Task 4 (suggested answer) Industrial chemistry is beginning to create less pollution, as a result of a growing interest in ‘green’ chemistry. For example, many products, such as shoes and soap, are now made using cleaner manufacturing processes. This interest in preventing pollution began in the mid-90s, when two US chemists pointed out it was better to prevent waste, rather than having to clean up after manufacturing processes. This insight, in turn, led to demands for renewable source materials, fewer harmful solvents and more effective use of energy. 2
