The Greenhouse Effect: … in a nutshell
Sunlight arrives at the Earth’s surface and heats up the ground
Greenhouse gases act like the glass in a greenhouse and trap the escaping heat energy (See figure 7 p37)
Some of this warmth then escapes back into space, just like heat leaving a room when the window is left open.
What do greenhouse gases do?
Don’t forget the greenhouse effect is natural and a good thing! Without it, conditions on earth would be up to 30 degrees cooler – too cold for humans to exist.
But human actions are increasing the amount of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere... ... and causing global warming
What greenhouse gases are discharged in each case? Methane from cows as they flatulate Carbon dioxide and nitrous oxides from car exhaust Carbon dioxide and nitrous oxides from power stations that burn fossil fuels Trees take in carbon dioxide so cutting down trees (deforestation) means there is more in the atmosphere
What’s INDUSTRIALISATION got to do with it?
Industrialisation is the development of the manufacturing sector. In other words a country producing goods in factories instead of farming and fishing.
This started in Europe and the USA first and made them rich. Now LEDCs like China and India are industrialising . They want to improve their quality of life and become MEDCs. But that means even more greenhouse gases being discharged into the atmosphere to add to our ‘global warming’ problem
What will happen to the global temperatures if the USA, Europe and Japan continue to emit high levels of greenhouse gases? AND IF CHINA & INDIA EMIT EVER MORE GREENHOUSE GASES AS THEY STRIVE FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
And then there’s Brazil, Mexico and a whole host of other countries beginning to industrialise and therefore discharge ever increasing quantities of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. But is it right to force such countries to stop? After all they would say we have been pumping such gases into the atmosphere for years and that we should not deny them the opportunity to develop now. The entire world needs to cooperate and find ways of cutting the gases without stopping development for poor countries!
