The Lecture John Smith got tired of watching people die, so he became strict, and said that’’ no one will eat unless they work to stay alive instead of working for the riches! The settlers weren’t used to working because they were rich and had maids. So they did not get food and they traded with the Powahaton. John Smith had to leave. Breads were corn bread and dried bread. They also ate corn, beans, squash cooked in clay pots. Jamestown cash crops were tobacco and hemp. Crops that didn’t work were grapes and blueberries.
