    in the town of Palo in
     Leyte province, Philippines.

    Archdiocese in 1982.

    established on February 6, 1579
    as a suffragan to the See of Mexico.
    When Manila was elevated

    Pope Clement VIII, Cebu was created
    as a suffragan diocese on
    August 14, 1595

    it was elevated to a
    metropolitan
    archdiocese with the
    Most Rev. Gabriel M. Reyes 
    was its first archbishop.

    one of the oldest dioceses in the country.
     It was created a diocese by virtue of a papal bull of Pope Pius IX on May 27, 1865, according to a document signed by Archbishop Gregorio Martinez, then Archbishop of Manila, under whole ecclesiastical province the new diocese belonged as suffragan.
  • 43. The Archdiocese has ninety-one (91) parishes, eighty-five of which are under the direction of the diocesan clergy, and six (6) under the direction of the religious priests.
  • 44. It has a land area of 5,324.0 square kilometres, representing 1.8 percent of the total land area of the country.
    In 2009, the report of the government shows that it has a total population of 2,333,141.
