How do you CyberBully? <ul><li>Through the use of: </li></ul><ul><li>e-mail </li></ul><ul><li>cell phone </li></ul><ul><li>pager messages </li></ul><ul><li>instant messaging </li></ul><ul><li>defamatory personal web sites </li></ul><ul><li>defamatory online personal polling websites </li></ul>

The Facts <ul><li>Nearly 35% of kids have been threatened online and almost one in five have had it happen more than once. </li></ul><ul><li>Nine out of ten middle school students have had their feelings hurt online. </li></ul><ul><li>About 75% have visited a Web site bashing another student. </li></ul><ul><li>Four out of ten middle school students have had their password(s) stolen and changed by a bully who then locked them out of their own account or sent communications posing as them. </li></ul><ul><li>About 21% of kids have received mean or threatening e-mails. </li></ul><ul><li>Girls are about twice as likely as boys to be victims and perpetrators of cyber-bullying. </li></ul><ul><li>About 58% of kids admit someone has said mean or hurtful things to them online. Cyberbullying By Proxy <ul><li>Cyber bullying by proxy is when a bully </li></ul><ul><li>gets someone else to bully another person. </li></ul><ul><li>However, the party that is doing the work is </li></ul><ul><li>unaware of the role they are playing and are </li></ul><ul><li>often unwitting accomplices. </li></ul>

Example of Cyber Bullying By Proxy <ul><li>Cyber Bully alerts website that they are being abused by victim (false claim) </li></ul><ul><li>Cyber Bully taunts victim in a chat room by using malicious language to bait the victim </li></ul><ul><li>Victim loses account privileges because violated website contract </li></ul>

Tips <ul><li>Never send a message to others when you are angry </li></ul><ul><li>Never open a message from someone you don’t know </li></ul><ul><li>If it doesn’t look or “feel right”, it probably isn’t </li></ul><ul><li>You don’t have to be “Always on”, Turn off, disconnect, unplug </li></ul>
