Some equipment used by chemical oceanographers

  1. 1. Some Equipment used by Chemical Oceanographers
  2. 2. Water Sampling Niskin and Nansen bottles – Close on both ends at a particular depth – Close using a “messenger” (usually a brass weight controlled by a person)
  3. 3. Water Sampling Rosette – Holds a collection of water bottles – Close using an electronic “messenger” (usually controlled from on a ship) – Advantage: allows water collecting at many different depths
  4. 4. Temperature Thermometer -measures how much heat is in the sample
  5. 5. Density Hydrometer -floats in sample -measures density, which can be converted to salinity at a particular temperature
  6. 6. Salinity Refractometer – Measures how much light bends – Look through one end, place water sample on other end to measure salinity
  7. 7. Other Parameters CTD – Conductivity, temperature, depth – Measures electrical current running through water – Converts that charge to a measure of salinity
  8. 8. Other Parameters cont. Secchi disk – Measures cloudiness (turbidity) of the water
  9. 9. Other Parameters cont. DO Meter – Measures Dissolved Oxygen in water
  10. 10. Other Parameters cont. SONAR – Uses sound waves to search for objects in the ocean
  11. 11. Other Parameters cont. Side Scan SONAR – Uses a wider band of sound waves to get a 3-D image of the bottom and objects under the boat
