Does your essay have a clear structure

and fully address the question?
Knowledge
Aim for 6 pieces of relevant, substantive
knowledge; don’t duplicate information
Analysis
It is not enough to simply list facts; you
must explain why it is relevant. Include
arguments for and against the view.

• Before you start, write a plan. This will save you time!
• Your essay should have the following:
Introduction
Set the scene, explain what you
will discuss and how you’ll do it
Main section
6 marks for Knowledge = 6 substantive
points. Keep referring back to question.
Explain why evidence is relevant
Conclusion
Summarise findings; answer question

• Paper 1 takes 1 hour, 20 mins = 40 mins per essay
• Do not spend too much time on one essay
• As a general guide your time should be spent as follows:

• Write the main section
• Write a conclusion
