  • 3. Page 3 World Teacher Appreciation Day Sunday, October 5, 2008 Let your teacher know that he or she is doing a great job! During the week of October 5, take the time to let your children's teachers know they are truly appreciated. You will be among parents and students from around the world observing World Teacher Appreciation Day and celebrating the contributions of all teachers. Say 'thanks' to your bus driver on Oct. 15 If your child rides the bus to school, you have a special opportunity to thank the bus driver for the important service he or she provides. On Wednesday, Oct. 15, the Peel District School Board will hold Bus Driver Appreciation Day. On that day, the board and schools will hold special events and activities to recognize bus drivers, but we en- courage parents and students to participate too. Take a moment that day to say thanks to your child's bus driver and ask your child to do so too. • 4. Page 4 Procedure helps keep students safe at school Peel schools provide a safe environment for staff and students to work and learn. The board has many proce- dures to ensure safety ¾ including regular fire drills, evacuation plans and criminal record checks for new staff and volunteers. Together with Peel Police and the Dufferin-Peel board, the board developed a quot;lockdownquot; procedure to help keep schools safe during any potentially serious violent incident. Notes Jim Grieve, director of education, quot; This procedure was designed to make sure we are prepared for the worst case scenario in a school. We are not doing this because we expect to have potentially serious violent incidents in our schools or because we believe violence is on the rise. In fact, we are doing everything possi- ble to make our schools safe.quot; quot;We are taking this precautionary measure because we know that the best way to ensure safety in these situa- tions is to be prepared. This is just another way to keep schools safe in addition to the fire drills and evacua- tion procedures already in place. Every school will review the key points of the 'lockdown' process with stu- dents. They will rehearse, to make sure staff and students know what to do if they have to initiate a lock- down.quot; During the rehearsals, the principal will announce on the PA to quot;initiate lockdown procedure.quot; The school bell will ring for 30 seconds straight. Students and staff inside the school will: go to the closest room, close the door and lock it, if possible lie down on the floor away from doors and windows remain on the floor until further directions are given Students and staff outside the school will: move as far away from the building as possible remain outside until further directions are given Depending on the situation, students and staff outside the building may be directed to an evacuation site. When the rehearsal is over, the principal will make an announcement on the PA. As part of the school's over- all safety plan, rehearsals will take place twice during the school year. In the unlikely event of an actual lockdown, Peel Police ask that parents do not go to the school. You will not be allowed to enter a school that is in lockdown. There will be a designated Parent Information Site for you to attend and get up to date, accurate information. To find your Parent Information Site or get further details, listen to local media or visit or, or contact the police on their non-emergency line at 905-453-3311. quot;In a real emergency, our staff must exercise critical judgement to keep everyone safe. It's important for staff and students to know what to do if the school is ever in a situation where this action is necessary, quot; notes Grieve. For more information or for a copy of the complete procedure, speak to your school principal.
