    • What is a conversion factor?
  • 2. Conversion Factors
    • Grams and milligrams
    • Liters and kiloliters
    • Centimeters and meters
    • Feet and miles
    • Ounces and pounds
    • Days and years
  • 3. A man runs 1400 meters. How many kilometers did he run?
  • 4. 14 millimeters is the same as saying how many meters?
  • 5. 22 liters is how many mL?
  • 6. A vitamin is 75 mg. How many grams is the vitamin? A man runs 2450 meters. How many kilometers did he run?
  • 7.
    • This classroom measures 15 meters across. Convert that to centimeters.
    • A graduated cylinder is filled to 65 mL. How many liters does is contain?
    • McDevitt is exactly 0.11 km from end to end. How many meters is it?
    • A scrumptious BBQ bacon cheddar colossal burger has a mass of 452 g. What is its mass in kilograms?
  • 8. How many feet make up a marathon? (A marathon is 26.2 miles.)
  • 9. 6.5 pounds contains how many ounces?
  • 10. One tablespoon is half an ounce. 20 tbsp = how many ounces?
  • 11. Donovan McNabb throws a 65-yard TD pass. How many feet was the pass?
  • 12.
    • 12 years contain how many days?
    • How many ounces is a quarter-pounder? (0.25 lbs net weight before cooking)
    • A cow can produce 7.7 gallons of milk per day. How many quarts can the cow produce?
    • I can hold my breath for 282 seconds. How many minutes can I stay underwater?
  • 13. Can you solve this?
    • This year contains 365 days. In total, how many minutes make up the year 2009?
  • 14. Using MULTIPLE Conversion Factors
  • 15.
    • 147 cm is the same as how many meters?
    • 7.9 feet is how many inches?
    • There are 16 ounces in a pound. How many ounces are in 6.2 pounds?
    • 1.6 kL contains how many mL?
  • 16. Two Conversion Factors
    • Determine the link between them.
      • (For instance, if you were converting from millimeters to kilometers, the link is “meters”.)
      • (If you were converting from miles to inches, the link is “feet”.)
    • CANCELLING UNITS IS A MUST!
    • As always, multiply across the top and divide across the bottom.
  • 17. How many centimeters are in a kilometer?
  • 18. How many inches are in 1.5 miles?
  • 19. How many meters tall is a man who is 71 inches?
  • 20.
    • How many seconds are in the school day, which is 6.6 hours?
    • 750,000 millimeters is how many kilometers?
    • If one tablespoon is half an ounce, how many tablespoons make up 6.8 pints? (One pint is 16 oz.)
  • 21. 2-step Problems
    • A 12-ounce can of soda holds how many liters of liquid? (To solve this, you need to know that one ounce equals 29.6 mL.)
    • Assuming that one grain of sand has a mass of one milligram, calculate the number of grains (number of milligrams) in 22.7 kg of sand (which is about 50 pounds).
  • 22. 2-step Problem
  • 23. 3-step Problem
    • At the Olympics, sprinters run the 100-meter dash. How many feet long is the race?
  • 24. Rates and Densities as Conversion Factors
  • 25. Conversions
    • Rates and densities can (and in our case, MUST) be used as conversion factors.
    • Be sure to orient (flip-flop) them properly in the problem.
    • 5.0 g/cm 3 = 5.0 g
    • --------
    • 1 cm 3
  • 26. A metal with a density of 4.25 g/cm 3 has a volume of 65.0 cm 3 . What is its mass?
  • 27. At a speed of 55.0 mph, how many miles can a person go in 6.25 hours?
  • 28. If a piece of wood has a density of 0.91 g/cm3 and a mass of 67 g, what is its volume?
  • 29. If a person travels at 35.0 mph for 0.15 hours (which is exactly nine minutes), how many FEET does she travel?
  • 30. What is the mass in kg of a brick that has a volume of 665.0 mL and a density of 8.0 g/cm 3 ?
  • 31. Test Yourself
    • Convert 5.0 m to cm.
    • Convert 2600 feet to miles.
    • Convert 0.03 kL to mL.
    • Convert 0.5 hours to seconds.
    • Convert 12.0 inches to cm.
    • Convert 19.00 feet to cm.
    • Convert 200 yards to inches.
    • Mass = 45.0 g. Density = 5.5 g/cm 3 . Find volume.
    • Volume = 50.2 mL. Density = 12.0 g/mL. Find mass.
    • Traveling at 45 km/h for 3.4 hours. Find distance.
  • 32. Test Yourself
    • Convert 5.0 m to cm.
    • Convert 2600 feet to miles. (5280 ft = 1 mi)
    • Convert 0.03 kL to mL.
    • Convert 0.5 hours to seconds.
    • Convert 12.0 inches to cm. (1 in = 2.54 cm)
    • Convert 19.00 feet to cm.
    • Convert 200 yards to inches.
    • Convert 12.0 lbs to oz. (1 lb = 16 oz)

  • 33. Solve me for BONUS POINTS!
    • A solid, rectangular block of aluminum is to be used in the engine of a race car. Three different members of the race team measure the length, width, and height of the block and get, respectively, 57.50 cm, 32.4 mm, and 5.8 inches. Given that the density of aluminum is 2.70 g/cm3, determine, in pounds, the weight of the block. (2.20 pounds equals one kilogram.)
