1. Fourth Grade Used
Book Fair
We had a discussion as a class of different ways that we could do a community service
project for our school. The fourth graders decided that they would like to be able to
purchase school supplies for students in need. As an authentic learning project, the
students will ask for donations for used books. Then we will have a used book fair to
raise money to purchase school supplies. The fourth grade students will not know who
the supplies are given to. That will remain anonymous.

4. Learning Outcomes with
Instructional Procedures
1- Students will learn how to make an advertisement on smore.com. The
advertisement will ask for donations for used books. The advertisement must
include that the used books will be used for a book fair. The advertisement
will list the date of the upcoming book fair. It must also include that all
proceeds from the book fair will be used to purchase school supplies for
children in need.
2- The created advertisements will be e-mailed to all parents in the Faulkton
School District. A list of parent e-mails will be divided evenly between all
fourth graders. The fourth graders will e-mail their advertisement to the
parents on the list that they have been given by the teacher.
3- Each student will also be required to hang one printed advertisement
around town to promote this event. Examples of good places to hang the
printed ads would be: grocery store, church, drug store, post office, quilt
store, hair salon, court house, museum, etc. A class discussion will take place
on where they plan to put their advertisement so that all advertisements are
in different places.
5. Learning Outcomes/Instructional
Procedures (Continued)
4- All donated books will be collected in a box in the fourth grade classroom. After the donating period, the
books will be entered on Microsoft Excel.
5- While the teacher has Microsoft Excel pulled up on her computer and Promethean board, the students
will also have Microsoft Excel pulled up on a computer. This is so students learn to use the program. This is
their first experience with this type of computer program. The teacher will enter each donated book into
Microsoft Excel. The students will do the same. As a class, we will decide on a price to sell each book for.
That way each student has a list of the books for sale and the price of each.
6- When students have free time in the next week, they can go to the book box and put the appropriate
price on the book with a piece of masking tape. All students will have book prices on their excel document.
7-After all books are priced, the teacher will pull up Microsoft Word on the computer and Promethean
board and the class will decide on a work schedule for the upcoming book fair.
8- At the book fair, students will collect money for the books and be able to make change if needed.
9- As books are sold, students will mark that on the class Excel document compiled on the teacher’s
computer.
10- Totals of the book fair earnings will be tallied.
11- The class will decide as a whole what supplies would be most beneficial to donate, and then the teacher
will go and purchase the supplies for the students in need. The supplies will be purchased in town so that the
fourth graders are supporting a local business.
6. Authentic Learning –
This project is authentic because the students in fourth
grade recognized a need in our community and decided to
do something to help. It involves many different standards
across many different curriculum areas. The teacher is a
guide on the side in this project. The work is done
primarily by students. The project is meaningful and
useful. This assignment is a real world task because they
are learning valuable lessons.
7. Designing and Communicating
This authentic learning assignment has students both designing and
communicating.
They are using designing when they are creating their smore
advertisement. They need to design a flyer that is appealing to the
eye, but also a flyer that gives all the needed information. Students
will also be designing a Power Point final reflection to present to the
class.
They are using communication skills with their classmates as they work
together to decide on making an inventory of the books, deciding on
prices for the books, deciding on a schedule that works for all class
members, etc. Most importantly they are using their communication
skills when they are working in the book fair. Adults from the
community will be allowed to shop at this book fair, so it is also an
opportunity for students to communicate with adults.
8. Final Assignment/Reflection
In groups of three, chosen by the teacher, students will develop a PowerPoint
presentation reflecting on this authentic learning project. The PowerPoint
must contain five slides of your choice, reflecting on the learning project.
Some ideas for slides are as follows:
1- What did you learn from this project?
2- How did it feel to be able to purchase school supplies for somebody in
need?
3- Isn’t it nice to help somebody and not even know who you are helping
because the gifts were given anonymously? Describe how that felt for you?
4- What do you think we could do differently with this project?
5- Are there any other community service projects we as a class could
participate in?
6- Any other information you learned from this activity?
