  • Open the 3 files in the photomerge folder. Use those to demonstrate these concepts, and then move on to the next demo on photomerge.
  • Continue working with Flower.psd Choose Select > Grow to include all adjacent pixels falling within the tolerance range specified in the magic wand options. contiguous Choose Select > Similar to include pixels throughout the image, not just adjacent ones, falling within the tolerance range. non-contiguous Modify http://www.webreference.com/graphics/column36/6.html
  • Continue working with Ranch House.jpg The Auto Contrast command adjusts image contrast automatically. Because Auto Contrast does not adjust channels individually, it does not introduce or remove color casts. It clips the shadow and highlight values in an image and then maps the remaining lightest and darkest pixels in the image to pure white (level 255) and pure black (level 0). This makes the highlights appear lighter and shadows appear darker. The Auto Levels command automatically adjusts the black point and white point in an image. This clips a portion of the shadows and highlights in each channel and maps the lightest and darkest pixels in each color channel to pure white (level 255) and pure black (level 0). The intermediate pixel values are redistributed proportionately. As a result, using Auto Levels increases the contrast in an image because the pixel values are expanded. Because Auto Levels adjusts each color channel individually, it may remove color or introduce color casts.
  • for the next set of slides use Flower.psd Analyze and deconstruct the layer fuctions in this document. A layer comp is a snapshot of a state of the Layers palette. Layer comps record three types of layer options: Layer visibility—whether a layer is showing or hidden. Layer position in the document. Layer appearance—whether a layer style is applied to the layer and the layer’s blending mode.
  • Lets use Lake(16bit).tif to create a hand-tinted effect photograph. Snapshots are similar to the states listed in the History palette, but they offer additional advantages: You can name a snapshot to make it easy to identify. Snapshots can be stored for an entire work session. You can compare effects easily. For example, you can take a snapshot before and after applying a filter. Then select the first snapshot, and try the same filter with different settings. Switch between the snapshots to find the settings you like best. With snapshots, you can recover your work easily. When you experiment with a complex technique or apply an action, take a snapshot first. If you’re not satisfied with the results, you can select the snapshot to undo all the steps. Note: Snapshots are not saved with the image—closing an image deletes its snapshots. Also, unless you select the Allow Non-Linear History option, selecting a snapshot and changing the image deletes all of the states currently listed in the History palette.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 What does a mask do? MASKS (BLACK) CONCEAL NON-MASKS (WHITE) REVEAL “Never fear, old chum. All will become clear soon.” When pixels on a layer are concealed, they reveal the pixels on the layers beneath. When pixels on a layer are revealed, they conceal the pixels on the layers beneath.
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 Masks Don’t worry, masks can be confusing! White vs. Black vs. Grey Simple Layer Masks Instant layer mask from a selection Alt-click to reveal a mask Editing a layer vs. editing a mask How to create a gradient-based transparency mask Clipping masks Quick masks
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 Different types of masks Layer masks Clipping masks Vector masks “Quick Masks”
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 Using masks with more advanced selections Using the image to mask itself The Color Range command The Refine Edge command Making adjustments by utilizing Quick Mask mode
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 Layer Masks Layer Masks are the most typical type of masking. They are pixel-based grayscale layers that conceal a portion of a layer from all visibility. Layer Masks are entirely based in the black/conceal white/reveal model. Each layer mask applies to a specific layer and that layer only. Examples of adjustments and special effects Brightness & Contrast, Hue & Saturation, Burning & Dodging, Sharpening, Vignettes, Working with filters
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 The benefits (and limitations) of Clipping Masks Use Clipping Masks to mask away multiple layers with one easily editable mask. Limitations and odd behaviors: Clipping Masks, may not be applied beyond a layer group. IE: You may only mask the layers inside one layer group at a time. Clipping Masks do not rely upon the black/conceal white/reveal model we’ve learned. Instead, they apply all pixels of a layer to the mask. The Clipping Mask itself resides beneath the layers it is clipping, but you select the layers above to apply the masks.
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 Masking with Live Text? Just use a clipping mask.
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 Moving on …Moving on … DAY3 HOMEWORK DUE ILT workbook Unit 2: “Masks” Time: 50 minutes.
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 Vector Masks Benefits include the fine-tuned adjustability of all object-based shapes and paths.
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 What are “Quick Masks”? Not really a mask? Completely temporary An “advanced” selection technique similar in form to the Quick Selection Tool Uses the model of black/conceal white/reveal An advantage of Quick Masks is that they provide the gradients (levels of grayscale) provided by Layer Masks. Other selection techniques are pixel-on pixel-off. IE: no levels of transparency supported.
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 Introduction to Vector-based “Drawing” Paths What’s the difference between painting and drawing? What is a path? Utilizes essential skills sets: Pen tool, vector path management, path selection and modification, layer masking, fill layers, layer effects, image export and optimization. FILE NEEDED: Ducky.tif 1) Your client wants to use the above image in a web image gallery for an online sales system, but she does not want the yellow paisley background included in the final image. 2) Mask away everything but the rubber ducky. 3) Include a plain white background. 4) Place a subtle drop shadow underneath the bottom of the image so it appears to be sitting on a physical surface. 5) Export the image for the web so that the resulting file is 35k or less. 6) Show the final image and file to your instructor!

  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 Conclusions … Sincere thanks! You cannot learn the violin in a day or two. Digital image manipulation is a skill – like any other – that requires gradual & continual practice & improvement. Approach everything on a need-to-know basis, and don't worry about that which you do not yet understand. Stay upbeat! … but if you get frustrated, remember: You can always turn off the machine and walk away. :) Good luck. Best wishes. And get in touch if you need more help!
