  1. 1. Book Review DayWhich book should you pick?? September 26, 2012
  2. 2. THE ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS by Scott O’Dell A story of survival, based upon the true story of a girl who was left upon an island near the coast of Southern California. She lived there for 18 years, alone. While she waited for rescue, she kept herself alive by building shelter, finding food, and fighting her enemies--the wild dogs.
  3. 3. HATCHET by Gary Paulson  Thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson is on his way to visit his father when the single-engine plane in which he is flying crashes. Suddenly, Brian finds himself alone in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but a tattered Windbreaker and the hatchet his mother gave him as a present -- and the dreadful secret that has been tearing him apart since his parents divorce. But now Brian has no time for anger, self pity, or despair -- it will take all his know-how and determination, and more courage than he knew he possessed, to survive.
  4. 4. THE CAY by Theodore Taylor  Phillip is excited when the Germans invade the small island of Curaçao. War has always been a game to him, and he’s eager to glimpse it firsthand–until the freighter he and his mother are traveling to the United States on is torpedoed. When Phillip comes to, he is on a small raft in the middle of the sea. Besides a cat, his only companion is an old West Indian, Timothy. The story follows the three as they must learn to survive on the barren island in the Caribbean Sea.
  5. 5. JULIE OF THE WOLVES by Jean Craighead George To her small Eskimo village, she is known as Miyax; to her friend in San Francisco, she is Julie. When the village is no longer safe for her, Miyax runs away. But she soon finds herself lost in the Alaskan wilderness, without food, without even a compass to guide her. Slowly she is accepted by a pack of Arctic wolves, Mid she grows to love them as though they were family. With their help, and drawing on her fathers teachings, Miyax struggles day by clay to survive. But the time comes when she must leave the wilderness and choose between the old ways an(] the new. Which will she choose? For she is Miyax of the Eskimos-- but Julie of the Wolves.
  6. 6. THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY by Sheila Burnford Instinct told them that the way home lay to the west. And so the doughty young Labrador retriever, the roguish bull terrier and the indomitable Siamese set out through the Canadian wilderness. Separately, they would soon have died. But, together, the three house pets faced starvation, exposure, and wild forest animals to make their way home to the family they love. is one of the great childrens stories of all time--and has been popular ever since its debut in 1961.
  7. 7. CALL OF THE WILD by Jack London  A classic novel of adventure, drawn from Londons own experiences as a Klondike adventurer, relating the story of a heroic dog, who, caught in the brutal life of the Alaska Gold Rush, ultimately faces a choice between living in mans world and returning to nature.
  8. 8. WHITE FANG by Jack London Born in the wilds of the freezing Yukon, the wolf-cub White Fang soon learns the harsh laws of nature, growing fiercer and more independent in his struggle to survive. Yet buried deep inside him are distant memories of affection and love - can he learn to trust man again?
