SHANKA N A LY S I SShank is an action film for the youthgeneration, set in a decaying futureLondon. A gang set out on a chase toavenge the murder of one of theirown.Visually the whole poster contrasts adark theme as the lighting it set to alow key. This dark theme representsa dangerous feel to the poster. Thecostumes worn by the 6 actors are quite rough and informal encouraging that this is anaction drama film. Expressions from the 6 actors are performing a distressed uncomfortablesituation representing a dilemma theyre currently facing. It can also mean London 2015 is adangerous place to be in the future. The word "Shank" which in UK slang means "Stab" withthe words in red express a situation of danger elaborating the fact why the background ofyouths are wearing hoodies and covering their identity with bandanas. As black people areoften represented and stereotyped by the media for committing dangerous acts such asrobbery, violence and extortion.
SHANKA N A LY S I SThis is the first intertitle shown in theTrailer - Shank. Intertitles are designedto give the audience minimalinformation about the events intrailers to indulge the audience to buythe film. Arguably in this intertitle itstates: "From the distributor that brought you KiDULTHOOD" I honestly didnt know what thismeant. I thought to ask the director and executive producers the relevance of this - why not"the producer, director, maker of KiDULTHOOD?" Do audience really care about whodistributed KiDULTHOOD? They want to watch the trailer. But judging from imDB critics, theysaid this intertitle pushed them to go see the film because they knew KiDULTHOOD was areally good film. The use of KiDULTHOOD being larger than the above font can indicate toaudiences the institution who distributed the predecessor of this successful film can pushsales. The crisp clear formatting of the words with grungy black colours within the text andbackground demonstrate a theme of unhappiness and dangerous accusations. This can alsorepresent poverty and London 2015 as a recession-based movie. The uncleanliness of thegrungy background can also adhere to characters representation of a nasty-nature withinthe film.
SHANKA N A LY S I SThis was the ending shot for Shank. The punch leading towards the camerastopped the non-diegetic and diegeticmusic as the last intertitle wasintroduced - this shows us that thesuspense and tension has stopped. The effect of this makes the audiencewant to watch the film as there is a storage of excitement stopping at the end. The speed ofthe actor and shot also encouraged the pace of the music. With the handheld shaky cameramovement with the actor expressing an angry distressed face leading a fist towards thecamera represents a state of struggle and insecurity. This also increases the storyline of apoor London-recession based city.
SHANKA N A LY S I SThe sound was extremely important in this trailer as it was the key of the successful weekendsales. The suspense was maintained throughout the film keeping the audience on their kneeswith the change in music from high to low then to high with the addition of the grungyintertitles making it combine into a professional trailer.I will be using this similar technique in our trailer as this fits into our idea. The suspense andthe decided plot of our trailer follows a similar resemblance of the way this trailer runs.
