Nien the Monster Long ago there was a legand that said that a fierce monster called Nien lived in China Every night before Chinese New Year he would creep into the villagers houses and eat them. There lived an old wise man in a village. He thought because the people paniced the monster ate them. The old man asked people to come together and frighten the monster by beating drums, burning bamboo, and lighting fireworks to make loud noises to keep it away. When he told people about the idea, everybody agreed.
o On a freezing cold night, the monster, Nien, came again. When he opened hismouth the frightning noises started. Nien was forced to stay away because of the terrible noises. The monster didn’t stop running until he fell down with tiredness. Then people jumped up and killed the monster. And that was the end of the Chinese monster.
