Some Pitfalls of Nontraditional Students
Some of the common pitfalls of nontraditional students.
Each of these pitfalls are a surefire roadblock to your success in college and makes your life as a nontraditional student that much harder.
They are:
***Trying to Do Everything Yourself
***Trying to Do Everything You've always Done
***Trying to Do Things the Old Way
Trying to Do Everything Yourself
Where do you find time to attend classes, read your assignments, study for exams, do research, and write papers? Before college your life was full with your spouse, kids, and home responsibilities, right? So, where does the time come from?
I've known students who only lasted a semester or two before they realized that they just didn't "have the time" to further their education. One problem was that they spent that time doing things they should have passed on to someone else to handle.
Trying to Do Everything You've always Done
If you are used to watching 4 hours of TV after dinner and want to continue that behavior then, sorry, you're simply not going to make it through college. There are going to be some activities that will have to go completely and some that simply need to be modified to accommodate the life of a nontraditional student.
Trying to Do Things the Old Way
The main thing I want to get across is that being a nontraditional student requires that changes be made in your lifestyle. Furthermore, a failure to make those changes will affect your success in college.

  • Some Pitfalls of Nontraditional Students
  • I want to share with you some of the common pitfalls of nontraditional students. One reason is because I've known many people who struggled with college and didn't know why they just couldn't seem to get a grip on things. Too, I believe that recognizing these pitfalls is the first step in avoiding them.
  • Perhaps you're struggling and you're not quite sure why. If so, then see if you can locate yourself in one of the descriptions below. Each of these pitfalls is a surefire roadblock to your success in college and makes your life as a nontraditional student that much harder. Overcome them, on the other hand, and life will be much easier.
  • These are all related to your home time management and they are:***Trying to Do Everything Yourself***Trying to Do Everything You've always Done***Trying to Do Things the Old WayI believe every one of these is a very common problem and that overcoming them is crucial to your success in college so let's take a more in-depth look at each of these.
  • Trying to Do Everything YourselfWhere do you find time to attend classes, read your assignments, study for exams, do research, and write papers? Before college your life was full with your spouse, kids, and home responsibilities, right? So, where does the time come from?
  • As you likely have already guessed... or are in the process of guessing... continuing to try to do everything yourself is a guaranteed path to failure.
  • I've known students who only lasted a semester or two before they realized that they just didn't "have the time" to further their education. In reality, they had the same amount of time as the rest of us. One problem was that they spent that time doing things they should have passed on to someone else to handle.
  • Trying to Do Everything You've always DoneThis is another common problem. If you are used to watching 4 hours of TV after dinner and want to continue that behavior then, sorry, you're simply not going to make it through college. There are going to be some activities that will have to go completely and some that simply need to be modified to accommodate the life of a nontraditional student.
  • Trying to Do Things the Old WayThe old way of doing things... most of the time... is not the most time-efficient. If you do not learn to do those things you need to do in new, time-saving ways, then you're making your life much harder.
  • The main thing I want to get across is that being a nontraditional student requires that changes be made in your lifestyle. Furthermore, a failure to make those changes will affect your success in college.
