  2. 2. <ul><li>Mold is a fungus, neither plant or animal </li></ul><ul><li>Grows outside and indoors </li></ul><ul><li>Purpose of mold: to break down and digest organic materials (such as leaves) </li></ul>Magnified mold
  3. 3. <ul><li>Moisture and food are needed </li></ul><ul><li>Moisture in the form of condensation and leaks </li></ul><ul><li>Food is any organic substance (paper, cloth, wood, plants, soil) </li></ul><ul><li>Flooding should be assessed for mold. </li></ul>Condensation
  4. 4. <ul><li>Allergic reactions, asthma and irritants Check for hay fever-like symptoms like headache, sneezing runny note, red eyes and skin rash. Can also irritate skin, eyes, nose, throat and lungs. </li></ul><ul><li>Other health reactions can include pneumonitis, infections and headaches </li></ul><ul><li>Damp buildings may contain other contaminants such as bacteria, dust mites, cockroaches and other pests. They may also release chemicals indoors. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>Colors: Mold comes in many colors, including white. </li></ul><ul><li>Smell: Some compounds produced by molds have strong smells. Any moldy smell should be investigated </li></ul>Mold on bread
  6. 6. <ul><li>Use a moisture meter </li></ul><ul><li>Pull up carpet in wet or damp places </li></ul><ul><li>Look behind things. Most mold is found by simply looking. </li></ul>Moisture meter
  7. 7. <ul><li>Dry it quickly: Mold will not grow if wet or damp items are dried within 24 to 48 hours. </li></ul><ul><li>Methods may include: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Wet vacuum, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>a damp wipe with water & a little detergent, </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>With a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuum </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Throw away mold contaminated products in a double bag at least 7 mil thick. </li></ul>Hepa vacuum
  8. 8. <ul><li>Keep building and furnishing dry </li></ul><ul><li>When things are wet, dry them quickly within 24 to 48 hours </li></ul><ul><li>Perform routine maintenance, cleaning and repairs </li></ul>Cleaning mold in the shower
