Cullen University Strives for Excellence in Technology
Agenda What is a Star Chart? Key Areas of the STaR Chart STaR Chart Assessment Ratings Cullen’s STaR Chart Summary Conclusions
What is a STaR Chart? The STaR Chart is the Texas School Technology and Readiness Chart. It can assist in the measurement of the impact of state and local efforts to improve student learning through the use of technology as specified in No Child Left Behind, Title II, Part D
Key areas of the star chart The four key areas of the STaR Chart are: Teaching and Learning Educator Preparation and Development Leadership, Administration and Instructional Support Infrastructure for Technology Each key area has 6 categories to be rated.
Star chart assessment ratings The key areas are rated and then classified into four proficiency levels. They are: Early Tech Developing Tech Advanced Tech Target Tech
Early tech At this level instruction is teacher-centered and students occasionally use software applications. No technology integration occurs in the foundation subject area TEKS.
Developing Tech At this level instruction is teacher-directed and students regularly use technology on an individual basis to access electronic information and develop communication and presentation projects.
Advanced Tech At this level instruction is teacher-facilitated and students work with peers and experts to evaluate information, analyze data and content in order to problem solve.
Target tech At this level the teacher serves as the facilitator, mentor, and co-learner. Students have on-demand access to all appropriate technologies to complete activities that have been seamlessly integrated into all core content areas.
Data Analysis Cullen was rated Advanced Tech for the years 2006-2007 and 2007-2008. In 2008-2009 our classification dropped to Developing Tech.
What can we do to boost our rating? Incorporate technology into our daily lessons. Create technology related professional developments. Encourage all staff members to become technology savvy.
Conclusions The STaR Chart data can be very useful to schools and their districts. The survey yields results that can be used for technology planning, resource budgeting, and applying for technology grants. The STaR Chart is like our technology report card. We should try to improve each year until we reach and maintain the Target Tech level.
