LOTE Language Streams at YVG <ul><li>There are many excellent reasons </li></ul><ul><li>why you should continue your </li></ul><ul><li>LOTE study at Yarra in your </li></ul><ul><li>senior years. </li></ul><ul><li>In the Senior College three </li></ul><ul><li>languages streams are offered: </li></ul><ul><li>French </li></ul><ul><li>Indonesian </li></ul><ul><li>Japanese </li></ul><ul><li>Some students with a background </li></ul><ul><li>in an alternative language can </li></ul><ul><li>elect to study by distance </li></ul><ul><li>education through the Victorian </li></ul><ul><li>School of Languages. </li></ul>

Continuing with LOTE <ul><li>You should consider continuing </li></ul><ul><li>with your LOTE if you are </li></ul><ul><li>interested in any of the following: </li></ul><ul><li>Developing your language skills </li></ul><ul><li>Maximising your ENTER score </li></ul><ul><li>Travelling overseas </li></ul><ul><li>Working internationally or for an international company </li></ul><ul><li>Going on exchange or University study overseas </li></ul><ul><li>Getting to know people from other countries and their cultures </li></ul>

Developing your language <ul><li>Do you enjoy your language study? </li></ul><ul><li>Are you interested in learning how languages work? </li></ul><ul><li>Are prepared to consistently put in effort and work hard? </li></ul><ul><li>Do you usually obtain a C+ or better for your Assessment tasks? </li></ul><ul><li>If yes, than you should continue! </li></ul>

Maximising your ENTER score <ul><li>To encourage students to keep up their languages at Year 12, a boost is given to the LOTE study scores. </li></ul><ul><li>A raw score in French is typically given an increase of 11 or 12 for the scaled score. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Eg. A student who achieves a raw score of 33 will receive a scaled score of 44 / 45. A significant boost! </li></ul></ul><ul><li>In Indonesian the scores are usually scaled up by 7/ 8 and in Japanese the scale up is </li></ul><ul><li>Having a LOTE study score often assist students to reach the 90s for their ENTER score. </li></ul>

Traveling overseas <ul><li>Travelling is so much more fun when you can communicate with the locals. </li></ul><ul><li>French is spoken widely in Europe, Africa and the Carribean but also can be found in Canada and parts of Asia. </li></ul><ul><li>Indonesian will assist you in Malaysia as well as Indonesia. </li></ul><ul><li>Japan remains a popular tourist destination for many Australians. </li></ul>

Working Overseas or For an International Company <ul><li>Interested in diversifying your career? </li></ul><ul><li>It is estimated that more than I million Australians currently work overseas. </li></ul><ul><li>You will have much better success in obtaining employment o/s if you can communicate to some degree in their language. </li></ul><ul><li>Employers are always impressed by students who have had the discipline to study a language at school. </li></ul><ul><li>The world economy is going to be driven by the economies of Asian countries in the next half century. </li></ul><ul><li>Asia is where the money and work will be in the future! </li></ul>

Going On Exchange or Study Overseas <ul><li>Exchange programs are available at Yarra for all 3 languages. </li></ul><ul><li>Year 10 and 11 French students have the opportunity to stay in Bordeaux for 3 weeks with students from the Lycée le Mirail. </li></ul><ul><li>Year 9 and 10 students are able to take advantage of our sister school on Hiroshima in Japan. </li></ul><ul><li>The Malaysian Study Tour is available to students undertaking Indonesian in Years 10 and 11. </li></ul><ul><li>Many universities also offer students the opportunity to complete part of their degree at an overseas destination. </li></ul>

Getting to Know Different People And Their Cultures <ul><li>An important part of language learning is meeting other people from different countries and becoming familiar with their culture. </li></ul><ul><li>Its fun to learn about food, clothing, shopping, music, entertainment, transport etc in other parts of the world. </li></ul><ul><li>With technology like email and the internet, it is easy to communicate with penfriends and share experiences on Skype, MSN, Facebook and Youtube. </li></ul><ul><li>Understanding other people, their ideas, values and way of life leads to greater friendship and tolerance. </li></ul>
