    Paralympics2 - Presentation Transcript

    1. In 2010, we will be holding the Winter Olympics right here in Vancouver. After the Olympics, there will be Paralympics being held in March 12th to 21st, which is exactly ten days. In the Paralympics, there are only five events that will be performed by the athletes. The events include Cross Country Skiing, Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Wheelchair Curling, and Ice Sledge Hockey. Our estimation shows that there will be over 1100 athletes competing in 2010 Paralympics.
    2. •Opening Ceremonies held in Vancouver in B.C. Stadium. •B.C. Stadium is the largest air-supported dome in the world. •Ice sledge hockey held at University of British Columbia (UBC) – 12 km away from Vancouver Village. •Wheel chair curling held at Hillcrest/Nat Bailey Stadium Park – 3.7 km away from Vancouver Village.
    3. •Closing Ceremonies are held at the new Whistler Celebration Site. •Events – Alpine skiing, Biathlon, and Cross Country Skiing. •Alpine skiing – held at Whistler Mountain – 4.1 km away from the Olympic Village. •Cross Country skiing and Biathlon – held at Callaghan Valley – 15 km away from the Olympic Village. •There are five Paralympics events in total.
    4. The Opening Ceremony will be held at Vancouver  City centre in BC Stadium. The capacity of BC Stadium is 55 000.  The new Whistler Celebration Site will be where the  Closing Ceremony of the Paralympics are going to be held. 8000 is the capacity of the new Whistler  Celebration Site. On March 12th, that is when the Opening Ceremony  is happening. Closing Ceremony is on March 21st. 
    5. The Paralympics Alpine Skiing was developed  after the end of World War II because there were people who wanted to enjoy skiing but it was impossible with a disability. The first ever ski course for Paralympics was built  in 1948. Slalom and giant Slalom was first invented in  1976 in Ornskoldsvik at the Winter Paralympics. In 1998, at Nagano Winter Paralympics, the  Mono-Ski was added to become a medal event. Alpine Skiing includes Slalom, giant Slalom,  Downhill, Super-G, and Super Combined.
    6. In 1998, Paralympics Biathlon was first  introduced in Innsbruck, Austria. The rules and the equipment for the shooting  has changed considerably a lot in 2002. The Paralympics and Olympic Biathlon are  pretty similar but when shooting, the athletes are in prone position. This sport is carefully governed by the  International Paralympic Committee. The events in the Biathlon includes standing,  sitting, and visually impaired athletes.
    7. • Cross Country Skiing for Paralympics was included in the first ever Winter Paralympics in 1976, at Ornskoldsvik. • Free techniques was first added in 1992, before that, the athletes only used the classical techniques. • Classical techniques, uses a longer skies than free techniques. • Just like Biathlon, athletes are categorized in three different categories for their disabilities. • Athletes start every race by giving the athletes ahead of them 30 seconds. • To judge the places for the athletes of this race, some percentage is added to their times, and the lowest times are the athletes who gets the medals.
    8.  Wheelchair Curling hasn’t been around as much as the other sports. It was first introduced in Torino in 2006, in the  Winter Paralympics. The first Wheelchair Curling world championship  was held in Switzerland in 2002. Two teams at a time play against each other taking  turns, and pushing the heavy stone down to the ring of circles. The focus of this sport is to get the stone close to the  middle circle as possible.
    9.  In the early 1960s, in Sweden, Ice Sledge Hockey was invented in a rehabilitation centre when a group of athletes decided that they wanted to continue hockey, the sports they loved.  However it wasn’t until 1994, that the Ice Sledge Hockey was debuted to the Paralympics events, in Lillehammer.  The rules of Ice Sledge Hockey follows the same as the International Ice Hockey Federation with a small bit of different rules that are necessary.  When playing Ice Sledge Hockey, athletes sit on a steel sledge with two blades underneath so that the athletes can move on the ice.  The athletes grip one double ended stick to move around with and a hockey stick to move the pucks with.
    10.  There are 1350 Paralympic athletes and team officials.  650 Paralympic competitors in 2010 Winter Paralympics.  In the Paralympics there are more than 40 countries participating.  There are 60 medal events for the Paralympics.  About 55 athletes are from Canada.  The official deadline of all the Paralympic athletes that are competing is by January 2010.
    11. This slideshow was all about the Paralympics in 2010 Winter Olympics. We have made this this presentation to show you what are going to happen in the 2010 Paralympics, and we would like to see you here to watch all these events. Even though, there are only five events that are happening, these events mean a great deal to these athletes who have been training for years to compete in the sports that they love. These athletes hasn’t given up the hope that even if they are disabled, it doesn’t mean that they can’t do what other people can. So, we hope you understand how much this means to us and the athletes, and come and watch these events up close, and cheer on the athletes. We hope you have enjoyed this slideshow and we greatly hope to see you here in Vancouver in 2010.
