How Home Time Management Can Make College Easier
There are 3 major ways that good home time management can make life easier as a nontraditional student. It will:
***Help You Find Time to Study
***Help You Focus Better on Studying
***Ease Any Potential Guilty Feelings
Help You Find Time to Study
You have the time… you're just spending it on other tasks. Every time you spend too much time on any of those tasks you're responsible for… cooking, cleaning, or laundry… you're taking time away from time you could have spent studying.
How home time management can help is by streamlining those tasks so that they're done in as little time as possible. You can then reinvest that time into studying.
Help You Focus Better on Studying
Many students have trouble concentrating if the house is messy. Other things are:
***Putting off deciding what's for dinner… it really nags at your brain all day
***Feeling like you don't have time for your child's soccer practice… and feeling like a horrible mom
***Knowing you should be doing housework or laundry… and feeling like a slob
How home time management can help is because you'll have planned… on the weekend… what's for dinner each night. And, you'll have done laundry as you were cooking, thereby utilizing that otherwise wasted time.
Ease Any Potential Guilty Feelings
Nontraditional students feel guilty for studying when they feel like they should be doing something else: cooking, cleaning, or spending time with spouse or kids. There's always guilt. If we're not studying we know we should be. If we are studying we feel we're neglecting something important.
How home time management can help is because when you really make an effort to manage your time you make time for what's important.

  • How Home Time Management Can Make College Easier
  • Many nontraditional students are looking for that magic bullet that will make college easier. Well, I'm here to tell you, it doesn't exist. What does exist, however, is home time management, and it is as close to a magic bullet as you will ever get. What I'm talking about is doing what you need to do… cooking, cleaning, and laundry… in a more efficient manner than ever before so as to have time for the things you want to do… spending time with kids or having enough time to study.
  • There are 3 major ways that good home time management can make life easier as a nontraditional student. It will:***Help You Find Time to Study***Help You Focus Better on Studying***Ease Any Potential Guilty FeelingsLet's look at each of these a little more in-depth.
  • Help You Find Time to StudyNot having the time to study is one of the biggest complaints I hear. But (and you really need to understand this) you have the time… you're just spending it on other tasks. Every time you spend too much time on any of those tasks you're responsible for… cooking, cleaning, or laundry… you're taking time away from time you could have spent studying.
  • Help You Find Time to StudyHow home time management can help is by streamlining those tasks so that they're done in as little time as possible and without sacrificing quality, of course. You can then reinvest that time into studying. For example, if you spend 1 hour each night cooking and cleaning up afterwards then having leftovers 2 or 3 nights a week will free up 2 or 3 hours you can then devote to studying.
  • Help You Find Time to StudyAnother example is that by getting your kids to do their own laundry you can free up even more time. Even young kids (4-7 years old) can help fold and put up clothes. By the age of 8, they should be doing their own from start to finish.
  • Help You Focus Better on StudyingMany students have trouble concentrating if the house is messy. Other things that can adversely affect the ability to concentrate include, but are certainly not limited to:***Putting off deciding what's for dinner… it really nags at your brain all day***Feeling like you don't have time for your child's soccer practice… and feeling like a horrible mom***Knowing you should be doing housework or laundry… and feeling like a slob
  • Help You Focus Better on StudyingHow home time management can help is because you'll have planned… on the weekend… what's for dinner each night. You'll have taken into account, and planned meals around… and planned studying during… soccer practice. And, you'll have done laundry as you were cooking, thereby utilizing that otherwise wasted time.
  • Ease Any Potential Guilty FeelingsNontraditional students feel guilty for studying when they feel like they should be doing something else: cooking, cleaning, or spending time with spouse or kids. Yet, at least those can be justified as things that still need to be done. But, try to justify kicking back on the beach for a few hours, soaking in a hot tub, or lounging on the couch with a good book… just because you want to.
  • Ease Any Potential Guilty FeelingsThere's always guilt. If we're not studying we know we should be. If we are studying we feel we're neglecting something important.
  • Ease Any Potential Guilty FeelingsHow home time management can help is because when you really make an effort to manage your time you make time for what's important… whatever that is. You'll learn to cook quick (still healthy) meals, to speed clean, and to make the most of the reduced time with your kids. You'll also learn to make time for yourself by clearing, and then really appreciating, small chunks of time.
