    2. ok
    3. vive le feu
    4. !
    5. for our unilingual audience members ...
    6. Feu! Fire!
    7. you get it
    8. I really like this punk band from France, Bérurier Noir
    9. They are named after a Frederic Dard character
    10. I'm quite litterate but that specific tidbit
    11. I found it on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%A9rurier_Noir (with funky URL character escaping included for free)
    12. Choosing music to support my presentation
    13. is something I started doing at BarCamp MTL a while ago
    14. It's a really neat concept !
    15. It's a really neat concept ! (plan backup slide)
    16. It's a really neat concept ! (plan backup slide) (in case it does not work)

    19. It's a really neat concept ! (plan backup slide) (in case it does not work) (or technical problems) (make sure you look relax) (even if the whole concept is fscked)
    20. It's a really neat concept ! (plan backup slide) (in case it does not work) (or technical problems) (make sure you look relax) (even if the whole concept is fscked) just ask candidly : who invited Murphy?
    21. I had a few other alternatives
    22. for my Fire theme
    23. We didn't start the fire
    24. By Billy Joel
    25. But then, that's a signer my father listened to
    26. and it's the opposite
    27. of what I want to share this morning
    28. ( yeah I know )
    29. It's the title of my talk on the program
    30. But do you know how many weeks in advance you have to provide your title to these hard working conference organizers?
    31. And then you have to work these slides
    32. Like waaaaaaay before the conference
    33. So when I did my slides
    34. Last night
    35. I changed my mind
    36. Man, is this guy ever going to start his presentation?
    37. And you know, tell us the actual subject matter? (thinks the guy in the last row)
    38. And you know, tell us the actual subject matter? (thinks the guy in the last row)
    39. But there was... Light my fire by the Doors Fire a classic cover from RHCP Ring of Fire a Cash Classic The Roof is on Fire

    45. burn mother fucker, burn!
    46. ok
    47. Startups!
    48. That's my subject!
    49. Startups!
    50. burn mother fucker, burn!
    51. Startups!
    52. Sigh, it's like, about time! (thinks the guy in the last row)
    53. Sigh, it's like, about time! (thinks the cute girl in the second row)
    54. so there's this myth
    55. about startups
    56. being an AMERICAN thing
    57. being an AMERICAN thing (American BadAss)
    58. Nope
    59. Well, maybe a bit.
    60. Can you name at least 5 tech/internet canadian startups from recent years?
    61. Hum, was that easy?
    62. So time for change
    63. And YOU are part of the answer
    64. There's 10 reasons why we can kick some serious ass
    65. I am going to give you
    66. 5 of these today
    67. because I want you to come to BarCamp Canada happening right here in Montreal in May for the 5 other
    68. But first a story
    69. mine
    70. that way I can tell it like I see it
    71. sure you could fact check [needs citation]
    72. sure you could fact check [ citation needed ]
    73. but since I am not wikipedia material (yet) I'm clear
    74. man I <3 xkcd !
    75. another one!
    76. ok a short story
    77. grew up in suburbia
    78. my father was part of the first generation of computer programers
    79. you know when all you could get was either green on black or amber on black
    80. you know when all you could get was either green on black or amber on black
    81. you know when all you could get was either green on black or amber on black
    82. you know when all you could get was either green on black or amber on black
    83. you know when all you could get was either green on black or amber on black
    84. my first babysitter was an Atari 2600
    85. my first babysitter was an Atari 2600
    86. and a few others similar devices for a few years
    87. Then I decided that I would not be a nerd
    88. Flunked badly
    89. Did stupid things
    90. (this would become a pattern)
    91. (for a few years)
    92. Then I decided I should do something serious about school
    93. At least something I liked
    94. But I could not let my inner geek come out
    95. Nerds weren't cool then
    96. Went to study in some Humanities program, somewhere
    97. Flunked badly
    98. Did stupid things
    99. (told you it was a pattern)
    100. Decided to let some passion come back to my life
    101. Went on to study Language and Litterature
    102. liked it
    103. did good things
    104. (I hoped to break the old pattern)
    105. took some more good decisions
    106. I was really starting to like this
    107. Decided that... what the heck, I'm a nerd, I like computers, I like language, I like philosophy, I like sociology, I hate chemistry but I love physics, I like communication, I kind of like this girl in my théâtre Québécois class, I like Radio, I like programming, I like music, I love skateboarding, I like they way these Doc Martens make me look badass, I think I am onto something!
    108. No more boring things!
    109. No more doing stupid things!
    110. (this would become a pattern)
    111. Key Insight :
    112. Save yourself a couple of bad years and do what you like, now!
    113. Passion
    114. FIRE!
    115. FIRE!
    116. FIRE!
    117. Tabarnak, y'étais temps! (thinks the guy in the last row)
    118. Tabarnak, y'étais temps! (de s'exclamer le gars à gauche, là, au fond)
    119. Key Insight :
    120. Save yourself a few minutes and get to the point of your friggin presentation, now!
    121. Key Insight (another one) :
    122. Decide for yourself what you want to do with your life, now!
    123. (well, you can always change your mind later, you're young, remember)
    124. So without further divagations and detours (well maybe some) here's the top 5 reasons you might want to start your own business
    125. grasshoper
    126. BTW, I always saw myself as the young student, but even if keep wearing these Doc Martens like when I was 19 and Nirvana was all the rage, you can't stop time! I guess it's ok to be the older wise guy, well, sometimes (I can so predict grey hairs soon)
    127. ok
    128. so here are the top 5 reasons
    129. why you should go for startup
    130. in a somewhat concise manner
    131. (well)
    132. (well) (coming from a guy)
    133. (well) (coming from a guy) (that needed 140 slides)
    134. (well) (coming from a guy) (that needed 140 slides) (before getting)
    135. (well) (coming from a guy) (that needed 140 slides) (before getting) (to the crux of his thesis)
    136. (well) (coming from a guy) (that needed 140 slides) (before getting) (to the crux of his thesis) (you might take it)
    137. (well) (coming from a guy) (that needed 140 slides) (before getting) (to the crux of his thesis) (you might take it) (with a grain of salt)
    138. #5
    139. This is a new era
    140. It's much easier than before
    141. Cheaper
    142. Faster
    143. (fail fast!)
    144. More information
    145. (more on that later)

    147. Good timing (for a few years)
    148. #4
    149. You have nothing to lose
    150. I mean, it's the best time
    151. Being naïve is great
    152. You get to disregard all the serious reasons why your idea is crazy (worst case you will learn a lot of useful life lessons)
    153. #3
    154. The world is smaller, the village is global
    155. Thanks Marshall
    156. Another awesome Canadian!
    157. There is no secret cabal Read blogs. Join mailing lists. Books. Heck even movies available on this series of tubes could help. Questions, answers and contacts are just a few hyperlinks away
    158. #2
    159. Canada is extremely welcoming for the world and the world for canadians
    160. Learn from that. Great immigration laws is a definitive bonus for Canada. Affordable Universities too. The world is your neighbour, quite litteraly. Share. Listen. Understand. Give. Receive.
    161. (ok, so that was my hippie slide)

    177. But I digress
    178. (yet again)
    179. #5

    185. or someone with past experience with boring but important stuff
    186. #4
    187. Trust your gut
    188. Yeah, I know.
    189. This is not a touchy-feely thing

    191. #3
    192. Learn from others
    193. Take this seriously, but then again, remember

    195. #2
    196. Project yourself be yourself
    197. Deciding what and whom you want to be, sure helps to becoming just that

    208. I think I'm done
    209. well almost
