2. Thesis Statement
Eating disorders are much more than just being on a diet.
An eating disorder is an illness that affects all aspects of a
person’s life, and can be caused by many different emotional
factors and different influences. It has effects not only on
the people suffering from the disorder but loved ones,
friends and family members as well. There are different
types of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia
nervosa, compulsive overeating, and binge eating disorder.
3. Personal Relevance
This topic of eating disorders is important to
me, as well as something I can relate to
because some of my best friends have
struggled from eating disorders. Dealing
with this, it has made me want to be more
educated and be more aware of what exactly
eating disorders are, the differences between
them and how we can help people struggling
and raise the awareness of eating disorders
to everyone!

24. Do’s/Don’ts for trying to help
someone with an eating disorder
Don’t....
be judgmental
threaten or bribe to get better
think its “just a phase”
try to solve the problem yourself
be afraid to speak up
Do
speak to the person in private
tell them what you’ve seen that concerns you
listen
have resources that they can refer to
understand each person is different and will react
differently
25. My Application
• I helped to plan and hold an ANAD
Candlelight Vigil through Delta Phi
Epsilon’s sorority, where we had
inspirational music, poetry, recovery
stories, and accepted donations and
raised money to go to ANAD.
• It was held on Monday, March 1st
2010 to kick off Eating Disorders
27. The ANAD Pledge
I will accept myself as I am.
My uniqueness is a badge of honor, something to be proud of. There is no one in the world quite like me and I will strive to develop my special
skills and abilities.
I will accept others as they are.
Each person is special and different. I will to try to learn from these differences rather than be critical of them.
I will support diversity and freedom of expression in
the way people think, look and live.
There is no single standard of “rightness,” rather we live in a world of individuals, each of whom provides a different answer. Through our
differences humanity continues to evolve.
I will not tolerate physical or mental abuse.
There is NEVER a reason for people to hurt other people and I will do my utmost to prevent such abuse. We are all equal and deserve the same
thoughtful consideration.
I will actively work to change media programming and advertising
that exploits or demeans the human body.
Setting standards of physical “perfection” is harmful to everybody. The media needs to understand that real human beauty lies in our differences,
not our similarities.
I will work to improve the lives of individuals, communities
and the environment.
As a responsible member of society, I understand that the more good I do for the people and places around me, the better off everyone will be.
We need to think not only of today, but of tomorrow and our children’s future.
I will support good health through proper nutrition, regular
exercise and adequate sleep.
Good health enables us to achieve success in life— at work, at home and in our
personal relationships.
29. WHY WE SUPPORT ANAD
Because...
it’s one of the most underfunded causes in
the U.S.
an estimated 8-10 million suffer for eating
disorders
one-in-four female adolescents display
symptoms of eating disorders
30. The bottom line!
Eating disorders: Anorexia, Bulimia, Overeating, as
well as Binge eating are horrible illnesses and can
cause many long term effects on a person suffering
from them. As illnesses they are deadly and not only
effect the person but their loved ones as well. We, as a
society need to wake up and see that real beauty is all
around us and are in regular people not just
supermodels. We all need to be aware that people with
eating disorders are all around us and we need to help
when we can and support a positive body image for
everyone!
Editor's Notes
What are eating disorders?
It is much more than just a diet, it is an illness that impacts all aspects of a persons life that it effects and is usually caused by a variety of emotional factors and influences and has many effects on the people suffering and their loved ones as well.
Different types of eating disorders
There are 4 different types of eating disorders:
Anorexia-which is when people starve themselves
Bulimia -which is usually inappropriate methods of weight control. It can be things like vomiting, fasting, use of enemas, laxatives, and diuretics, and even compulsive exercising
Overeating- The excessive consumption of food, often thousands of calories at a time and people with compulsive overeating have what can be characterized as an “addiction to food”
Binge Eating- usually characterized by a loss of control over eating behavior and the consumption of excess amounts of food within a short period of time
People with eating disorders:
Girl that suffers from anorexia
Girl from THIN- feeding tube
What causes eating disorders?
Interpersonal factors- troubled family and relationships, history of being teased, physical and or sexual abuse
Social- cultural pressures, obtaining “the perfect body”
Biological factors- eating disorders often run in families
Some physical signs and symptoms are extreme weight loss, thin appearance, fatigue, dizziness or fainting, brittle nails, constipation, dry skin, intolerance of cold, and low blood pressure. Also emotionally, things like refusing to eat, denial of hunger, excessive exercise, lack of emotion, difficulty concentrating, and preoccupation with food.
It can be treated by seeking medical treatment, nutritional therapy, medication, and hospitalization
Harmful effects of anorexia, it effects your whole body. Point out a few points on the chart of how it effects you, and to the right a picture of a kidney infected with kidney stones and bruised skin, since your skin bruises easily when anorexic.
Some physical signs and symptoms are abnormal bowel functions, damaged teeth, sores in throat and mouth, fatigue, dehydration, dry skin, and menstrual irregularity or loss of menstruation.
Emotional symptoms are constant dieting, eating until point of discomfort, exercising for hours, and going to bathroom after eating or during meals.
It can be treated by seeking medical attention, psychotherapy, medications, nutritional therapy, and hospitalization
Some harmful effects of Bulimia..
Harmful effects picture, and to the right healthy liver and cirrhosis liver which can happen when someone is bulimic. On the bottom, a picture of tooth decay, it happens from stomach acid, from throwing up when someone has bulimia
Some symptoms are difficulty in maintaining healthy weight, not being able to control eating, prefers to eat along because they are ashamed, tries to lose weight by popular diets. Men and Women who suffer from this disorder are at high risk for high blood pressure and cholesterol, kidney failure, arthritis, bone deterioration, stroke and most especially heart attack.
To treat this you must also treat underlying psychological issues, treat with support group, physician, eating plan, seeing a psychiatrist or psychologist.
Some signs and symptoms of binge eating are: Inability to stop eating or control what you’re eating, Rapidly eating large amounts of food, Eating even when you’re full, Hiding or stockpiling food to eat later in secret, Eating normally around others, but gorging when you’re alone, Eating continuously throughout the day, with no planned mealtimes.
It is important to seek professional support and treatment. Such as psychiatrists, nutritionists, therapists, and eating disorder and obesity specialists.
Pictures of people overweight- overeating, and binge eating, large portions for hours no set meal times.
obsessed with healthy eating is “orthorexia nervosa,” and literally means “fixation on righteous eating.”
starts out as an innocent attempt to eat more healthfully, and becomes fixated on food quality and purity.
They become more and more consumed with what and how much to eat. Every day is a day to
eat right, be ‘good,’ rise above and self-punish if temptation wins (usually stricter eating,
fasts and exercise).
Self-esteem becomes wrapped up in the purity of their diet and they often feel superior to others,
especially in regards to food intake.
Eventually, the obsession with healthy eating can crowd out other activities and interests, and in turn do things like impair relationships, and become physically dangerous.
Eventually food choices become so restrictive, especially when “punishing ones self” that both variety and calories end up lacking and therefore, that persons health suffers.
– this is ironic that this is what it turns into because this is usually a person so completely dedicated to healthy eating and living, they end up doing the opposite of how it initially started.
Although more women suffer from eating disorders than men, they do as well. Men can also be self conscious of their body image just like women.
Most men feel it would be embarrassing to talk about what they don’t like when it comes to their bodies, “its too unmanly.”
Girls want to be skinny while boys want to be smaller and have more muscle. They’ll do things like spend hours at the gym or working out and sometimes they take illegal substances to bulk up.
Male suffering from anorexia and a self conscious male.
The average US resident is exposed to approximately 5,000 advertising messages a day
According to a recent survey of adolescent girls, their main source of information about women’s health
issues comes from the media
Researchers estimate that 60% of Caucasian middle school girls read at least one fashion magazine regularly
Another study of mass media magazines discovered that women’s magazines had 10.5 times more
advertisements and articles promoting weight loss than men’s magazines did
A study of one teen adolescent magazine over the course of 20 years found that in articles about fitness or
exercise plans, 74% cited “to become more attractive” as a reason to start exercising and 51% noted the
need to lose weight or burn calories
The average young adolescent watches 3-4 hours of TV per day- giving more chance to be influenced by commercials and tv shows
A study of 4,294 network television commercials revealed that 1 out of every 3.8 commercials send some
sort of “attractiveness message,” telling viewers what is or is not attractive
These researchers estimate that the average adolescent sees over 5,260 “attractiveness messages” per year.
Barbie is a huge part of the media and society as it is and has been a very popular kids toy for a very long time.
people grow up looking at Barbie, thinking they should look like this...
THIS IS NOT REAL
If Barbie were a real person....
she would be 6' 0", weigh 100 lbs., and wear a size 4. Her measurements would be 39"/19"/33". and would probably have had to have back surgery from being so top heavy.
The average woman is 5' 4", weighs 145 lbs., and wears between a size 11-14. Her measurements are approximately 36"/30"/41".
After spending her childhood playing with Barbie, watching models and actresses who stand 5' 11" and weight 117 lbs. this is now the idea of the perfect body.
these quotes are some that i found on the ANAD website about Anorexia Nervosa and associated disorders that make you somewhat see in the minds of people suffering with eating disorders. when it comes to attitude, body image, competition and perfectionism
Positive body image campaigns
Dove has done an excellent job with their “Real beauty campaign” and these are just some of the real beauty images that prove that real women and people are beautiful too.
Help someone today. Do’s and Do’nts!
Each year the more than 100 collegiate chapters of Delta Phi Epsilon host ANAD candlelight vigils.
In addition other groups and organizations also host candle light vigils around the country.
Candle light vigils are a means to support those who are fighting for recovery from eating disorders, to memorialize those who lost the fight against eating disorders, and to raise awareness about eating disorders.
Candle light vigils are held not only during eating disorders awareness week, but throughout the year.
at the candlelight vigil we had we were able to raise over $300.00 to send to ANAD where the money will be used for rehabilitation centers as well as, for people in need of rehabilitation and this way they can receive the help they need
with such a large turnout this was the reason we were able to raise this money, through the donations that were made as well as the pledge cards that we sold to “support a positive body image for everyone” as well as raising this much money through the turnout we were also able to raise awareness
Because fighting anorexia nervosa and associated eating disorders in one of the most under funded causes in the United States.Because between an estimated 8-10 million suffer for eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa.Because it is estimated one-in-four female adolescents display symptoms of eating disorders sometime during their teen years.Because eating disorders can kill!
