  • Hi – my name is KH, 29 yrs old I actually live in Surrey in a village called Hersham which is about 15 miles south west of London, but I want to talk to you about Bognor Regis – my spiritual home if you like the reason I am talking to you about Bognor Regis is that I have spent most of my life there many of my friends and family still live in the area, the Rotary Club that sponsored my trip is the Bognor club, and whenever I am asked where I come from I always say Bognor. Bognor is a small town on the South Coast of England about 55 miles south west of London – it has a population of about 23,000. Bognor started out as a fishing town in the 18 th Century but was turned into a seaside resort by Sir Richard Hotham – tourism took off over the next century or so and became famous for being the tourist destination of choice for a certain King George V in the 1920’s - hence the Regis part (‘of the king’) Legend has it that when the King was recovering from a serious illness, he was told “not to worry, the doctors had fixed him and he could visit his beloved Bognor again soon” – he famously replied “oh Bugger Bognor” which turned out to be his last words as he died suddenly short after. Whether true or not, they have left a lasting legacy of Bognor, rather than a holiday destination of choice now it is a town famed for being slightly run down and outdated. With sunshine at a premium in the UK and cheap flights to the costa del sol now all the rage it has struggled to keep up but maybe a global recession will see UK holiday makers travelling back to the shores of Bognor.

  • So I live and work in the more northern part of District 1250 in the County of Surrey. I work in Local Government for Surrey County Council as a Strategy and Policy Projects Manager I am currently working on a project to try and get more of our secondary schools in Surrey to change from looking like this, to looking like this – (Matthew Arnold School).
  • (Recent school built in neighbouring County). The UK Government is currently investing a significant amount of money into a large scale capital investment programme called Building Schools for the Future I work on this project for Surrey and my job is to support the Project Director to oversee all of the different aspects of the project. At the moment we are very much in the planning phase: - To agree where new schools need to be built, where old or failing schools could be replaced or where there are too many schools (or school closures). Prioritise secondary schools – Surrey Large, 80 schools, cant do it all at once – need to set priorities Procure private sector partner to build schools – BSF worth up to £800m or $1.2bn over the next 15 years to Surrey – must have effective procurement solution Most importantly, to work with first schools to define future educational model – and to translate this into school design and new IT systems Fascinating project across a wide variety of different disciplines, but its not all hard work... In my spare time, I play a LOT of football in the winter – usually three times a week and play tennis and Golf in summer – I am also a recent convert to Skiing which I have fallen in love with even if that love is not reciprocated (I am pretty bad at it!)
  • This GSE is an incredibly exciting opportunity for me and fits nicely into what has been some recent years of change for me I am getting married to my lovely fiancee in June (somehow I convinced her this trip wasnt too near the wedding date) We recently bought a house in a place called Hersham in Surrey – Hersham has a village feel but is still close enough to London for Lou to travel to work I have recently got a new job at Surrey – same type of work but much more responsibility My parents have abandoned me and have moved to Ethiopia to live for 2 years My baby face often deceives but some of you will no doubt be shocked I turn 30 this year – lets just say I don’t like getting older!! And nor does my brother who is 33 – so we agreed to set ourselves a number of challenges – I am going to train to run a marathon and he is going to swim the English Channel (I came off best I think!).
