  • 1. Session Four – It’s Not Just PubMed National Library of Medicine for the Health Sciences Student Presented by Mark D. Puterbaugh, Information Services Librarian Eastern University Libraries St. Davids, PA 19087
  • 2. Daily Med DailyMed provides high quality information about marketed drugs. This information includes FDA labels (package inserts). This Web site offers health information providers and the public with a standard, comprehensive, up-to-date, look-up and download resource of medication content and labeling as found in medication package inserts. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) provides this as a public service and does not accept advertisements.
  • 3. Search for Drug by Name You wish to search for information on the drug warfarin. As you type in the word a list of suggested terms appears on the drop down list. The results return a list of related drug information, including variants and generic drug names.
  • 4. Drop-down Tabs for Detailed Information Drug Label Sections drop-down tabs present information such as: • Clinical Pharmacology • Indications and Usage • Contraindications • Warnings • Patient Counseling • Warnings • Over dosage • Medication Guides
  • 5. Links Out to Many Resources DailyMed links out to many reliable resources for additional information such as: • DrugBank • ClinicalTrials.gov • PubMed • MedlinePlus • and more.
  • 6. Drug Information Portal The NLM’s Drug Information Portal gives users a gateway to selected drug information from the U.S. National Library of Medicine and other key U.S. Government agencies. At the top of the page are links to individual resources with potential drug information, including summaries tailored to various audiences. Resources include the NLM search systems useful in searching for a drug, NLM research resources, resources organized by audience and class, and other NIH and government resources such as FDA and CDC.   • 7. Links Out to Select NIH Resources The Drug Information Portal links out to databases produced by the NIH. The list of resources for a “warfarin” search include: •ClinicalTrials.gov •MedlinePlus •LiverTox •LactMed •Pillbox
  • 8. Provides In-depth Information The Portal links to variety of additional information assets such as: •ChemIDplus •PubChem •synonyms •Drugs@FDA •USA.gov
  • 9. MedlinePlus MedlinePlus is a great ready reference tool and consumer health information site. Choose the “Health Topics” link to view the listings of available health information.
  • 10. Browse Topic Headings Health topics are displayed under easily understood subject headings Choosing “Children and Teenagers” under “Demographic Groups” reveals a listing of resources for that age group.

  • 12. Search MedlinePlus Searches reliable resources for consumer oriented information.

  • 14. Images from the History of Medicine (IHM) IHM is a browsable, searchable collections of thousands of public domain images from the the NLM collections. http://ihm.nlm.nih.gov
  • 15. Grab an Image View and export images in a variety of sizes. Create an account and build a collection.
  • 16. International Resources http://europepmc.org Europe PMC is based on PubMed Central (PMC), developed at the NCBI in the USA and is part of a network of PMC International (PMCI) repositories that also includes PMC Canada. It is supported by 26 funders of life sciences and biomedical research, including charities and government organizations across Europe, led by the Wellcome Trust. Europe PMC is developed by the European Bioinformatics Institute, The University of Manchester (Mimas and NaCTeM), and the British Library.
  • 17. Gain Familiarity with Global Research PubMed Central Canada is a free on-line archive of published, peer-reviewed health and life sciences research that allows users to quickly and easily search and download the latest health research papers. http://pubmedcentralcanada.ca/pmcc/
  • 18. KoreaMed http://www.koreamed.org/ KoreaMed, a service of the Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors (KAMJE), provides access to articles published in Korean medical, dental, nursing, nutrition and veterinary journals. KoreaMed records include links to full-text content in Synapse and publisher web sites.
  • 19. PubMed for Mobile http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mobile/ The NLM provides a wide variety of mobile apps and sites so that you can search on the go. Commercial providers have made a number of excellent apps for iOS and Android.
