4. Why the Common Core?
Preparation: The standards will help prepare students with
the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the
education and training after high school.
Competition: Common Core Standards will help ensure
students are globally competitive.
Equity: Expectations are consistent for all and not
dependent on the student’s state.
Clarity: The standards are focused, coherent and clear.
Clear standards help students understand what is
expected of them.

9. Smarter Balance
Summative Assessment
• Mandatory Comprehensive assessment (Grades 3 - 8, 11)
• Testing within the last 12 weeks of the instructional year.
• Supports accountability
• Measures growth

10. Smarter Balance
Interim Assessment
• Optional comprehensive and content-cluster assessment
• Learning progressions
• Available for administration throughout the year

11. Smarter Balance
Summative and Interim Assessment
• Selected response
• Short constructed response
• extended constructive response
• technology enhanced
• performance tasks

Performance Tasks
When the summative test is taken in spring it will have two
components…a comprehensive end-of-year computer
adaptive assessment and performance tasks. These
assessments (for both ELA and Math) will require
perseverance skills...

13. Smarter Balance
The role of the Performance Tasks
• Measure capacities such as depth of understanding, research
skills, complex analysis, and identification of relevant evidence
• Require student-initiated planning, management of information
and ideas, interaction with materials
• Require produxtion of more extended responses (oral
presentations, exhibitions, other scorable products..)
• Reflect a real-world and/or scenario-based problem

The Structure of the Performance Tasks
(Three Main Parts)
Stimulus: readings, video clips, audio clips, research topic, visuals…
Information Processing: note taking, comprehension questions,
small group discussions, simulated internet search, graphic org…
Product/Performance: essay, report, story, script, oral presentation
with speech or other graphics, responses to embedded construct-
ed response questions…
