      • Mario Lemieux will live on and on.
      • In my o pinion, Mario Lemieux was the best hockey player that has ever lived. Given that I wasn’t alive to watch Gordie Howe, Maurice “The Rocket” Richard or Bobby Orr, I believe that Mario Lemieu x has earned enough respect and accomplished enough to surpass these aforementioned greats. “ The Great One”, Wayne Gretzky who is commonly recognized as the greatest hockey player to have every played, having won many championships and destroyed all previous individual records, categorizes Mario “The Magnificent” above himself.
      • In 1984 the Pittsburgh penguins had finished in last place in the NHL. In order to save themselves for an inevitable bankruptcy, they had traded away all their talented players. One reward for their poor play, was the ability to select a highly-touted player from Laval Titans of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Mario Lemieux was selected 1 st overall by Pittsburgh in 1984. Upon his arrival in Pittsburgh, he was shy as he couldn’t speak English. His abilities on the ices spoke for him. Mario scored on his first shot, on his first shift in the NHL. He continued his great play to win the Rookie of the Year award.
      • Mario’s popularity soon began to grow and Pittsburgh eventually turned their bankrupt team around. By the late 90s, Mario had led his Penguins to 2 Stanley Cup championship titles, won many scoring titles, won the Canada Cup, numerous other accolades and trophies. He did however, fall victim to cancer which lead to his early retirement.
      • Although he would eventually come back, Mario was always in pain. He accomplished all of this with such pain that he couldn’t even tie skates himself and often would go to chemotherapy before games. He overcame so many difficulties and accomplished impossible feats. These are the reasons why I think he will be forever immortalized as the best hockey player ever.
