    • 2. Geography and climate • The country is the fourth largest in the world in total area, and the third largest in land area. In the east, the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, there are densely populated plains. The area of the South China Sea is more mountainous and southern China are small hills and ridges. The two largest rivers are the Yellow and the Yangzi. Other major rivers include the Pearl River, Mekong, Brahmaputra, the Amur, the Huai He and Xi Jiang. In the west, the Himalayas, and the biggest mountain is Mount Everest. There are also deserts and the Takla -Makan and the Gobi.
