2. THE MIDDLE COLONIES/ FOUNDERS
The Middle Colonies are made up of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and
Delaware. New York was originally founded by the Dutch, but then the English took
over in 1664, and changed the name (originally named New Amsterdam) to New York.
New Jersey was founded by George Carteret and Lord John Berkley, they were
awarded this land by the Duke of York for Carteret and Berkley being English Nobles.
Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn who founded it for religious freedom and
as a safe haven for Quakers. (Quakers are a religious group of people that want nothing
more than to live life with peace and not violence, and they also believe in equal rights).
Delaware was founded by the Swedes for land and to do trading with other counties.

3. ECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF
THE MIDDLE COLONIES
The middle colonies were very successful out of all the English settlements. They had
very fertile soil and great harbors. For those reasons the middle colonies were great
for farming, so there were many cash crops. There excellent harbors made them very
successful trading colonies. Over all the middle colonies were very wealthy and
successful colonies.
4. TRIANGULAR TRADE
The triangular trade was a trading route from Europe to Africa to the Americas. It
traded manufactured goods, sugar and molasses, slaves, gold, pepper, tobacco, ect.
5. NAVIGATION ACTS
The Navigation acts were rules made by England that limited the colonial trading
rights. Traders could only trade with England or its colonies. Traders could only use
English ships made in England or its colonies. So if you were a colonial merchant in
England or its colonies you couldn’t trade with other country's like Spain, China, India
ect. This was one of the causes that led to the American Revolution.

6. THE MIDDLE COLONIES WERE VERY SUCCESSFUL
AND THEY ACCEPPTED DIFFERENT RELIGIONS, SO
TO THIS DAY THE MIDDLE COLONIES ARE A PART
OF OR AMERICAN HISTORY.
