Tom's First p3 project

  1. 1. RHINO/ELEPHANT POACHING BY TOM BODDINGTON
  2. 2. What I already know about poaching. I know that a lot of people are trying to stop rhino and elephant poaching. I also know that because of poaching Rhinos are nearly extinct and elephants numbers are also going down. I know that although laws are issued and poaching is trying to be stopped people keep poaching rhinos and elephants and then they sell their horns and tusks for a lot of money. I know that Rhino Horns are made from Keratin (the same protein that makes up your fingernails and hair) People then grind these up and consume them believing that they have healing powers. I also know that ivory from a elephants tusk sell for a high price.
  3. 3. What I want to learn 1. How many organizations are trying to stop Rhino and Elephant poaching? 2. How many Rhinos and Elephants are killed every year? Every day? 3. How many Black Rhino’s are left in the world? 4. How many White Rhino’s are left in the world? 5. What is the difference between Black and White rhino’s? 6. Where do the Rhino’s left in Africa live now? 7. How many Elephants are left in Africa? 8. Where do the Elephants left in Africa live? 9. How did this dramatic decrease happen?
  4. 4. How many organizations are trying to stop poaching? ◦ When searched on google it will come up with 2,260,000 results. At least ¾ of these results have something to do rhino or elephant poaching in Africa. Most of these organizations just show pictures and articles of the horrible stuff that is happening. There are quite a few websites that tell you some information and pictures and then ask you to donate to the cause of helping to stop Rhino and Elephant poaching in Africa. These are some of the armed organizations that try to catch poachers.
  5. 5. How many Rhinos/Elephants are killed every day? every year? EACH DAY EACH YEAR Rhinos: At least 2 rhino’s are being killed every day to meet the surging demands, Rhinos horns have become more popular than Gold, Platinum and Cocaine because of their “healing power”. Rhinos: At least 333 Rhino’s were killed in 2010. And in 2012 around 388 rhinos had already been killed. The count for 2013 is 688 deaths and that was with 3 months still left in the year. Elephants: It is estimated that every day even after the international ivory ban poachers are still killing nearly 100 elephants a day Elephants: People believe that in 2012 at least 35,000 elephants were killed for there ivory. Because of the ivory trade elephants population used to be 1.3 million now there are 500,000 to 700,000 left in the world!
  6. 6. What is the difference between a Black and White Rhino BLACK RHINO A Black Rhino is smaller than a White Rhino height wise and can be between 4.5-5.5 feet tall at the shoulder. It is also smaller than the White Rhino length wise being 10-12.5 feet long. It is once again smaller than the White Rhino size wise weighing between 1,770 LBS to 3,000 LBS. One way to tell them apart is by their mouths the Black Rhinos mouth is more of a triangle because the Black Rhino is a browser and it eats from bushes and trees instead of grass on the ground. In the end the Black rhino is much smaller than the white Rhino. WHITE RHINO A White Rhino is bigger than a Black Rhino height wise and can grow between 5-6 feet at the shoulder. The White Rhino is also bigger length wise sometimes being between 12-15 feet long. The White Rhino weighs a lot more than the Black Rhino mostly being between 4,000 LBS to 6,000 LBS. One way to tell apart the White Rhino from the Black Rhino is by its mouth, the white rhinos mouth is square because The White Rhino is a grazer and it eats from the ground not off of a bush. In the end the White Rhino is much bigger than the Black Rhino.
  7. 7. How many Black Rhinos are left in the world? White Rhinos? BLACK RHINO’S? WHITE RHINO’S? An estimated 4,848 Black Rhinos are left alive in the world today. And still many are killed every day so the population still decreases. An estimated 20,000 White Rhinos are left alive in the world today. The same with White Rhinos many are killed every day and the population decreases by a lot.
  8. 8. How many Rhino’s are left in Africa? The world? In a count at the beginning of the 20th century there was an estimated 20,460 left in Africa in the wilds and in captivity (mostly captivity). Another count shows that today there are less than 29,000 rhinos left in the world. This last count includes the Black Rhino, the white rhino, the greater one horned rhino, the Sumatran rhino and the javan rhino. In Africa The World
  9. 9. Where do rhinos live in Africa now? Yellow is where Rhinos used to live. Red is where Rhinos live now.
  10. 10. How many Elephants are left in Africa? The world? In Africa there is an approximate count and they think that there are between 470,000600,000 individuals left in Africa. In the world there is an estimate of 630,000-650,000 this estimate includes African elephants and Asian elephants but this is because of the decreases in population due to poaching, the elephants population are dropping by 4 in one hour.
  11. 11. Where do Elephants in Africa live? The green spots are where elephants live today. Elephants used to live all over Africa.
  12. 12. How did this happen? As most of you may know if you have watched this presentation, this dramatic decrease of population has happened because of poaching because of the believed “healing powers” of the ivory and the “medical value” for it because of its “healing powers” and even after rules were made and enforced Rhino and Elephant poaching still continues today and it looks like rhinos are going to go extinct with elephant going extinct soon afterward, we just have to hope that the hunters can be stopped before these beautiful animals become extinct. Because of poachers.

  14. 14. Self reflection I think I did quite well on this project. I learned how many rhinos and elephants are killed every day and month and even year, I learned where elephants and rhinos live today and where they lived in the past but not today anymore. I learnt how this happened and how many organizations are trying to help stop poaching from happening. I have also learned a lot about the poaching being illegal but people still doing it and killing rhinos and elephants. I learned about all the people hiding in the bushes to protect rhinos and elephants and stop the poachers!
