    • WELCOME to your first day in Fifth Grade! 5P 2009-2010
    • Opening Questions
      • What are you looking forward to?
      • What are you NOT looking forward to?
      • Am I in the right room?
      • What are the rules in this classroom?
      • What will I be doing this year?
      • How will I be graded?
      • Who is the teacher as a person?
      • Will you treat me as a human being?
    • Mr. Puttmann
      • I’ve been teaching since 1995!
      • I have a Master’s Degree
      • I have taught 5th grade for 14 years.
      • I love “teaching”, all sports, hunting, camping, and generally anything that deals with the great outdoors.
      • I have two other brothers…one of which is my twin brother. My brothers names are Todd and Shawn (my twin).
      • My parents (Gary and Kay) live in Sioux Center.
    • Mr. Puttmann’s Family
      • My wife, Kristen, is a 2 nd grade teacher at Orange City Elementary. She loves to read and spend time with our kids and friends.
      • My daughter, Kaylee, is 11 and in the 6 th grade. She is daddy’s little girl who is nice and considerate to everyone she meets.
      • My son, Kyle, is 10 and in 4th grade. He is a little shy at times and likes to play with his buddies.
      This is Ty… our Dog.
    • Starting the Day
      • 7:50 Breakfast is served
        • Note: KIDS THAT RIDE THE BUS MUST HUSTLE TO GET TO BREAKFAST. I EXPECT YOU TO CHECK IN WITH ME BEFORE YOU GO TO EAT AND I EXPECT YOU TO BE BACK IN THIS ROOM BY 8:20.
      • 8:00 Classroom opens
        • I may be in the room preparing for class, but please give me the time alone I need to do just that. I love to see your BEAUTIFUL faces, but not until 8:00.
      • 8:10 Attendance taken and class begins
        • You will be counted tardy if you are not in the classroom when the bell rings at 8:10. BE ON TIME and be prepared to have a GOOD day! 
      • 8:28 Prepare to switch classes
      • 8:30 5P goes to Mrs. T.G.’s room for Reading and Language Arts until recess at 10:30.
    • Your Desk
      • What to keep in desk:
      • Things you need all the time…
      • paper, pencil, notebooks, reading binder, school books, etc.
      • What not to keep in desk:
      • Corrected papers (take them home!) ALL PAPERS THAT ARE TO GO HOME BELONG IN YOUR SEAT SACK.
      • TOYS…Do not belong in or around your desk…they are just a distraction to you and your neighbors.
      • Other people will be sitting at your desk.
      • *PLEASE KEEP YOUR DESK NEAT AND ORGANIZED. 
      • Put valuable items toward the back
      • or don’t leave them in your desk at all.
    • Lockers
      • Please keep your locker neat and organized. RESPECT THOSE YOU SHARE A LOCKER WITH!!!!
      • You may hang pictures INSIDE, using magnets, but not on the outside. You may hang pictures in your locker, but NO inappropriate pictures, please! *If you have any doubt or question about a picture…it is better to ask!
    • Our Classroom
      • Floor:
        • Must be clean before any of us leave for the day.
        • Chairs up ready for the vacuum cleaner each day except Wednesday.
        • Anything left on the floor may just disappear .
      • Desks:
        • Keep them neat and organized and every Wednesday they must be clear for cleaning.
        • From time to time, a desk fairy does come around and rewards those that abide by the clean rule.
      • Supplies:
        • If you need something, BORROW it from
        • Mr. Puttmann and then WRITE YOURSELF A REMINDER NOTE stating what it is that you need.
        • You may also ask to email your parent(s) of a need.
    • Mr. Puttmann’s Stuff
      • My desk is off limits. You are not allowed to be at or near it without permission and please do NOT spend any time gazing at any papers I may have laying on it.
      • When borrowing from me…PLEASE ASK PERMISSION!!!!
      • My locker is off limits, except when there is something you need out of it…but make sure you ask to use it.

          • Yes, you HAVE to go out OUR recess doors-NOT the Kindergarten doors.
    • Bathroom
      • You are FIFTH graders. Please use the bathroom at the designated times:
        • BEFORE the 8:10 bell rings.
        • BEFORE you go out for recess.
        • BEFORE lining up for lunch
        • BEFORE we line up for Music/PE/Art/Library
        • Sign Out for the Restroom…During our working time, NOT WHEN I AM TEACHING IN FRONT OF THE CLASS , you may sign out to go to the restroom. One Girl and One Boy at a time.
      • If you have an emergency …Try to signal me…I will most likely let you go. 
    • Telling Time
      • Recess 10:30
      • Lunch 12:05.
      • Leave 3:10 and 3:13
      • Mrs. T.G. and I both know how to tell time. 
    • Schedule
      • Please post your 6 Day Cycle Schedule somewhere at home or in your planner where you and your parents can check it and then dress appropriately for the day’s activities.
      • If you forget your tennis shoes on PE days, you MUST use your recess time to get an extra pair from Mrs. K’s stash of shoes prior to Music/PE.
        • There is an award system she is going to be using for each class this year. She will fill you in during class.
    • STUDY HALL TIME
      • As you can see from our schedule, we DON’T have a “Study Hall” scheduled. However, if you use the classroom time wisely!!!!!...you should NOT have a problem in finishing you homework. During working times…the room MUST be quiet!  IF you find yourself with any free time, please use it to READ, WRITE, or STUDY!
    • BIRTHDAYS
      • You may bring treats. Make sure you bring enough for everyone.
      • We’ll PLAN on our summer birthdays being celebrated on HALF b-days. Please notify Mr. Puttmann at least a day ahead of time.
      • We’ll do a 15 minute birthday game time SOME-time during the week. ??????
    • Holidays
      • You will be placed on a committee: Halloween, Christmas, and Valentines. Your group will be responsible for the treats, games, etc.
    • Grades
      • For Math
        • Homework 40% of Grade
        • TESTS/Quizzes 60% of Grade
        • Corrections…Half Point back for each correction
        • Redo’s…You can earn 100% of your points back
      • For Science
        • Homework 40% of Grade
        • TESTS/Quizzes 60% of Grade
        • Projects…Part of Homework Grade
      • For Social Studies
        • Homework 40% of Grade
        • TESTS/Quizzes 60% of Grade
        • Map Skills…Separate Grade
      • For Reading and English
        • ASK Mrs. T.G.! 
    • END OF THE DAY
      • 3:05
        • Fill in your Student Planner and get homework and papers that need correcting into your book bags, desk clean, chair up (except on Wednesdays). Make sure you have an AR book to read. Also, remember, no one leaves until our floor is tidy.
      • 3:10
        • Town kids dismissed. Go directly home. Do NOT cut around or through the buses.
      • 3: 13
        • Bus kids will walk out. I’ll walk with you as far as I feel necessary for you to remember to walk, hopefully that won’t be all the way to your seat on the bus. 
    • QUESTIONS
      • A dumb question is much easier to handle than a dumb mistake.
      • Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
      • If you never ASK the QUESTION, “You will never KNOW the ANSWER!!!”
