BACKGROUND INFORMATION <ul><li>The Ramayana is in direct relationship with the Hindu life. </li></ul><ul><li>The characters of the epic are considered models of proper behavior. </li></ul><ul><li>The epic was composed between 200 BCE and 200 CE. </li></ul><ul><li>Valmiki, a Brahman, was the poet. </li></ul>
  3. 3. THEMES OF THE RAMAYANA <ul><li>love between husband and wife </li></ul><ul><li>parental relationships </li></ul><ul><li>society’s values are complicating factors </li></ul>
  4. 4. DUTIES OF HINDU CITIZENS/HEROES <ul><li>Each person must be loyal to his/her dharma. </li></ul><ul><li>Dharma is a righteous behavior prescribed for each role in life. </li></ul><ul><li>Suffering and sorrow are part of a righteous life. </li></ul>
  5. 5. DUTIES OF HINDU CITIZENS/HEROES <ul><li>The wife’s purpose was to be dedicated to her husband. Her love must be pure and faithful and must meet society’s standards for success. </li></ul><ul><li>Women, during antiquity, were not think independently. </li></ul><ul><li>Sita is considered to be one of the greatest heroines in all of literature. She is often ascribed as the highest ideal of love, devotion and faithfulness </li></ul>
  6. 6. DUTIES OF HINDU CITIZENS/HEROES <ul><li>The husband is expected to first remain devoted to duty or dharma rather than wife. He must also be the model of proper societal behavior. </li></ul><ul><li>Rama fulfils the life he is supposed to lead even if it negatively impacts his marriage. He appears to be heartless, but lives by the Hindu laws that he embraces. </li></ul>
  7. 7. THIS EPIC ENFORCES THE IDEA OF WHAT ONE DOES IN ONE’S LIFETIME DETERMINES WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN THE NEXT.
