1 12 Osmosis

 1. 1. Launch

What do the words “hydro” “philac” “phobic” mean?

What is the cell membrane made up of?

What are the two parts of a phospholipid and what are the characteristics of each?

 2. 2. Congratulations to B5 for the highest percentage of homework turned in last week!
 3. 3. Osmosis
 4. 4. Make a hypothesis based off the following information:

We are placing corn starch in a ziplock bag and placing the ziplock in a beaker that contains iodine

Note that:

Iodine turns color when in contact with a carbohydrate.

Corn starch is obviously a starch and therefore a ____________________

 5. 5. Objectives

SWBAT describe the structure of a cell membrane

SWBAT explain the process of osmosis

 6. 6. Vocabulary

Solution : mixture of dissolved molecules

Solvent : the liquid that the molecules are dissolved in

Solute : the dissolved molecules

Concentration : measurement of how much solute is the solution

 7. 7. Review

What is the function of the cell membrane ?

Controls/regulates what enters or leaves a cell

Protect and supports the cell

 8. 8.

Made of a double-layered sheet called a phospholipid bilayer

Has proteins and carbohydrates mixed into the layers

What is the cell membrane made of?
 9. 9. What is a phospholipid?

Type of lipid with special characteristics

Has a hydrophilic (water-loving) area and a hydrophobic (water-fearing) area

Hydrophilic Hydrophobic
 10. 10. Semi-permeability

The cell membrane is semi-permeable (selective about what can enter/leave)

Water is one molecule that can pass easily across the cell’s membrane

 11. 11. Diffusion

Any movement of molecules from a HIGH concentration to a LOW concentration. (things go from where there is a lot to where there is a little)

Diffusion can be when things move ACROSS the membrane (from high to low concentration)

 12. 12. What is osmosis?

Osmosis = the diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane

Water will move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration to achieve equilibrium (balance)

 13. 14. How to describe solutions

Isotonic : solutions both have the same concentration of solutes

Hypotonic : solution has less solute than the other solution (below strength)

Hypertonic : solution has more solute than the other solution (above strength)

 14. 15. Hypotonic solution Isotonic solution Hypertonic solution
