  2. 2. In Security Applications, What Are Whole Body Imagers? <ul><li>Whole Body Imagers are systems that are used for People Screening. They *image people as they pass through a controlled checkpoint, to determine if they are concealing contraband items under their clothing. </li></ul>(*Technology that senses “sees” through clothing)

Contraband Material? <ul><li>Contraband Categories: </li></ul><ul><li>Life Safety – Prohibition of weapons or other threat items that could be used in a life threatening manner, cause destruction of property or loss of life. </li></ul><ul><li>Criminal Substances, Drugs – Class A Narcotics, other illegal or proscribed substances. </li></ul><ul><li>Contraband Goods – Smuggled items whose movement is controlled. Examples - Currency or negotiable instruments, diamonds, pearls. </li></ul><ul><li>Contraband Items – Any item that may be prohibited by the controlling authority. Examples - Cell phones, recording devices, cameras, etc… </li></ul><ul><li>Loss Prevention Goods – Items that have been stolen. </li></ul><ul><li>Espionage Intellectual Property – Theft of Proprietary Knowledge/IP Government or Commercial. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Why and When is People Screening employed? What is really happening is a vetting process. The basic premise is that an authority wants to control what is coming in or going out. Persons are asked to pass through a checkpoint where they must divest, remove all items from their person and present for inspection. The technology ensures compliance that ALL items are revealed. TSA – Ensure that weapons or items that could be used as weapons or in a destructive manner are not brought into airside sterile area. Loss Prevention – Ensure that items of value do not leave a facility or warehouse. Court Security Officers – Ensure that weapons and other unauthorized or nuisance item are not brought into a court room. Example Cell Phone – Nuisance if it rings in court, Cameras and Cell Phone cameras – Unauthorized photography of litigants and witnesses. Uniformed Enforcement (Customs, Police, Corrections) – Body packers of Drugs, Contraband Material or Large Amounts of Cash.

What do you mean sense through the clothing? <ul><li>Walk Through and Hand-Held Metal Detectors use magnetic fields to sense through the clothing if there are metallic objects present on a person. The presence of a metallic object changes the field and the system senses that change. </li></ul><ul><li>Whole Body Imagers use various methods to sense or “see” through the clothing, and create an image of the person and any objects that might be concealed. </li></ul><ul><li>Metal Detectors sense only metal. Whole Body Imagers sense a broader and therefore more complete range of objects. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Create an Image? Use fields or various methods? Backscatter X-Ray – Systems that operate by sensing energy in the X-Ray portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. These are active systems but as opposed to traditional medical x-ray systems the energy is low power and the energy does not penetrate the subject but senses the energy that comes back from the target. Terahertz – Systems that operate by sensing energy in the Terahertz portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. I am only aware of a Passive commercially available system. Millimeter Wave - Systems that operate by sensing energy in the Millimeter Wavelength portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. There are both Active and Passive systems commercially available. Whole Body Imagers Passive System – A system that produces images by sensing the ambient environmental energy. Our eyes are passive devices and so are CCTV cameras. External sources of illumination produce the light that is then reflected back into the device. The device transmits no energy as illumination for the target. Active Systems – Systems that transmit energy as illumination for the target. Energy that is reflected back and captured and used by the device to produce the image.

  8. 8. Passive? Just Looking at what? Where Does Millimeter Wave Energy Come From? Short Version - All matter in the universe emits electromagnetic energy (Radio Waves). The properties of these emissions vary with the Temperature Density and the Molecular composition of the matter. Passive Millimeter Wave systems look at the world and sees the Millimeter Wave energy emitted by people. Thermal Imagers as we’ve seen on TV Cop shows, “sees” the world at night just as clearly as during the day. They look at the world and see the IR, Infra-Red energy emitted by objects and especially people.

This system senses energy in the Millimeter Wave area of the spectrum and produces a grayscale image. Humans appear as Hot (brighter pixels) compared to the Colder (darker pixels) of the background.
