Mortenthorpe 2010-2011 Mortenthorpe 2010-2011 Presentation Transcript

  • Morten S. Thorpe || Web-developer, CMS, PHP, MySQL, HTML, Javascript || mortenthorpe@gmail.com MORTEN THORPE Competences - solutions - future 2010 - 2011
  • Morten S. Thorpe || Web-developer, CMS, PHP, MySQL, HTML, Javascript || mortenthorpe@gmail.com TECH. COMPETENCES My focus is web-technologies, and my interest is creating quality solutions using web-technologies - currently the ones listed below: • Technologies ‣ PHP/MySQL (8 years+) ‣ Symfony PHP (3 years+) ‣ HTML/CSS/JavaScript/AJAX (10 years +) ‣ Apache, FreeBSD (as server), shared hosting setup (3 yrs. +) ‣ Joomla CMS (2 years, and now deprecated) ‣ Drupal CMF/CMS vers. 6.x (currently using/learning)
  • Morten S. Thorpe || Web-developer, CMS, PHP, MySQL, HTML, Javascript || mortenthorpe@gmail.com OTHER COMPETENCES • Well versed in Mac OS X, a regular terminal-user • Knowledgeable about common designer-tools, such as Photoshop, Illustrator etc. • Speak and write fluently in Danish as well as in English • Network of friends and colleagues, who can and do provide assistance and new knowledge
  • Morten S. Thorpe || Web-developer, CMS, PHP, MySQL, HTML, Javascript || mortenthorpe@gmail.com SOLUTIONS - 5 FEAT. CLIENTS • Drupal CMF/CMS ‣ www.kunst-paa-arbejdspladsen.dk • Symfony PHP ‣ www.bjoernnoergaard.dk ‣ www.ui2610.dk • CubeCart - webshop ‣ www.designovation.dk ‣ www.wilferts.dk
  • Morten S. Thorpe || Web-developer, CMS, PHP, MySQL, HTML, Javascript || mortenthorpe@gmail.com FUTURE • Expand customer-base, as well as the nature of these customers. We currently service artists and galleries, and have already taken steps to make in-roads in areas such as information about healthcare. • Steadily optimize work-flows and also incorporate new and upcoming web-technologies into toolset. • Focus on delivering solutions based on Drupal CMF, our own Symfony PHP based CMS, and finally on build-to-order solutions in Symfony PHP. • Expand capacity of our company to better serve customers, both in the capabilities of our solutions, as well as optimizing the timelines.
  • Morten S. Thorpe || Web-developer, CMS, PHP, MySQL, HTML, Javascript || mortenthorpe@gmail.com OBSERVATIONS (CMS) • CMS: ‣ Joomla CMS is a fine web CMS as measured by the standards of yester-year. Too many things that we expect as features and functions today are too hard to accomplish or not available in Joomla CMS ‣ Drupal CMF/CMS A capable system which provides a solid foundation for modern websites, featuring SEO-friendly URLs , highly developed plugins (modules) and the flexibility to create many different data-structures for solutions. ‣ High-level differences between Joomla CMS and Drupal CMF/CMS: Joomla CMS is based on a “full base-installation” approach, where many technical decisions have been made for you at the outset. Drupal CMS/CMF takes the opposite approach; “Bare-bones base installation”, and the rest is strapped on by modules. Drupal has thus a higher degree of flexibility, but the “right” solution in Drupal is often dependent on choosing just the right modules - And there are many overlapping modules to be downloaded.
  • Morten S. Thorpe || Web-developer, CMS, PHP, MySQL, HTML, Javascript || mortenthorpe@gmail.com OBSERVATIONS • Choosing between creating a solution in a CMS system or custom code: ‣ Expected lifetime of the web-solution - The longer the lifetime, the better off you are with a CMS solution - Further development is also made easier, as well as regular feature- and security- updates made to the CMS ‣ Interest & capabilities of the web-solution administrator(s) - The higher the interest and capabilities are, the better off they will be with a custom built solution ‣ Raw performance - Custom code will always outperform CMS code. Time-to-creation is also a performance benchmark, and this is by far lower for the most common web-solutions in a CMS ‣ Budget - Let’s face it, and be honest - Budgetting is a large factor in choosing between a CMS solution and a custom one. ‣ Feature introduction vs. feature removal - CMS solutions will always be a compromise between introducing certain features and removing others that are standard. Custom-code is mainly a matter of feature-introduction
  • Morten S. Thorpe || Web-developer, CMS, PHP, MySQL, HTML, Javascript || mortenthorpe@gmail.com OBSERVATIONS (NON-TECHNICAL) • Solutions that replace or augment current tools for the intended user(s), should most often be made to accommodate the user(s) habits. Workflows and approaches that work against these habits will mostly be perceived as error-prone and reflect poorly on YOU as the developer. • When choosing to include “neat features” at the developers’ own initiative, then consider to leave them OUT by default, and make it possible in code to introduce these later on. • Communication between competences - Communicating across competences (customers, users, developers, project managers) is by far THE source of errors and greater creation-time, and not so much the technical hoops and tricks.
