History  History  Sumo began long time ago in Japan about 2000years ago, but it never became famous until the Edo period in the early 1600s.  The first time is was mentioned was in the oldest Japanese document ( kojiki: book of ancient manners).  The first sumo wrestler was named Kajin Sumo.  “The first sumo exhibition given to a outsider of Japan was in 1854.”
  4. 4.  There are 6 main tournaments e.very year.  Dohyo = Ring  Rikishi = fighter 力士 土俵
  5. 5. How are theylikethat?  Training: warming up Shiko: leg stomping 500 times a day Teppo: pushing against a wooden pole. Suriashi: crouching position with hands in the elbows. Matawari: stretching exercise on the floor were the legs are far apart bellies to the ground
  6. 6.  Challenge matches: Like the normal fights. Low rank vs. high rank rikishi.  Sanbangeiko: Two of them fight a couple of times  Busukarigeiko: One runs over the other one and to practice the landing
  7. 7. Rules  There are three main rules in Sumo Wrestling 1. Stepping out side of the circle, makes you lose. 1. Always touch the ring with your feet. 1. The use of illegal techniques such as pulling hair, kicking above the knee, strike a closed fist punch, are not permitted, witch leads to disqualification.
  8. 8. Clothing Mawashi: Is a belt that the rikishi wears during the competition and in training sessions. It is made out of silk and can come in an awesome amount of colors. The seize of it is approximately 30 ft when it is unwrapped, and when it is wrapped it is about 2 ft wide and eleven pounds. It is wrapped several times around the rikishi and at the last part with a pretty big knot
