atmosphere, or bend light raysaround objects. In the same highlystrange category, non-human occu-pants emerge from these objects andsometimes interact with witnesses(sometimes using telepathic communi-cation). The objects observed in theseclose encounters are of a physicalnature as evidenced by the physicaltraces left in the environment (burnedvegetation, imprints in the soil, etc.).These highly strange cases could beevidence of ETH or could be relatedto another hypothesis not yet formu-lated.The Search for ExtraterrestrialIntelligence (SETI) Institute has beenactively searching for signs of othercivilizations in the Universe. It shouldbe stressed that MUFON and theSETI Institute do agree that there isnon-human intelligent life in ouruniverse—where we differ is whetherrepresentatives of those other civiliza-tions have visited planet earth. SETIrejects this possibility outright whereasMUFON is open to the possibility. TheSETI Institute believes that the vastdistances between stars in the Uni-verse is too great for other civilizationsto travel. This is a failure of imagina-Hawaii House Drafts Resolution to UNContinued from page 4tion. If we consider that humanity’stechnological progress spans a short200 years, and then entertain that anon-human technological civilizationmay have started their technologicaljourney thousands, if not millions ofyears before us, the means of travel, harnessing of energy, etc employed bythese other civilizations would bebeyond our comprehension. It is a travesty that the scientificcommunity has not adequately ad-dressed the UFO phenomenon, butinstead has relegated it to the status ofPseudoscience. In this vacuum ofintellectual curiosity, MUFON hasoperated for the last 38 years, assistedby a small group of interested academ-ics who form an “invisible college.”.MUFON implores the United NationsOffice for Outer Space Affairs to takeaction and promote the widespreadscientific study of these mysteriousobjects.James Carrion, MUFON Interna-tional DirectorThe SETI Institute was also askedto submit testimony to the committee.Date of sighting: 8/1/2006 7:45 PMReported: 8/1/2006Location: Bethpage, New YorkDuration: 2 minutesSource of report: MUFON CMSDatabaseInvestigated by: Brian Gaugler,MUFON Field Investigator for LongIsland, New York StateWitnesses: Robert (last name with-held), the main witness and the submit-ter of the initial report, is 34 years oldand at the time of the sighting was ondisability leave from work due to severalbroken bones suffered during a motor-cycle accident. Upon speaking to himover the phone and in person, I foundhim to be a person of solid character, who is intelligent, cheerful, good-natured, down to earth, and a familyman. He replied to my emails as soon aspossible, and did not hesitate to answerany and all questions about the case thatI posed to him over the phone and/orthrough email and in person. I also wasable to speak to his mother Gina, whostruck me as being someone who isbusy with family and other practicalmatters, and so has little time for more“fantastic” things such as UFOs.Robert’s two daughters, aged fourand six, were also present at the time ofthe sighting, and were even the ones todraw attention to the strange objects, but their father has requested anonym-ity for them, and so they will not bediscussed further in this report exceptin the retelling of the UFO encounter. Both Robert and Gina came across ashonest, sincere people who weregenuinely puzzled by what they hadwitnessed, and who initially assisted mein my investigation to the best of theirability.Robert, in particular, has beengreatly affected by his sighting, becom-ing deeply interested in UFOs and otheranomalous phenomena, although thereis no reason to believe that his subse-quent research into the subject hasFrom the Field: MUFON Investigative Report—Bethpage, NYContinued on page 6
    • May 20076 MUFON UFO Journalcontaminated the original report in anyway. Prior to the sighting, Robert wasthe only witness to have been mildlyinterested in the subject, having readWhitley Streiber’s Communion and afew other books on UFOs and con-spiracy theories, but did not have an indepth knowledge on the subject. Hislevel of interest is about average for amember of our society, but seems toosuperficial to be able to make up someof the finer details surrounding hisexperience, as will be detailed further onin the report. In speaking to him abouthis sighting, I do not feel that heembellished the details in any way to inorder to make it more sensational, and Ido not feel that he, or the other wit-nesses, are of the character to fabricatea hoax, though of course the possibilityalways exists. The craft: The UFOs were described asbeing oval-shaped from left to right, described by the witness as beingsimilar in appearance to a “lopsidedegg.” The two objects were estimated tobe between 12 and 15 feet in diameter, with no windows or doors, and ap-peared to be silver colored on the top ofthe craft and a charcoal-grayish coloron the bottom. No lights were seen atany time on either of the two craft, andthey could safely be compared to otherUFOs reported around the world inwhat Hynek termed Close Encounters ofthe First Kind (CE-I). No sounds orsmells of any kind were associated withthe UFOs, and no electro-magneticeffects were reported, with the possibleexception of a defective cell phone light, which will be discussed further on inthe report.Sequence of events: On the evening ofAugust l, 2006, Robert was in hisbackyard along with his mother Ginaand his two daughters, enjoying the niceweather and just generally relaxing afterhaving eaten dinner. While Robertfloated on his back in his pool, hisdaughter suddenly shouted “Daddy, lookat that,” pointing up at somethingpassing close overhead in the sky. Helooked up to where she was pointing, and saw a strange object passing overhis house from the west and traveling tothe east, which was later estimated to betraveling at least 50 mph. The UFO, asdescribed above, flew over the houseand passed over their heads at a heightof what was later estimated to be onethousand feet in the air, traveling in astraight line as it passed silently over-head.After about two minutes, a secondobject appeared in the sky and followedthe path that the first craft had taken, appearing identical in every way to thefirst UFO but instead spinning end overend so that the top and bottom of theobject constantly alternated andswitched position in a fluttering motion. At this point, Robert got out of hispool and stood on a picnic table to get acloser look at the two UFOs, watchingas the second object gradually caught upto the first object until they bothsuddenly vanished, as if they were alight that someone had suddenly turnedoff. During the event, a small plane hadflown into the area and came close tothe objects before suddenly diverting hiscourse, so it is entirely possible thatthere is an additional witness to theevent that has yet to be tracked down.In addition, there is a possibleelectro-magnetic effect concerningRobert’s cell phone, which had lain openduring the sighting and had one of itslights inexplicitly short out, although thequestion remains as to why the entirecell phone itself wasn’t affected, and sothe link to the UFO sighting remainsslim at best.Other Related Events: After his UFOsighting, Robert spoke with his neighborwho lives in the house behind him, ayoung woman in her mid-20s who toldhim that, the night before his sighting, she actually witnessed a UFO fly overher house. She told him that it had beena black triangular object that had passedover her house on the night of July 31,which was the night before Robert’ssighting, but her manner in talking aboutthe sighting revealed a skeptical point ofview about UFOs. Thus, I unfortu-nately wasn’t able to reach her to askher further about the experience, and soonly have a little bit of information toput down in this report.Robert told me about a sighting thathis father-in-law had experienced inBrooklyn in 1945, when he was just 15years old. His father-in-law and hissister (Robert’s aunt-in-law) had beensitting on a stoop in Brooklyn when adisc-shaped object descended from thesky and hovered over them momen-tarily before ascending back into thesky and disappearing from view. Robertstated that his father in-law was astraight-laced, no-nonsense person whowas not prone to making things up, andwho in fact was extremely hesitant tospeak about the event, only doing soafter being relaxed with some alcohol. Itried to get Robert to speak to his fatherin-law about the possibility of aninterview, but Robert failed to followthrough, so I decided to cease myefforts and present the informationalready gathered.Another interesting aspect of thecase is that all of the witnesses involvedspoke of hearing and witnessing jetfighters taking off near their house, soclose that Robert spoke of seeinglanding gear fold up into the belly ofone jet. He told me that other peoplearound the neighborhood had alsowitnessed the take off of the jet fight-ers, and that the loud booming soundsfrom the engines had actually shakenhis house. He said he had never wit-nessed any of the jets return back totheir take-off point, and could onlysurmise that they had landed some-where else.Robert’s house is located behindthe remnants of the Grumman Aero-space Corporation, which used to beone of the leading producers of civilianand military aircraft in the 20th centuryuntil its merger with the NorthropCorporation in 1994 to form NorthropGrumman. • 7MUFON UFO JournalMay 2007Compiled from online reportsFrance became the first country toopen its files on UFOs March 22when the national space agency,CNES, unveiled a websitedocumenting more than 1,600sightings. Sources differ on whetherthese cases span 30 years or 50+years.The agency went public becausepeople were concerned about secrecyand conspiracies, says JacquesArnauld of GEIPAN, the CNES unitset up to investigate UFOs in 1977,according to New Scientist magazine.Known as OVNIs in French, UFOshave always generated intense interestalong with countless conspiracytheories about secretive governmentcover-ups.Other reports say that the aim wasto make it easier for scientists andother UFO buffs to access the datafor research. So far, the GEIPAN website(www.cnes-geipan.fr) contains just aquarter of the more than 6,000 eye-witness UFO reports sent to the unitby police over 30 years, according toNew Scientist magazine. Typically, such reports are followed up by policeand scientific and military experts.GEIPAN has debunked about 75percent of them, according to NewScientist.Although some early reportsclaimed France was releasing “secretUFO files,” in fact, no military fileshave been released, according toastronomer and UFO researcherJacques Vallee,“France does have secret UFOfiles and they are NOT available. Infact nobody knows where they are—same as in the US.“The files that are made availablenow by GEIPAN are the CNES files, mostly consisting of reports fromGendarmes, which will be very usefulto researchers, but they were neverclassified. You needed specialauthorization to see them, and it wasrarely given. Only a few cases havebeen evaluated as significant, andthose have already been published insome detail: Trans-en-Provence,L’Amaranthe, and a few others thatwill be described again in theforthcoming book by GEIPAN.”The online archives, which will beupdated as new cases are reported, include detailed cases ranging fromthe easily dismissed to the veryperplexing. The released files includepictures of possible UFOs, eyewitnessaccounts, field journals, scanned policereports and inter-governmentaldocuments on those sightings. • May 20078 MUFON UFO JournalAlthough some polls show amajority of Americans now accept anextraterrestrial explanation for someUFOs (the percentages would be evenhigher in countries where the media isless controlled), it is also true thatmany people have yet to make theleap toaccepting thatthere could bedirect contactwith thebeings inthem. Formany it isnowacceptable tothink of craftfrom otherworlds flying in the sky, but for themthe concept that they might land andattempt contact belongs strictly toHollywood. This article is NOT about“contactee” or “channeling” claimsper se. Nor do I deal with the “abduc-tion” phenomenon that sometimesseems to have also abducted Ufologyin recent years. Instead, here I discussthe next level of contact by examiningthe evidence that some extra-terres-trials may actually live among us in ourcommunities, undetected as beinganything other than our fellowhumans. Those contactees I amaware of who have claimed that thishappens are referenced. I will thenexamine what I consider is much morecredible evidence that ET is alreadyhere. The following evidence convincesme that some extraterrestrial groupshave maintained a covert presence onearth for a very long time, perhaps foras long as we have been here.Furthermore, it suggests to me thatthis presence—like UFO activityitself—has increased over the lastcentury and seems to be following agradually unfolding program ofconditioning and disclosure. Theseaccounts remind us that—like it ornot—claims of alien contact is anintegral aspect of ufology that must beconsidered. What gives weight to thiseyewitness testimony is itsconsistency. When a great range ofpeople from many places tellessentially the same thing over a longperiod of time, it is more likely to betrue. This article will be presented inthree parts. This month’s segment isabout well-known contact cases thatare possibly fabrications. Next monthI’ll discuss cases which seem morecredible. The “contactees” reconsideredFirst, I will discuss briefly thebest-known of all claims that someextraterrestrials live and work amongus on earth. To mention the names ofGeorge Adamski, Howard Menger,Albert Coe, Frank Stranges andDaniel Fry is to commit the equivalentof professional suicide in some circles.Like most researchers I have studiedwhat may be termed the “classic”contactee cases at great length overmany years. Like many researchers, Ihave usually dismissed them out ofhand as delusional and fraudulent. However, perhaps these claims havesometimes been dismissed too quickly;there may be lessons to learn fromthem.Albert Coe (1904- ) claims theearliest experience, although his bookwas not published until 1969.1,2Coewas sixteen and on a canoeing trip in1920 with a friend in the remoteOntario wilderness when he helpedrescue a young man who had slippedinto a crevasse. Coe had to assist himback to his “aircraft” parkeddownstream. Coe helped the injuredyoung man into the disc-shaped craftbefore it floated away. This initiated aseries of regular meetings that Coeclaimed lasted for more than fivedecades. As trust developed, Coeclaimed he was told that his friendposed as an engineering student whoenjoyed fishing and that from 1904onwards his group had a hundred“observers” living among us in smallteams, monitoring our atomicresearch.Howard Menger (b.1922)claimed to have had a series ofcontacts from 1932 onwards withseveral space people living among us,eventually becoming well known forhis claims. His unearthly friends wereable to pass themselves off as earthpeople in a variety of situationsincluding real-estate agents and GIs.Menger helped them with haircuts, earth clothing and food supplies. Laterhe claimed to have flown with them.3George Adamski (1891-1965)was the first person to make publicclaims of contact and remains the bestknown of all the contactees. From hisfirst meeting with aliens in 1952,Adamski claimed to have frequentmeetings with space people who couldpass themselves off as businessmen, spoke vernacular English, drove carsand claimed to live among us. Hisrendezvous with them often took placein hotel lobbies and at least oneapparent encounter took place at atheatre in Switzerland with a witnesspresent. Although his claims becameso extreme that most of his followersdeserted him, Adamski’s originalstory and photographs established akind of paradigm in contactee circlesand in the broader world of ufology.4From 1954 onwards, Daniel Fry(1908-1992) claimed to have flown inAre Extraterrestrials Already Among Us?A Review of Historical AccountsBy Warren P. He maintained telepathiccontact for some years with an entityhe called “Alan,” assisting him for fiveyears to prepare to live undetected onearth.5Frank Stranges, (b.1927) aCalifornia minister of religion, claimedthat the U.S government had a num-ber of Venusians as its guests in the1950s, the leader being “Valiant Thor.”The group was here to help us avoid ableak future. Photographs of some ofthe group, dressed in western clothing, were published in Strange’s 1967book.6Stranges remains active in thefield today.Almost unremembered today,Brazilian “Dino Kraspedon,” thepen name for Aladino Felix, told ofmeeting a human-like man fromJupiter’s moons in 1952. The manlater visited him at his home, impartingvoluminous and often—from a 2007perspective—absurd claims aboutphysics, our solar system and spacetravel. Perhaps it was not all in vain, for Felix claimed to have embracedreligion as a result of his encounter. However, he also developed a cultfollowing and was eventually con-victed of political terrorism, endingbehind bars in an asylum in 1971.7In the case of Menger, Adamskiand Fry, the original claims were nottotally unbelievable and offeredwitnesses and photographic evidenceto back them up. Menger and Fryproduced some impressive photo-graphs and movie film that lend somecredence to their claims. Some of theeyewitness testimony in particular ishard to dismiss. Multiple witnessessaid they watched Adamski’s first en-counter in the desert with “Orthon,”8while others said they saw Menger’sother-worldly friends performingamazing feats.9The same can be said of Eduard“Billy” Meier (b. 1937), whoseclaims I essentially reject. A formerCambodian diplomat recently affirmedthat she saw Meier with an apparentextraterrestrial woman and witnessedregular UFO appearances while helived in India prior to becoming wellknown.10Other witnesses swear thatthey have seen his Pleiadian shipsnear his Swiss base. Meier however,so far as I am aware, has neverclaimed that any extraterrestrials liveamong us, so is only mentioned herebecause the trajectory of his storymatches the others so well.In all but the Coe case, something changed and eventually theclaims made by each person reachedsuch a level of absurdity and farcethat the entire case was discredited.Fry produced one of the mostobviously faked films of a hoveringflying saucer. Menger flew to themoon and walked unprotected on itssurface along with “hundreds” ofother earth tourists. Adamski enjoyeda morning walk on a brisk sunny dayon Venus. Stranges visited ValiantThor’s home inside Venus. Not to beoutdone, Billy Meier flew to anotheruniverse altogether, where hephotographed blurry dinosaurs andprimitive beings and later, a poorlyconstructed small model “starship”sitting outside his compound. We see a similar pattern with amore recent contactee, EnriqueCastillo Rincon. Castillo wasbefriended by a young man outside amovie theatre in 1969 in Caracas,Venezuala, where he was working. They became friends and socialized alot in various settings. Eventually hisfriend, who claimed to be Swiss, wastransferred. Years later, Castillo wasled to make physical contact with alarge craft and found that his formerfriend was a member of the crew. Hethen claimed a series of trips insaucers piloted by Pleiadians and bybeings from Mercury and Jupiter, avisit to a secret base high in the Andeswhere other people were being taughtand a trip to an underwater alien base. But in the process, a fairly straight-forward, perhaps-believable accountspirals downwards into a quasi-religious, mystical morass of vagueprophecies and Christ-like figuresemerging from caves making ludicrousstatements.11Aside from deliberate fraud, insanity or CIA manipulations, apossible reason for this pattern amongcontactees has been suggested:deliberate disinformation from theextra-terrestrials. Dr. James Dear-dorff has theorized that introducingabsurd claims may merely be anextraterrestrial strategy to control thepace of release.12For example, at least one personhas claimed thatAdamski’s originalexperiences had been authentic, butthat he divulged something confiden-tial, obliging the extraterrestrials todiscredit him.13Perhaps this is so. Andwe should be mindful that charlatansare found, still, in ufology today. The UFO research community hasto consider the possibility that perhapssome of these contacts may have beengenuine, but that when the contactsended, human pride and ego had theneed to keep it going, to embroider andexpand? Is it conceivable that theexperiences sparking these caseswere so transforming that the recipientwas unable to return to “normal” lifeand had to perpetuate it by any meanspossible, even faked evidence? Arewe learning more about ourselves, ourpsyche and perhaps our innate cosmicloneliness than we are learning aboutextraterrestrials in these instances?Next month: Credible Cases Explored.Extraterrestrials Living Among Us?Continued from page 8References and Notes, page 10

This year’s 60thAnniver-sary UFO Festival celebration is not tobe missed! The Roswell Incident wentdormant a few days after it occurredand stayed that way for 31 years untilStanton Friedman, a nuclear physicistand the original civilian researcher, interviewed the 1947 RoswellArmyAir Field Intelligence Officer, MajorJesse Marcel. The story is so intrigu-ing that hundreds of books and docu-mentaries have been produced aboutthe Roswell Incident, and Roswell hasbecome a UFO center.Walter Haut (the Roswell AAFBase PR officer) and Glenn Dennisjoined local businessman Max Littell tofound the International UFO Museum& Research Center in 1991, whichnow draws over 150,000 visitorsannually. In 1997, for the 50thanniversarycelebration of the Roswell Incident, the population of Roswell almostdoubled with Festival attendees plusmedia from around the globe. Organiz-ers promise the 60thAnniversary willbe even bigger and better.Speakers coming for their firstRoswell appearance include fiveresearchers from Mexico, who willgive bilingual lectures. Box 720, Ravensdale,WA98022, ISBN0-937663-11-56x9 soft cover, 286 pages,$18.00.Reviewed by Dwight ConnellyInstances of UFOs appearing inconjunction with Bigfoot are rare, thebest example being the Oct. 25, 1973,case in Fayette County, PA, investi-gated by veteran researcher StanGordon. While there are no flyingsaucers in this book by Sali Sheppard-Wolford, it does include strange balls oflight—both near and far—plusnumerous encounters with what theNative Americans call Skookum. The author also tried to research areported airplane crash related to aUFO, but discovered that the news-papers describing the event had mys-teriously disappeared. Her researchalso seemingly triggered an appearanceby Men in Black. She also associated, apparently ina dream state, with another NativeAmerican, a spiritual guide she callsDream Walker, who showed herscenes from the past and providedglimpses of the future. Thus this is an account whichfeatures both the paranormal and themore “normal,” including physicaltracks left by Bigfoot and multiplesightings by former “non-believers,”including the author’s husband. The author’s daughter,Autumn, who wrote the Forward, was a smallchild during the four years described inthis book, but the events made such animpression on her that she has been aBigfoot researcher for the past 17years (www.oregonbigfoot.com).She says that there are “two typesof witnesses to this phenomenon:incidental and long-term.” Sheconcludes that her time is better spentinterviewing the long-term witnesses“who, like my family, claimed ongoingencounters near their residences.”Book ReviewIn March 2007, the websitewww.UFOPOP.org (Flying Saucers inPopular Culture) marked its secondanniversary. The purpose of UFOPOP is topreserve and display images of UFOsand Flying Saucers as presented in themedia of our “popular culture”including comic books, magazine andbook covers, advertising and products, toys and games, and more.Beginning with a thousand comicbook images, the site has grown toover 5,400 images.Over 1,300 books from 1950 to thepresent are pictured. The MagazineGallery includes images of over 1,362magazine covers, from 1915 to thepresent—yes, the MUFON UFOJournal is included.Valley of the Skookum is apersonal account of the author’s fouryears of experiences with thecreatures and the people who livealong the Carbon River in a sparselysettled area of western WashingtonState in the 1970s.Bigfoot—Skookum—comesacross as frightening, due to its size, itsstrangeness, its disgusting odor, and itshabit of showing up near dwellings. However, the author suggests that it ismore curious than dangerous. Tracks, sightings and peculiar sounds suggestit frequently observed the humanresidents in the area. The author feels she has a specialquality that enables her to relate toSkookum, although she was certainlynot the only person to see the Bigfootfamilies. She is not a NativeAmerican, but has a strong affinity forthem, and became good friends withYoudi, a Native American lady whotaught her various crafts and helpedher to understand Skookum. The Merchandising Gallery nowhas 1,600 ads, products, and promo-tional items which clearly show theextent to which UFO/Flying Saucerand alien imagery have permeated ourculture.A Toy Gallery is under construc-tion, to be followed by aMiscellaneous Gallery for those thingswhich just don’t fit elsewhere. If you are interested in UFOs,Flying Saucers, popular culture, spacecraft artwork, or just want tostroll down memory lane, visitwww.UFOPOP.org . • May 200714 MUFON UFO JournalPercePtionsPercePtionsPercePtionsPercePtionsPercePtionsBy StantonT. FriedmanStanton FriedmanMaybe I just have an aversion tosigning UFO petitions. Perhaps I amappalled by the incredible naivety andChutzpah of those circulating them. The most recent request for gatheringmillionsofsignaturescomes fromthe Exopoliticsmovementwith a “WorldUFODisclosureCampaign.”Its aim is “ToHave U.N.GeneralAssembly tohold open and secrecy-free hearingson the UFO/ET presence on Earth. And to hold open hearings onadvanced energy and propulsionsystems related to the subject that, when publicly released, will providesolutions to global environmental andother challenges.”Since when did the U.N. GeneralAssembly have any power to compeltestimony from individuals covered bynational security arrangements? Iworked under security for 14 years forseveral companies working ongovernment-sponsored classifiedresearch and development programs. There was certainly not the slightestindication that the U.N. had a role indetermining whether or not I couldreveal classified information.Has some magic event occurredthat would cause national governmentsto abandon all security? It is preciselyadvanced propulsion systems withwhich I was concerned. Surelyresearchers in the U.K., France,Russia, China, India, Israel, Pakistan,Iran, etc. have no more incentive thando U.S. researchers to releaseclassified data. The basic rule for security is thatone cannot tell one’s friends withouttelling one’s enemies. There areclearly a lot of enemies out there, orwhy else is the United States spendingroughly half a trillion dollars per yearon things military? Does it really makesense to put any technological secretswhich have been obtained from studyof UFO behavior and wreckage outwhere the Osama Bin Ladens of theworld can buy them?Yes, I certainly agree with thepetitioners that “it is a well establishedfact that UFOs are a world-widephenomenon.” For decades I havebeen demonstrating that the subject offlying saucers represents a kind ofCosmic Watergate, and indeed thatsome few people within the US andother governments know that Earth isbeing visited. I have also noted that Idid not believe new technical datashould be put out that is readilyaccessible to terrorists, petty dictatorsand other “bad guys.” If we havelearned new techniques for trackingalien invaders in our skies, should theybe shared with countries who woulduse them to detect and track ourmilitary aircraft responding to anattack? Many people seem to believe. . .I have found that many peopleseem to believe—since we havewreckage from Roswell and othercrashes of alien craft—that we havenecessarily learned out to duplicate thecraft. I have seen no evidence of that.If we have, why have we not usedthese new super special vehicles in allthe wars we have been engaged inover the last 60 years? I don’t thinkChristopher Columbus, if he had beengiven an unlimited budget and an SR71 or a nuclear submarine or a Saturn5 rocket or my home computer, couldhave built any of these in 1493 or even1893.Some people think that the reasonfor the rapid and incredibly extensivedevelopment of new technology sinceWorld War II must be the result ofback engineering UFO technology. Istrongly disagree. I think the majorreason has been the huge expendituresof money (and people) in advanced Rand D programs—many of them, atleast temporarily, black budgetprograms.People are shocked when I pointout that the General Electric AircraftNuclear Propulsion program on whichI worked from 1956-1959 had a 1958budget of $100 million. We employed3,500 people of whom 1,100 wereengineers and scientists. We also tookadvantage of government-ownedfacilities and equipment and ofgovernment-supplied enricheduranium; and, so far as I have beenable to tell, there are no nuclear-powered airplanes flying around eventhough we actually did operate jetengines on nuclear power. The annual black budget isvariously estimated at 30-50 billiondollars. The three nuclear weaponslabs employ more than 20,000 peoplein total and spend over $3 billion peryear. That is more than the totalbudget of the National ScienceFoundation. Other countries such asOn Petitions and Petitioners, and UFO Technology
    • 15MUFON UFO JournalMay 2007Friedman: Does the US Have UFO Technology?Continued from page 14Russia and China have large classifieddevelopment programs. There wasnever a time before WWII when somuch money, effort and resourceswere devoted to developing advancedmilitary and other technology. UFOscertainly might have stimulated avariety of research programs. No evidence we are using UFOtechnologyI am, of course, not saying that weand other countries haven’t learnedanything of interest from studying bothwreckage and measurements of flightcharacteristics on board satellites andaircraft chasing UFOs. I suggest someexamples in my book Top Secret/Majic. But where is there anyevidence of any sort that we havecome up with solutions—now beingcovered up—that will provide solutionsto global environment and otherchallenges??The Disclosure Project hasfrequently claimed that, in effect, thesecret of free energy has beenobtained from study of UFOs.Certainly I have seen no suchevidence. For example, if we havelearned to build and operate amagnetoaerodynamic propulsionsystem that works by ionizing the airaround a craft in the atmosphere andinteracting with that electricallyconducting fluid to create lift, drag, prevention of sonic boom production, heating, etc., without using fossil fuels, why weren’t such systems used inrecent wars? The Stealth Fighter wasdeveloped in secret at great cost…and was used in the Gulf War.Remember, it isn’t enough todetermine theoretically how advancedsystems for atmospheric flight andinterstellar travel (almost certainly twodifferent systems) might work, but thetheory must be reduced to practice. The hard part about the developmentof the atomic bomb wasn’t the theory, but obtaining plutonium and enrichinguranium. At one time the ManhattanProject was using almost 10% of theelectrical power in the United Statesto provide enriched uranium. It would, for example, be useful todevelop more efficient refrigerators, but how could people afford to replacethe old ones? The sun and wind arefree but they are not available all thetime and the converters are definitelynot free. The United States hascertainly not shown a great will tobuild more nuclear power plants toreplace burning fossil fuels in a hurry.China plans to build about thirty.Furthermore, have we really workedhard at improving the rail systems ofthe country?Perhaps I should add that I wasone of a number of scientists whopresented papers about UFOs at theGeneral Assembly of the UnitedNations in 1978. We were very wellreceived. The primary purpose asintroduced by Eric Gairy of Granadawas to have the UN establish acentral clearing house for UFOreports from all over the world. Therewas interest, but the United States putthe kibosh on that. Certainly therewere no presentations by anybody ofclassified government data from theUS or anywhere else.More helpful to release the dataI think it would be far moreproductive to push the US governmentto release all the data it has on UFOsightings that could effect NationalSecurity, but that, according to GeneralCarroll Bolender in his memo of 1969,were not part of the Blue BookSystem, but were reported under JointArmy Navy Air Force Publication 146or Air Force Manual 55-11. Howabout pushing for amnesty to allowmilitary persons who had beeninvolved in Roswell, or other eventsprior to 1950, to speak withoutpenalty? After all, the USAF haspersistently claimed that no UFOreported, evaluated or investigated bythe US Air Force gives any threat toNational Security. They have alsoclaimed that what was recovered nearRoswell in July, 1947, was not an alienspacecraft. How could they prosecuteanybody for talking about a MogulBalloon and crash test dummies?Speaking of Roswell, 60 yearsafter the event, another petition that Ididn’t sign was one distributed byAirline Pilot Kent Jeffrey a number ofyears ago after he had becomeconvinced that Roswell representedthe crash of an alien spacecraft. Ofcourse, he became disillusioned, partlybecause he had bought into the falsetestimony of the late Frank Kaufmannthat Roswell was real. Unfortunately,he pulled a bait and switch. He spokeabout Roswell, but the petition was toget the government to release any andall UFO information it had, rather thanjust about Roswell. UnderstandablyKent never had a security clearance.Again this would include any technicaldata that had been obtained. I didn’tthen and don’t now think such datashould be out there. I didn’t sign hispetition despite my strong convictionthat indeed the US governmentrecovered two crashed flying saucersin New Mexico in July, 1947, asreported in “Crash at Corona.”The exopolitical types claim intheir request for signatures that “Weshould all together concentrate ourefforts on one goal: to bring the truthabout the UFO phenomenon to light.”That sounds good. What does itmean? Who decides what is truth? Iknow that the movement people seemto have accepted every whistleblowertale that has come out.Continued on page 20

Rodriguez claimsthat this year, some lights have beenseen hovering over the new tower, remaining static and then disappearing. These lights are either white or red incolor (Note: researcher Ana Rios hasseen lights similar to those describedby Mr. Rodriguez from her apartmentin Isla Verde, and which appear to betriangular when making a turn).Rodriguez also claims to see avery large, powerful light between8:20–8:30 PM, white and triangularshaped. He compares this light to thebrightness of an airliner belonging toSan Martin Air, adding that the UFO’slight is even stronger than the lights onthis aircraft. He says that wheneverhe’s with a customer and sees thelights, he points them out and they tooare startled. When he makes inquiriesamong pilots, they always say they’veseen nothing at all. (He believesthey’ve been told not to speak for fearof dismissal). The triangular UFO impresses thewitness greatly for its size, shape andbrightness. When he realized that, atthe time that his sightings usuallyoccur, there is also a scheduledAmerican Eagle flight at 8:20 pmtoward Vieques, he decided to boardthis flight with a skeptical friend to seethe object more closely and to get hisfriend to believe him.Rodriguez says that as theAmerican Eagle flight gained altitude,it was necessary to look toward Route#3, as this is where the light appearsto emerge from, toward the beacharea. The UFO approached the planesufficiently [for him to realize] that itwas larger than the airliner. It thenmade a U-turn, heading towardFajardo, and then Vieques, as thoughheading for nearby islands. Rodriguezsays that he alerted all of the passen-gers and asked the co-pilot about thestrange light. The pilot replied [inEnglish]: “Forget about it,” which ledRodriguez to believe that the pilots areforbidden to discuss what is going on,or else did not want to alarm them.Comments: Rodriguez wants a groupof researchers to go with cameras andturn them on as soon as the passengerplane gains altitude, focusing them onRoute #3 and El Yunque in order torecord it. He added that the sameevent happened on the return trip fromVieques to San Juan.Report forwarded to MUFON by JohnSchuesslerIncident reported to: Lucy Guzman,Ovni.Net.Sources: www.andrewalvarez.net ,www.ovni.netTranslation (c) 2007, Scott Corrales, IHUhttp://www.virtuallystrange.net/ufo/sdi/program/Puerto Rican Airport Employee ReportsUFO Sighting over Control Tower

I stoppedrunning for amoment [towatch]. It wasbright and had a humming sound. Itdropped something out of it, a light ora probe-like thing. It went to theground and seemed to go underground, then the craft dimmed in light andmoved to the left very fast and made aquick turn straight up almost an instant90 degree turn. I know an airplanecannot do this. I felt like I was beingwatched, so I continued running andwent home. Was this a meteor, UFOor what? Please let me know becausea lot of people around here are seeingthings but they are too embarrassed toadmit it. Thanks to MUFON CMSMassachusetts Trees Lit UpGreenWILLIAMSTOWN—The reporterstates: “I was hunting coyotes at 6:00AM on April 13, 2007, when I glancedto my left and saw a bright whiteobject hovering halfway up themountain. Five minutes later it movedleft slowly and then took off, fasterthan anything I have ever seen.” Aweek later he saw something again. He said he turned away and lookedback and it was still there, hoveringjust to the left of the Taconic trail andthe “trees lit up green.” He watchedto see if it would take off again but itnever did. “It was unnerving this time.I could tell it was red and green lightsblinking. With my binoculars, I couldsee the lights but couldn’t see theshape.” Thanks to ChristopherMontgomery, Editor-in-Chief http://uforc.com/Michigan CylinderPattie Donahue writes, “Mydaughter and I observed a whitetubular/cigar-shaped object on manydifferent dates, times, and locations. Iwould be outside, when I would getthe very clear familiar feeling/thoughtto “Look Up,” and there would be awhite tubular cigar-shaped object justsitting there in the sky. It wouldalways be no more than maybe 3-4stories above me. The first few timesit would just sit there for ten seconds, then just vanish, disappear. I never hadtime to run in and get my camera.Other times, I would look up, it wouldbe just sitting there, suddenly startmoving, then vanish into thin air.”Minnesota One Triangle and theOther CrossEDEN PRAIRIE—My friend and Iwere driving almost to Apple Valley onHighway 77, around 8:30 pm, onApril8, 2007, and we looked up and sawlights. The three lights on the cornersof this UFO looked like a plane at first, but when we got closer it was a weirdtriangle and one by one they turned onwith multicolored lights in the middle. The first object was hovering in onespot and was pretty low to the groundtoo, maybe five hundred feet abovethe trees! We kept driving and I couldsee it was still there. Then we sawanother object in the shape of a crosswith a glowing light on each end. Itlooked like a big box was on top of it,and it had two weird flashing lightswith abnormally large white lights onthe ends of the cross. This object was also hovering anddid not move from the spot it was in!When we passed by I looked back andI saw both of the objects still in thesame place above the highway. At8:45 PM, near our destination I couldsee two really bright lights with a thirdobject coming towards us. So therewas a total of three craft. We arrivedat our friends house but they had notseen anything. After three hours wedrove back on the same highway andsaw three bright blue objects indifferent parts of the sky. According to Heavens-Abovesatellite and space station schedulesthere was only one iridium flarescheduled for the evening. One of theships fired a beam which lit up anobject near the handle of the BigDipper causing it to disappear. Therewere what looked like two military jetswhich vectored in on the same area onthe same course of two of the largerUFOs. One of the ships powered upjust in front of the jet and there is noway the pilot could have missed it.Most of this was caught on film, all butthe beam due to not showing up in theview finder. We are still working onthe technology and expertise tocapture the footage and send it out onthe net. I would suggest going out overthe next few days and watch thehandle of the Big Dipper for your ownpersonal experience. Something verystrange is unfolding there. Thanks toJames Gilliland www.eceti.orgTexas Three Lights in TriangularShapeSLOCUM—About 130 Miles east-southeast of Dallas, the witness wasoutside “star gazing” and saw a brightlight towards the southwest on April11, 2007, at 5:10 AM. The light wentout and then three lights appeared in atriangular configuration. The threelights were followed by a red light (attimes). The light configuration (object)moved erratically side to side andmade a few circles. The witnessheard no sound and observed theobject for about 5 minutes. The objectthen shot off rapidly to the south anddisappeared. Jupiter was visible in thesouthwest at the time of sighting.Investigator’s Notes: The witnesswas quite excited by what he saw. Hesaid that he routinely looks at the skywhen he gets up in the morning. He atonce noticed the bright light. I don’tthink that the sighting was the result ofJupiter given what the witnessreported. Given available information Ihave no explanation of what thewitness saw. As it flew nearer I sawone bright white light. It turned leftand remained in one position for about15 minutes. I woke up my wife towitness this peculiar object. We bothcould clearly see a flying saucer withthree beams of light emitting from itsbase. My 11-year-old daughter alsowoke up, and saw the object swingingleft, then right. It zoomed up with itslight fading above the clouds. It flewback to its original position, and stayedglued till 6 AM when it again shotupwards above the clouds.GRIMSBY, Ontario—I was drivinghome from Grimsby on Thursday orFriday evening March 29 or 30, 2007,when I chanced to glance to the northof the QEW Highway and saw ametallic floating object about fivemeters above a house by the lake. Itwas not what I expected, as it lookedlike a rotating metal fly strip. It wasjust sitting there bigger than the houseit was rotating above. Then it lookedlike the sun was shining off it and itwas gone.MEXICO: Cross shaped UFOvideotapedTEPEXPAN—On Good Friday,April 6,Mr. Victor Gabriel Gonzalez managedto record the transit of severalunidentified flying objects. Severalspheres crossed the sky at twoo’clock in the afternoon, headingsouth. Later a large cross-shapedobject approached and slowed butincreased its glow, before headingtoward the sun, where it was lost fromsight. • May 200720 MUFON UFO JournalTheir willingness to accepteverything—without evidence—isbased on the strange notion that, because the government is all-powerful and is covering up UFOs, itwould, of course, cover up allsubstantiation of educational and otherrecords for people like Robert Lazarand the late Michael Wolf whosupposedly had six degrees in Physics,Law, Medicine, ad nauseum. Theirclaims are definitely phony. Kind ofamazing that neither could providecopies of any of the eight diplomasthey supposedly have between them. The legal counsel at MIT assured methat it is not possible to wipe out allrecords of an individual who had adegree from there. Furthermore MITdoesn’t admit people from high schoolwho finished in the bottom third oftheir class and had only one sciencecourse, as was the case for Lazar. The physicist he claimed wouldremember him from CaliforniaInstitute of Technology never taughtFriedman: On Petitioners, UFO TechnologyContinued from page 15there, but only at Pierce JuniorCollege, near LA where Bob wasindeed in one of his courses at thesame time when he was supposedly atMIT 2,500 miles away! MajorBarnes. This got my attention becausethe USAF has no such rank.ASgt. Majoris grade E-9 in the U.S. Army. The article also mentions an episodeof the 1977-78 NBC program about AirForce Blue Book investigations. Thecorrect name of the program wasProject UFO, not Project Blue Book.James E. Delehanty, USAF (Ret.)Jeffersonville, IndianaAuthor Steve Reichmuth responds toMr. Delehanty’s comments.Thank you to Mr. Delehanty,USAF (Ret.) for kindly pointing outthese issues. I wish to express somedisappointment and concern that cer-tain points of my article as edited mayhave created some confusion. The correct title of the 1970s tele-vision series that highlighted theShrum case in one series episode wasindeed called Project UFO, notProject Blue Book.We have checked our sourcesand the rank of Sergeant Major inthe article was an error, as this is arank used in the U.S. Army. There isa Master Sergeant E7 that is equiva-lent to a Sergeant Major. The AirForce official that interviewed theShrums was a sergeant. Incidentally,Judy Shrum’s father was a SeniorMaster Sergeant in the USAF.Two more corrections:The date of the Donald Shrumexperience in the Journal is incorrect.Donald Shrum’s experience occurredon September 4-5, 1964. In the his-tory of this case, the actual date wasquestioned and clarified early on.The Journal also states the Shrumfamily never met personally withNICAP/later MUFON Chief Investiga-tor Paul Cerny. [In fact, they] nevermet personally with [Investigator]Richard Hall, but the Shrum familywere in personal contact with the latePaul Cerny many times. They had de-veloped a close trust. Mr. Cerny’s in-volvement should be praised in hisobjectivity, attention to detail, and thegreat amount of time over his life thathe devoted to this particular case, important in the history of ufology.Respectfully, Steven ReichmuthSSD- MUFON - Northern CaliforniaLetter to the EditorAllow your work to live on. . .Please remember MUFON in yourwill.Inadditiontomonetarybequests, you can also donate your UFO casefiles, books, periodicals, etc.Don’tletyour valuable research end up at aflea market or estate sale. Please contact MUFON HQ at 970-221-1836formoreinformation.LeaveaLegacyto MUFON

The airstrips have longsince been overgrown with vegetation, preventing their usage even if theGrumman headquarters was still active. The initial take off point of the jetfighters remains a mystery, as doestheir purpose and ultimate destination, and so one can only theorize that thereare hidden airstrips somewhere that areenabling the jets to take off in the area. Conclusions: After speaking to thewitnesses and analyzing the informa-tion, I feel that this is an authentic UFOcase, as no conventional explanationcould be reached regarding the identityof the two objects. Any kind of knownmeteorological phenomena can besafely ruled out, as the objects did notremain stationary in the sky but flew ina straight path over the house of themain witness. Any explanation ofmeteors or comets can be discounted,as the reported UFOs bore no resem-blance to either of those naturalphenomena, and there was no “tail”reported as would be expected from ameteor. It is highly unlikely that the objectswere any conventional aircraft due tothe descriptions that were given.Thereis the possibility that the two UFOswere blimps of some kind, but it wouldprobably be safe to rule it out. Whilethere is always the possibility of a hoaxor delusion, all of the witnessesappeared to be psychologically stableand honest. If it was a hoax beingplayed on them, then it would be one ofimmense complexity, and isn’t verylikely. As far as any possible additionalwitnesses, I phoned Republic Airportand inquired about any reported UFOsightings, receiving a negative, andcalled the Bethpage Police Departmentand received the same answer fromthem, so the identity of the pilot in theprivate plane remains a mystery, asdoes the identities of anyone else whomight have also witnessed the objects.Field Report—BethpageContinued from page 6
