  • 1. The Global Partnership Initiative for Plant Breeding Capacity Building An internationally facilitated global platform dedicated to enhancing plant breeding capacity in support of crop production intensification, food security and sustainable development
  • 2. G B m bership IP em a n d purpos es  a global platform and partnership of public, private and civil society organizations working in concert to enhance plant breeding capacity in support to crop production intensification, food security and sustainable development  better plant breeding and effective delivery systems
  • 3. n d implem e nt G B IP  the implementation of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture  results of an FAO Survey for Assessment of Plant Breeding and related Biotechnology Capacity (PBBC) in developing countries
  • 4. n d opport ies unit ass essm e nt  “The objective of this survey is to develop a plant breeding country profile to provide decision makers with the means to strengthen national programme capacity to respond to needs and priorities on sustainable use of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (PGRFA)”
  • 5. W can w say about capacit needs ov hat e y erall?  poor recognition by policy-makers and institutions of the key role of improved crops, breeding and adequate planting materials and the need for continuing support  salaries and support are inadequate, affecting morale and retention  inadequate operational support for core infrastructure and breeding activities  poor communication among scientists and limited access to new information and technology  private sector participation in the seed system usually minimal

  • 7. G B product IP s  platform open to all stakeholders involved in sustainable use of PGRFA, combining the complementary facilitation role of FAO in connecting with other partners  distribution list with over 6,000 people working on PGRFA, plant breeding and seed sector  Knowledge Resource Center - a gateway for a wide array of Plant Breeding links, data, information, tools, training courses, and degree training courses  plant breeding capacity survey in developing countries and related database online  plant breeders trained in pre-breeding skills through face- to-face and e-learning  capacity building providers database  decision support tool on international policies on plant genetic resources
  • 8. GBIP s erv i ces  national political awareness, understanding and policy that reflect commitment for plant breeding capacity building  enabling prioritization of constraints and opportunities for formulating strategies for national and regional plant breeding capacity building  support education and training in plant breeding activities  countries using the information to formulate strategies for plant breeding capacity building  grants system to enhance sustainable use of plant genetic resources
  • 9. G B facilit ed plat IP at form A successful st eholders consult ion process ak at  two task forces held both electronically and as face-to- face meetings gathered more than 150 participants  Task Force 1 discussed propositions and recommendations for longer-term strategies, outputs, outcomes and priority activities to be pursued by GIPB  the consolidated recommendations from Task Force 1 were used as starting point for TF2, that recommended strategies for: a) the implementation of the 5 GIPB objectives in the period 2009-2013, and b) the organization and management of GIPB  the recommendations of the Task Forces 1 and 2 have served as basis for the preparation of the Business Plan for the initial phase of GIPB, from 2009 to 2013

  • 19. G B capacit building process IP y  the training courses in pre-breeding were very successful and in high demand. GIPB supported four face-to-face courses:  IRRI (The Philippines), 2007, 46 scientists from 16 countries  IPBO, University of Ghent (Belgium), 2007, 2 students from Africa  Kasetsart University (Thailand), 2008, 45 participants from 14 countries  PROCITROPICOS (Venezuela), 2008, 41 students attending  the level of need, compared to the available resources, motivated GIPB to look at alternative training possibilities. Partnering with Bioversity, GIPB is planning an e-learning course that will reach thousands of students
