The French and Indian War was a conflict between the French and British empires over control of North America from 1754-1763. The war began as a result of territorial disputes in present-day Pennsylvania and escalated into an all-out war for control of the continent. The French had claims over the land between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River, while the British controlled the 13 colonies along the eastern coast. Native American tribes generally allied with the French. The war ended in 1763 with a British victory, giving them control of French territories east of the Mississippi River.
