7.6 HSW: Blowing in the wind 17 January 2011 List as many electrical items as you can. What do they transfer their electrical energy to?
Aims Draw conclusions consistent with the scientific evidence. [Level 5] Develop experimental design skills. [Level 6] Analyse data in order to justify an opinion. [Level 7] Perform multi-step calculations in order to evaluate a process. [Level 8]
7.6 Blowing in the wind?Questions 1.	Why is there a lot of interest in generating	electricity from the wind? 2.	Give a weighting from 0 to 10 for each	opinion on page 122 of the Go Science! 3pupil book for and against wind energy.	(10 means you think the opinion is very	important, 0 means you think it is not	important.) Total the scores. Which opinions	have the highest score – for or against?	Does this agree with your point of view? 3.	The government has decided that wind	power is a good idea, but does not want to	cover a lot of the countryside with turbines as local people often protest about the damage to views and tourism. Suggest two alternative ideas for the placement of turbines. (Level 4) (Level 5) (Level 6) 1 of 3
7.6 Blowing in the wind?Questions (Level 7) 4.	A typical home may use 0.002 MW of	electricity. A typical power station produces	520 MW of energy. How many homes could	this power station supply? 5.	Using the table and graph in lesson 7.6	Blowing in the wind? of the Go Science! 3pupil book calculate how many homes a	wind turbine could supply in: a. the Lake District b. southern England. (Level 8) 2 of 3
7.6 Blowing in the wind?Questions (Level EP) 6.	Hightown is in the Lake District. It requires	500 MW of electricity on an average day.	Sleepyville is a village in southern England.	It requires 100 MW on an average day.	Using the tables and graphs in lesson 7.6	Blowing in the wind? of the Go Science! 3pupil book calculate how many turbines are	required to supply each. 7.	Homes in the UK need more electricity in	the winter than the summer. Can wind	generation help with this? Justify your	answer. (Level EP) 3 of 3
Pupils are given a post-it note. They have to write down a final opinion on wind farms with a sentence justifying that opinion. Pin on a wall and read out some of the comments.
