Life Cycle of a Chicken
The chicken starts its life cycle as an egg that is fertilised in the chicken’s body. The eggs are laid one at a time. The embryo develops into a chick inside the egg shell. The egg yolk provides food while the egg white provides water and nutrients for the developing embryo .The hen sits on the eggs to provide then with warmth at 40 o c for three weeks or twenty-one days until they hatch. The chick looks like the adult and will take three months to develop into an adult. The female adult chicken is called a hen and the male adult chicken is called a cockerel.
Stages in its Life Cycle
There are three stages in its life cycle, namely the egg, the chick, and the adult.
Many people wonder how and why eggs develop into chicks. You might wonder why eggs from the supermarket don't grow and hatch when incubated. The male chicken or rooster makes the difference.

Inside a Chicken Egg Day 1 Day 6 Day 13 The brain and nervous system begin to form. The head fold begins to form. Blood islands appear. The eyes begin to form. The beak becomes visible. The wing bends at the elbow. The allantois begins to fuse with the chorion. The ribs begin to appear. The gizzard begins to form. The intestines begin to loop. Fingers of the wings are covered with feather papillae. The left and right collar bones fuse to form the wishbone.
From Egg to Chick Day 17 Day 21 The beak turns towards the air cell. The neck begins to spasm. The egg tooth pips through the shell. Exhausted and wet - but alive - the chick has hatched!
